Freeman in his post game said he didn’t have a clue why nd was letting players run wide open and why they gave up so many big plays and couldn’t get any pressure. He needs to watch the video.

If you can’t see it in real time you’re not a great coach you’re an analyst. We have an analyst at dc and head coach that has no clue how to coach and call D. It’s a terrible combination. They can’t fix any issues.

The fact the D got worse between game 1 and 2 with a bye says all you need to know about freeman and ash.

Freeman is a ceo and needs elite coordinators to do the coaching and game plans. Without golden freeman is getting exposed like Florida state did to him in 2021. Kelly had to step in and change the D in 2021 because freeman thought it was a good idea to drop foskey into coverage every other passing play.

The offense could be better. Maybe Carr was tipping his pitches. Maybe the offense in general was with Love's runs.

But they scored 34 points (with one "lost" possession from the punt block TD). More than enough to get a win with a competent defense.

No, this loss is squarely on the defense. Frankly, I am calling for Ash's head for these two games after not having any real affinity for the hiring in the first place. But, a lot of this also lay squarely on Freeman. While I understand the idea behind the pivot of systems for the eventual championship advantage, the players we have are not NFL veterans that can just switch on a dime. We spent years recruiting and developing players for one system and in the space of one offseason we have completely abandoned that system. Maybe this change could work if we had a really good DC implementing it, but we obviously do not have that.

If I'm going to really try to look at the bright side the morning after, hopefully this means Mickens sticks around longer because he may well be DC by the end of the season.

My only pause with Freeman is I’m not sure how good he is at hiring.

Tommy left. He hires Gerry. It’s a tire fire. He gets Denbrock.

Al left. He hires Ash…

Marcus just panics and seems to revert back to hiring someone he knows. Which is fine if it’s someone you know who is an also a good and experienced coach.

Unfortunately all Marcus’s good buddies are shitty coordinators.

And we roasted Kelly for doing the same thing.

tough game, tough couple weeks

in other news USF didn't get called for a single penalty until roughing the passer with 5 minutes to go in the game.

that's now 3 games in a row where apparently offensive holding doesn't exist. I guess the refs are going for their record of 8 straight games back in 2018.

That's aight, 8 penalties 2 turnovers and we still won by 37

I’ll add one more thing the only offense during the regular season last year that was remotely close to Miami or A&M was USC and they put up 35 on us under Golden
That was due to gray and poor roster management. We have no choice but to play gray and probably Hobbs still due to even worse HC roster management and a worse DC. This will be a D that gives up a good amount of points every week.

Glad to see the ESPN headline that this was a "game-changing win" for A&M. Notre Disney stadium continues to provide special moments for (opposing) fans.

Tons of holding they didn’t call. Also, that call on TAMU’s kickoff TD was a bad call and we go down by 1 but WE get the ball last and probably slow play clock and instead and score last to win the game. That was just bad luck.
Yep, a coach would never do it, but we should have declined the penalty with this defense. Everyone knew how this one was ending.

According to PFF, Reed completed 17 passes. 8 of them were defended by Hobbs/Stroman/Zackery for 238 yards.

That is 66% of the yards coming against 3 players, 2 of which barely played.

*Sunday grades subject to change

Freeman should hold a press conference today announcing that Ash has been fired, and that he will be taking over the defense for the year!
At the very least he needs to do just start calling the plays even with no press conference to try and salvage something out of this season.

This program deserves that. The haters at ESPN are correct. We don’t have a good team, we aren’t special, we aren’t elite.

9 hours removed and all I've come up with is that they need to cancel night games. Until the product is worthy of the atmosphere stick to afternoon games. It's not worth staying up late and waking up feeling like a zombie.

Just absolutely awful. Only thing to hold out hope is they see 2 losses by a total of 4 points at the end of the year to two high level teams worth something. That's assuming the two losses don't turn out to be bad losses

Yes, our argument will be that we lose to the very best teams. I also get rejected by the hottest women. Etc. By the way, we'll see how good Miami and A&M actually are. I do not think either are world-beaters.

We could certainly get in at 10-2, but we're a hostage to fortune now; it is out of our hands.

Miami may well be the class of the ACC. I don’t think A&M will turn out to be all that good against teams that have a pass defense.

Last thing on Ash.

His claim to fame is the 2014 Ohio St team.

The talent on that team was unbelievable and even he's clone bvg would've been able to be productive with that group. MF needs to clean him out now and find a guy like Miami his

Upon reflection the funniest thing has to be Tyler Buchner having a chance to redeem himself and outright win the game with his arm. And he screws it up

My comment is less about Riley and more about Denbrock. I also like CJ Carr. 90% of my original post was about the defensive coordinatorthe remainder was about the offensive coordinator’s calls this year. It is not a QB comparison. Keep up.
Are you illiterate, or do you just struggle mentally. When I say, "We just put up 40 on a talented Elko defense with a QB roughly as experienced as you or me," that's a comment about Michael Frederick Denbrock. If you want to bitch about him, you picked the wrong week.

Sucks having to root for Miami and A&M to be legit and run the table.

Can someone tell me what the fuck we worked on during the bye week?
Trash talking.

Awful lot of that last night from a team that's now 0-2.

Don't get me wrong - I like playing with an attitude and don't mind the talk....if the results back it up.

When you don't/can't back it up it's a tough look.

So many what-if's after these 2 games. A&M prob feel the same, though with those missed passes to open receivers. 33 points by the offense was pretty good, but ND left a couple on the table, too.

I was really hoping that making Hinish a captain indicated he'd made some kind of turn for the better. He's a smart guy and knows where to go, but he's too small and too weak. He gets pushed back a lot and cannot bust open a lane by himself. It's like he plays a speed rush game from the middle of the line and that's going nowhere. He's not a P4 guy just because his brother was.

If Gray isn't injured, then wtf was that tackle attempt early in the game? He's always been hot and cold as far as coverage, but you have to give more effort than that in tackling.

This could be a 10-2 team at the end of the year, it could be a 7-5 team, and there's no way to tell right now.

It also could have been a 12-0 team and that is frustrating.

I don’t really have any good things to say about the defense. It’s all bad. Can you imagine what playing Navy is going to look like with our inability to tackle?

CJ Carr is going to be really, really good. I just hope we don’t #Clausen him by having him play with a horrible defense his entire career.

Yea, a “Co-DC” role 11 years ago. Freeman needs to own this one. It cost a good team a CFB Playoff spot

I was thinking the same thing after I went through the schedule again. The way USC plays, the way Arkansas has been playing and the way this defense plays 3 more losses is a very real possibility. I am actually expecting it.

This is obviously on Ash not putting players in a position to succeed, but I’m not convinced things are significantly better with Golden. Do they do enough to win yesterday, of course, but this defensive drop off was inevitable to a degree. I don’t blame Bowen, Shuler, or Hinish specifically, but you went from your captains being 6th year seniors to two true juniors and a guy who plays a position where the leadership matters less. Bowen and Shuler, I doubt they’re early entrants. Let them figure it out as the year goes on and it’s only going to help the team next year with a proper coach.
