I'm very torn about this. I thought the position coaching by itself was solid. He oversaw Love's ascendance and helped Troy Pride go from a track guy to a better CB than he got credit for around here.

Recruiting for the position has been rough. I'm not sure how much of that falls in Lyght's lap but I suspect that's what this move is all about.
Same could be said about Denson's tenure here - good on-field results, terrible recruiting. Hopefully the next DB hire will be Taylor-esque.

Lyght is a no nonsense matter of fact kind of guy. He isn't a used car salesman and that probably hurt him on the recruiting trail. One of the best DB's to put on the gold helmet. Good luck to him.

It isn't about being a used car salesman, which has a negative connotation. It's about making connections, investing a lot of time and effort to nurture the connections, and building trust. How many times have commits said things like "it was big to hear from him every week" or similar sentiments. It's really just a grind, and good recruiters are ok with that.

Lyght gone but Quinn remains? Pays to be a BK crony.

I would put a lot of Quinn's issues squarely at feet of Denson.

ND's running backs were painfully slow compared the backs I watched in semi's and the Jan 1st bowl games.

I love the message, if you want to coach at ND you better be a great recruiter. Which is why I am not thrilled about the prospect of HH returning

Driskell is reporting that Lyght was not fired. His family moved out to California months ago and he’s joining them. I have no idea if true but that’s the reasoning being reported.

Miss St's Terrell Buckley has a kid at ND. Throw that name out there.

And of course my favorite recruiter in the world is out there and $600k buys him...

(And he had the Ducks CB's rollin' this year, #1 in P5 INT's)

If you want CB's like Ceyair Wright, Noah Avinger, Zakhari Wright & Jaylin Davies, pay this guy:

I’ve been hoping for Donte Williams for years. Problem is he’s making $400K this season and likely will go up to I believe $450K next season. I have a feeling if ND offers $600K or something like that then Oregon could just match it. He’s a valuable commodity there and I don’t see Oregon letting him leave. He’s probably the best recruiting CB coach in America other than maybe Corey Raymond at LSU.

And the Ducks led all P5's in INT's this year. He's producing 12 mo's a year now.

HH did exceptionally well recruiting his position and most of those guys raved about him. Let me know when Jeff Quinn brings the Joe Moore award back to ND.

I think this another move that BK is making to get Notre Dame over the hump. Last year he let Denson go and this year it is Lyght. They are both good coaches, but both were very below average recruiters. Look at what Taylor is doing on the recruiting trail, he already has one five star signed in 2020 and another one 2021 is close. A DB coach that is a good recruiter can do the same thing.

This move was less about BK and more about Lyght.

A poster asked, saying he personally knows Buckley would be interested (and does have daughter at ND).

But ISD staff knows nothing of ND being interested in T Buckley.

The guy is as far from "rando" as you can be. He's had over 1.5M followers for his ND material over the past decade. He's a longtime sports industry professional.

They know. They just aren't in a position to report anything yet. He shared an interview he did with TB when his daughter first started at ND and how he kept in touch with him, how could they not have asked him about the possibility? I probably read 10% of the material on that site but when I see his stuff, I read it because he shares a lot of unique & interesting info regarding all things ND that he doesn't share on his own site.

Also... maybe more things to be excited about here. In the absence of Donte Williams' name being thrown around, the second best name in recruiting is now surfacing. Demetrice Martin at Zona. Coach Meat's name is the most attached name in SoCal recruiting over the past decade. Would be a huge addition as far as recruiting, both in CA and now AZ where the talent level is exploding like nowhere else in the country.

Is there any info on how this began or is it still at the full rumor stage?

I don't think it's necessarily "full rumor" stage... some of the beat guys (and a couple of our plugged-in guys here) have maintained since October that ND has eyes on some established names to add to the staff, particularly at DB. So there's obviously something to it. It's just a matter of WHICH non-ND-connected/big-name guy it will be.

Established guys probably means raising the pay scale for some of them, which is good.

I'd be pretty surprised if Cooks came back. I guess you can't always believe what you read in the recruiting space but it sounds like he bad mouthed ND every chance he got when he was at Oklahoma.

Can't think of a scenario where BK would welcome someone back who left for lateral move.
