First time in history the winner of the Kentucky Derby was disqualified. I don't know that much about the rules, but it looked obvious Maximum Security came out of his lane and blocked War of Will.

Reported that the owner of Maximum Security will file an appeal. Of course Trump had to put in his two cents worth saying it was a terrible ruling.

On today's date 133 years ago.

On 8 May 1886, Dr John S Pemberton nailed the formula, but it was his bookkeeper who came up with the name "Coca-Cola®". Frank M Robinson, suggested that “the two Cs would look well in advertising”. And with that, Robinson also designed the now world famous Coca-Cola script logo.

Went to the Indy 500 parade Saturday. Hadn't been in years because of the traffic. Our sons apartment is on the second floor overlooking the parade route. We took a couple of the grandkids down Friday night and spent the night. Great view and no hassle if you needed to use the bathroom. Only problem was it was a little too windy for the big balloons. Amazing how all of these racers end up with hot wives. lol

This is pretty sad. Semi driver reaches for his tea and plows into the back of a car killing a young mother and her little twins and causing seven cars to be involved.

What makes it worse, per the police:
It was a constructions zone. Driver said he was going 35. Police pulled data from his truck that showed he was going 65.
Said he hit his brakes right before he hit the car. Data shows he didn't hit his brakes until after hitting the car.
Here's the big kicker.....Never showed any remorse both times the police informed him of the fatalities.
Asked what motel the police were going to put him in for the night.
When informed of the fatalities he asked about getting his belongings out of his truck.
Never asked a question about the victims.

Police put him in the iron bar motel.

It's true. It was in the report and reported on several TV stations.

I didn't read the story or anything and am only going off what you shared but my mind can only wrap around that with, "He was in such shock or denial he couldn't deal with and or process it..." but maybe it's because I (like most of us) am not a monster, who knows...??

Continuing on this subject. Watching the news last night the show a clip where he's being escorted in handcuffs to the courts along with other prisoners. Reporters are there trying to get him to say something. Another prisoner leans over and tells him to apologize to the family, so he says "I'm sorry".

Later he tells a reporter he "Doesn't know what the big deal is!"

He's a sack of sh!t.

John Dillinger is being exhumed. Apparently the History channel is working on a project amid rumors over the years that it's someone else buried in his grave. Given how famous he was, it's highly unlikely it's someone else IMO.

His nephew approved the exhumation. I'm guessing the History Channel convinced him with a few dollars.

Gangster John Dillinger's body reportedly to be exhumed from heavily protected grave

LWm6AGj.jpg

The remains of notorious 1930s gangster John Dillinger – reportedly entombed beneath 5,000 pounds of concrete at an Indianapolis cemetery – are set to be exhumed decades after the infamous killer was gunned down by FBI agents.

The Indiana State Department of Health approved a permit July 3 that was sought by Dillinger’s nephew, Michael C. Thompson, and will result in the body being exhumed from Crown Hill Cemetery and then reinterred there, The Associated Press reported.

Why? Details are scarce, but a History Channel spokesperson told the Indianapolis Star it was for an "upcoming project," without elaborating.

Health Department spokeswoman Jeni O’Malley says the agency expected Dillinger’s remains to be exhumed and reinterred Sept. 16, based on the permit. The Crown Hill Cemetery said it had no information regarding the plans.

The FBI said Dillinger’s gang killed 10 people during bank robberies and other crimes in the 1930s – and at one point, according to Fox 59, he was charged in the murder of an Indiana police officer but was never convicted.

FBI agents killed Dillinger in July 1934 outside Chicago's Biograph Theater, where he had just seen the Clark Gable movie "Manhattan Melodrama."

When Dillinger’s body was brought back to his birthplace of Mooresville, Ind., a crowd of nearly 10,000 gathered to catch a glimpse, the Indianapolis Star reported.

The gangster, who lived to be 31, was the subject of the 2009 film “Public Enemies,” in which he was portrayed by actor Johnny Depp.

Dillinger’s family reportedly ordered two and a half tons of concrete to be placed over his grave after reports emerged that attempts might be made to steal his corpse, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Apparently my mom and dad are getting an exchange student from Poland next week. I only found out yesterday. I'm interested to see how that goes.

At least they'll know how to manage the cold as opposed to one from Thailand where 70 is cold. Usually one gets more from them and will remain their second Mom and Dad for life.

They'll run an hour program on it, after every commercial break they'll recap the previous 12 minutes for 8 minutes, give 4 minutes more, commercial, rinse and repeat...

You're right, it's sad they had to fall to the poison of sensationalized programming and reality.

I loved the, In Search of History, History's Mysteries, History Undercover lineup... it was such a good jumping off point for historical topics that one may not have had much previous knowledge of. I have a pretty decent library of books that were inspired by those programs.... days gone by.

