How do you guys feel about this year's class? I feel that it could have been better, but it is better than some of Ty's classes. How do you guys feel?

it's better than ALL of Ty's classes...but it is very LIGHT on Defensive recruits.

The 18 guys Weis got are generally awesome players. I wish there were 2 more DEs, but that's life.

Who cares if its better than any of Ty's classes? Is Ty the Bench mark of good when it comes to recruiting?
I don't think so

i think they were just making a point that since they are better than ty's classes, the program overall is moving in a positive direction

i think ND did the best it could. Remember, against good teams especially, our defense played very poor! Give CW and CB some credit, who could have done better given our play last year. Onward and upward!

How do I feel about it?

Well, I live in reality... only four/five teams in the country had obviously better classes...

I Feel Great About This Year's Class...

I have to say I am excited about this year's class...obviously it could be better than it was especially on defense, but remember, with coaching changes on D especially to someone who hasn't been a DC before, the elite recruits were understandably twitchy (even more so since most of the time it was rumblings of change but no official word)

But this class is the best we had in a while and we have a few extra to give away at a later date...once kids see things improving even more we will be an elite recruiting staple!

Make no mistake about it, CB is going to be a great recruiter for us. I can't wait to see the D recruits we get next year. it will be like night and day, I really believe that.

CB was just the perfect man for the job, in every way. The only thing more perfect would have been if CB had a mind-control device implanted in his brain, so he could see the other team's OC's thought process when he was playing calls.

And I heard he might actually have that...

Based on average stars ND had the 5th best class in the country, according to Rivals. We had a haul at LB with one of them being an absolute stud (Kerry Neal), we added playmakers to the secondary, and got some elite weapons on offense. The only problem with this class is the lack of DE's. Signing Trattou wouldn't have helped the DE situation because he would have played OLB/rush end. I would have liked more players but the numbers will be similar next year with 20.

Don't let what this class could have been detract from what this class is. We lossed some guys, move on. This is a talented class and the second top ten class in two years. If any of you are doubting the recruits go to und.com and watch the videos they have. It makes me giddy. Golden Tate's video is awesome.

2007 recruiting

2007 recruiting

Charlie is serious when he says he is pleased. He is on schedule and remember there are probably 40 guys in the top 150 that would be academically eligible. We don't offer anything illegal and we expect them to graduate.
Look at the graduation rate of anyone else in the top 10. We are ND.
PS stay tuned for information to be in the NY Times!

Right on point LMI. This class is better than ANY of Ty's classes, although a little thin on the defensive side of the ball. Hopefully CB with a full year in house will be able to get some big time defensive recruits.

All I have to say is that for the sitauation that Weis was in with the firing of Minter, he brought in one hell of a class. The firing of Minter, in my opinion, was a huge factor in the recruiting of Donald, Martin and Trattou. Minter's firing was announced early in December and right around there was when these recruits began to lose interest so next year, especially with, in my opinion, a better recruiter than Minter in Brown, we should have a very solid defensive class. Also, most importantly of all, we seemed to have brought in guys with great character and all seem like great people that bleed blue and gold. I would much rather have a Harrison Smith than a Greg Little any day of the week.

Actually, the 6th spot.

USC = 4.22
UF = 3.89
LSU = 3.88
tOSU = 3.80
TX = 3.79
ND = 3.72

(tOSU was easy to miss since they were a few spots lower than us)

It would have been higher but we recruited Brandon Walker...he's a 2 star. The highest kickers were 3-star (UF and LSU both took one). If you remove Brandon we might move up two spots to #4 with a 3.82 ranking.

If Walker were a 3-star we would be at 3.78...still in the #6 spot.

However, this does NOT negate your point that we got LOTS of high quality talent.

Some signing day observations from the prairie...

One of the things I've really loved about the Coach Charlie Era is the pressers. Not only are they a coherent "180" from the previous 2 head coaches, but they are also informative to the point of being educational. If I can ever swing it, I'm going to the ND Coaches Clinic, because the lessons this guy teaches in a press conference are the tip of the iceberg of knowledge one could gain at a clinic.

So, what did we learn?

1. The incoming signees have a boatload of potential and were recruited to fit the system, not to fill out a class! Wasn't it pure fun to hear excitement in the Coach's voice? This is confirmed by the overall average rating of this class in the top 10 by the various sources (IN SPITE OF the last minute flip-flops).

2. ND is going to run a "Patriots" defense now. Coach Weis broke down the 3-4 defense in myth and reality like Adam Smith explaining basic capitalism. The 2 methodologies are to run the 3-4 as a "system defense" or as a "multiple look" defense. For the former, study NFLFilms of the late 70s and 80s. For the latter, look at what the Patriots do to adapt to each opponent. The "system" method can be very effective IF a constant flow of the exact talent necessary can be guaranteed. The latter can look like a 3-4, 4-3, 5-2, 3-3-5, or 3-5-3 on successive downs with little or no substitution. It puts more emphasis on athleticism and film study than a specific size or skill set. This, gentlemen, is very good!

3. "Charlie is PISSED"...This is a good thing. Early signing would clear up a lot of this recruiting crapola, Coach is spot on there. His tone when talking about "commitment" makes me worry less about the future of ND FB than anything said in an ND presser from 1997-2004.

Offensive we are loaded, a power back in Hughes, Allen for speen, very good receiver in Kamara, good line man and the best qb available in years. Throw in Ragone for a TE an the offense is tremendous. Defense...well......

this isn't a Elite Class, but it is a Very Talented class! I think the biggest recruit of the season was Corwin Brown, and that Charlie and Co. learned alot about recruiting defections and will be better in the future preventing such defections.

Offensively..........very good. I for one would like to know how they are going to split up the schollies between offense & defense. Will/or was...... CB be able to go to Charlie & say " I need 15 schollies for defense next year", ( just for example), or will Charlie not want to give up that many from his offense for fear of not keeping it stockpiled?

Not elite? Okay, it's not Florida or USC. However, how many Div I teams are there? 119? This class is ranked 7-8 by most. In the top, what, 95%? That's pretty damn close to elite.

I can't see us having 10 seniors petitioning next year like we are now. I think next year could be an opportunity to grab 25 (if we can) instead of the stated 20.

The only problem with this class is the lack of DE's. Signing Trattou wouldn't have helped the DE situation because he would have played OLB/rush end..

But with 34 personnel, I expect one of, if not both Nuss and Nwankwo to probably be DE's. Neither one strikes me as the huge NT type of player, which means they'll be playing DE. Ian Williams I see as a NT. I don't think there's a single real hole in this class that we didn't address in some way. I'm pretty dang glad it was this good. We'd all love to be number one each year in recruiting, and also win every game and the NC each year while we are at it, but I think there's really very little to complain about this class.

Honestly, if you hadn't followed recruiting at all, and just looked at the end at who signed, how would you feel? I think that's a better barometer than the jilted girlfriend attitude after the decommits.

I would be slightly disappointed at the size of the class and how few D players we got. But overall it is one of the best classes in the last 15 years.

we don't need to have 10 5th years next year to keep next year's class numbers around 20. weis inked 15 his first year, 28 his second year, and 18 his third year. that's 61 in all. 60 if yeatman's scholly is a lacrosse scholarship rather than a football scholarship.

consequently, if the irish take 20 next year, that already puts them at 80 scholarship players. toss in a 2-3 5th years and a couple walk-on turned scholarship athlete (assuming weis continues the practice of giving a scholarship to the occasional deserving walk-on), and you're already at the 85 scholarship limit.
