I'm not buying this at all. I think Light is a serious liability in his coaching style. I get that BVG may have a tight grip on how he wants his D ran, but the team still breaks up for position work EVERYDAY! That is your time to make an impact & Light ain't gettin' it done.

But what if Lyght is coaching technique per BVG's instructions? It's hard to do your jhob when your boss is looking over your shoulder constantly and has tight hold on the reins.

And Gilmore and BVG came to the point of blows how many times? Once on camera.

I am glad someone mentioned Gilmore, because he has produced NFL quality talent wherever he has gone. We experienced that playing UNC once, just before we hired him.

And remember, sometimes morale becomes so bad that folks, especially young folks, stop doing the things they can, not because they can no longer do them, but because they don't want to any longer.

Go back and watch some of the interviews and video of player doing impressions of BVG. I bet you see them in a new light!

Really makes you wonder why the players stated in interview that is was their fault and claimed BVG was a great coach, etc. Just a favor to BK to show team cohesiveness?

Not sure how long this will take to recover. Clearly this season will be a band aid, vanilla defense just trying to get through the year. Sad for the seniors to have their year hijacked by piss poor, overpaid coaches.

Gotta assume Gilmore is pretty relieved to be apart from BVG. Working for a crap boss really makes the job miserable. Probably just gave new life to his desire to be at ND with BVG getting canned.

Just really hoping that BK doesnt do the hire from within for the 2017 DC. My guess is Jack gave him the either him or you talk and BK was forced to punt on BVG. I truly do not think it was his desire to do so nor would have unless forced into a corner. Which is pretty damn sad and outright pathetic.

Regarding why the players won't throw BVG under the bus:

1) They are good kids
2) He is a good man, even if his coaching style is antiquated
3) His son is a teammate and a great kid

We can all get on our high horses behind a keyboard, but its different dealing with real people.

However, I completely agree on BVG just being stubborn. Even I could see the issues with, first and foremost, no d-line rotation... training to play press man, then never pressing... Dropping the 270 DE's into pass coverage so often... Dropping 8 into soft zones and rushing 3 on crucial downs when we needed to get to the QB... Rushing Schmidt more than Jaylon or Morgan... playing 3 down linemen against Texas's bulldozer package within the 20... leaving the middle of the field uncovered time and time and time again on run plays.

It was like we were watching Tin Cup.

The biggest evidence that Lyght isn't getting it done is that Cole Luke has regressed. What I'm not sure about is if that has more to do with scheme/assignment, confidence (a la Gary Gray who just imploded as a senior), or coaching the past two seasons.

Could he be more out of shape this year? He seems a step slower and looks a little heavier. Does this fall more on Lyght, Longo or Cole himself?

I don't believe the problems are with the assistants at least not Gilmore, he has quite a bit of success with guys at North Carolina and Illinois with far less talent. I think a lot of the problem was BVG micromanaging things, playing the players he wanted and not neccesarily who gilmore wanted.

Is Booker that good of a recruiter? I know he has a tough territory but I was under the impression that he hasn't been that successful. Am I wrong?

I think Booker is the next coach that needs to go. The TE position has become pretty useless since he took over and the Special Teams aren't that great either.

I dont think he is that great of a recruiter at all... I just think he was hired because he was viewed as someone who WOULD be a good recruiter.

The TE's have been horrible under Booker. Guys like Koyack, Smyth and Weisher are talented but they have been absolute liabilities on the field. I definitely agree that Booker has got to go.

I do agree with Koon now that it is time for him to go as well.

Straight talk he recruited more quality DBs in his first year on the staff than were signed in three classes before him combined.

Excerpt from article from one year ago.

Lesson learned. Excellent job by Lyght.

https://www.ndinsider.com/recruiting/what-todd-lyght-learned-from-notre-dame-s-nonexistent-cornerback/article_193f2be8-ed6d-11e6-8a67-0b179d9e6dd3.html

But … how? For Lyght, who just wrapped up his second recruiting cycle at Notre Dame, the most important adjustment is to develop more of a contingency plan in case Irish commits don’t ultimately wind up on campus.

“Moving forward, I know that, for me, it was a great experience, because I’ll do a much better job of making sure that we have plenty more guys on deck and ready to go,” said Lyght, a former Irish All-America cornerback. “I think that, my first year here, we pretty much got 90 percent of the guys that we wanted.

"This year it didn’t work out that way, but next year it will. So you just have to take it in stride, learn from it and improve.”

On their podcast they did say something about him. It was in response to a question about expected staff changes during the offseason. They didn't say much. It was something like "Todd Lyght, his family is in California, so yeah..."

I have heard and read he is kind of the weak link on the recruiting front, so it might be they are trying to find a landing spot for him?

If Lyght is replaced, it will be interesting to see who his replacement is. Terry Joseph could probably handle the entire defensive backfield, which gives BK alot of flexibility.

Agree some what, but with the way this defensive system is run I would think they would bring in another CB coach. The safeties have so much responsibility in Lea system that they should have a separate coach to work exclusively with them.

As expected - Driskell reporting that Lyght will not be back next season.

I'm very torn about this. I thought the position coaching by itself was solid. He oversaw Love's ascendance and helped Troy Pride go from a track guy to a better CB than he got credit for around here.

Recruiting for the position has been rough. I'm not sure how much of that falls in Lyght's lap but I suspect that's what this move is all about.

Lyght gone but Quinn remains? Pays to be a BK crony.

terrible take imo....quinn is recruiting at a high level and was handicapped by what long wanted.....Lyght has struggled mightily on the recruiting end and db's have been avg( supposedly leaving for family and personal reasons)...other than Love what DB has been good?? pride has been avg

i get he hung onto BVG and Longo in years past, but he is making the necessary changes for us to take the next step up......wonder if we look at Jeff Burris?

Good to know you do not like my take. Quinn sucks and is a crony hire.

La Tech was tied for 5th in Interceptions in DI with Bama and LSU.

Burris appears to be doing a good job at La Tech.

Maybe BK can hire him plus Bob McFarland for Cali Domer? McFarland was Joe Moore's OL GA back in the 80's or 90's.

I feel like recruiting background is going to be a huge box to check this time around.