How do you dispose of a beached whale carcass? Who ya goin' call?

NOAA Is Investigating 70 Gray Whale Deaths Along the West Coast
The whales seem to have died from starvation and washed up on shore from California to Alaska

So far this year, 70 gray whales have washed up on beaches along the west coast from California to Alaska, enough that last Friday the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration declared an “unusual mortality event” and launched an investigation into why the whales are dying.

Reuters reports that thus far 37 dead whales have been found in California, three in Oregon, 25 in Washington, five in Alaska and an additional five along the coast of British Columbia....
It’s likely that the 70 whales are are just a fraction of the whales that have died on the migratory journey so far this spring, since most whales actually sink to the ocean floor when they die.

So far, researchers have two main theories as to why the animals are starving. One is that the North Pacific gray whale population has essentially reached the carrying capacity of its environment, or the level that food resources can sustain. It’s possible there were too many whales and too few amphipods for the entire population to get its share during last summer’s feeding frenzy.
Four ways:
- Tow the carcass back out to sea. Those often end up on the beaches farther south.
- Compost them. Sometimes private owners volunteer their land and endur the smell and the time it takes for a 40 ton whale"s flesh, fat and organs to break down.
- Put it in a landfill. San Diego has a process where they tow it to Fiesta Island, their designated whale-removal spot. workers at Parks and Recreation will load it into a truck. In the case of the recent gray whale. workers used four front loaders to lift the enormous carcass into a truck. The driver takes it to our landfill, where landfill employees carve it up and bury it. They cover the body parts with other junk, and eventually, the animal will composts with just the bones left.
- Explode it. Oregon tried that in 1970 and the video became one of the most-watched Internet videos in history. Today, Oregon's policy for dealing with dead beached whales is to bury them in the sand.
There Is Now Better Footage of That Time Oregon Blew Up a Whale With Dynamite (Video)

Many of the whales that have died and landed on Pacific coasts are grey whales. The Gray Whale is the seventh largest whale in the species, being around 44-48 ft in length and weighing about 60,000 pounds. The Gray Whales are very populous, with over 26,000 in existence.

A small town in Newfoundland recently needed to figure out how to dispose of a blue whale carcass. Blue Whale is the largest mammal in existence. As an adult, they weigh up to 300,000 pounds. They can be up to 100 ft long.Blue Whales, on the other hand, are an extremely endangered species with only 2,800 believed to be left. Sadly, this is why they are one of the rarest whales you can encounter.

Besides the stench, the problem is that whale carcasses may explode from a buildup of methane and other gases accumulate in the body of the whale during decomposition that may swell the body to twice its normal size. The skin becomes thin and a person getting too close can fall into it. See the article below for those hazards and videos.

A Brief History of Exploding Whales
It happens! Pretty often, actually. And the results are ... really, really gross.

Working in Higher Ed. can be a trip some times... Earlier I was sitting in a meeting with a host of Deans and Chairs and they were all suited up. All have basically only existed in academia. They shared stories of elite fraternities, how their father's were also chair of the dept. before them,... or how their next summit will be in Norway this year... and I'm sitting here in jeans, sneakers and a Hawaiian shirt like, " Well I briefly dated a Scandinavian chick in college, my made up fraternity was called "Delta Phi Pimp" and if you ever need new carpet installed I can totally get that done for you."

At times it feels like:

https://wsbt.com/news/local/researc...cover-how-breast-cancer-is-spreading-in-bones

Researchers from Notre Dame discover how breast cancer is spreading in bones

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Researchers from Notre Dame have discovered how breast cancer is spreading in bones.

This discovery is a critical step in learning how to stop the cancer from spreading and treat patients. Right now, when cancer spreads to the bone it's considered incurable, which is why this discovery has real potential to help patients.

Laurie Littlepage is the Campbell Family Assistant Professor of Cancer Research at Notre Dame. She and her graduate student, Ricardo Romero-Moreno, have authored a study on their findings.

Their team was able to discover what breast cancer does when it spreads to the bone. They identified a pair of proteins believed to be critical in that process.

They were able to identify factors that could either activate those proteins to develop into cancer or inhibit cancer growth.

Their discoveries could help treat patients with breast cancer that has spread to the bone.

“Basic research is really important in discovering what we need to tackle to help patients," said Littlepage. "Sometimes...we don't, as basic scientists, see them translate into patients, but in this case we are working at the steps really close to where we would use them in cancer patients."

The Kelly Cares Foundation was instrumental in funding this research.

Right now, they are applying for funding for the next phase of research which will be helping to design pre-clinical studies. The goal there is to develop a strategy to do clinical trials in patients.
