Dan Wetzel makes a compelling argument for why a "Top 4" format is better than "Conference Champs" model here.

Now the Big 10 wants a selection committee to pick the teams who would participate in a four team playoff:

Although, they still prefer plus one to a playoff:

Big Ten prefers plus-1 to 4-team playoff | NevadaAppeal.com

If you're going to use a committee, then you might as well make it a minimum of 8 teams playing it off for the title. IMO, you open up conspiracy theories with having only four teams involved and a committe deciding who they should be.

Why not have a 64 team playoff. Better still, drop the regular season and have all teams in the playoffs. Then the top two teams can meet at the end of the season in a +1 game. Wait, that is what they do now except they call it the regular season. All they have to do is add the bowls to the mix to determine who plays in the +1 game.

IMO, plus one will not work. Scenarios can still arise where someone is left out.

A four team playoff using the best four teams is a step in the right direction but I really feel that a 12 team playoff using some type of ranking system to determine the participants, including byes and home playoff games to keep the regular season meaningful right down to the last game, would be the way to go.

An 8 team playoff is the best option for college football, but a 4 team playoff is a step in the right direction. Best four teams play 1 vs 4, 2 v 3.

Guys - relax, it will get there eventually. We just have to be patient. In less than 10 years we'll have an 8 or 12 team tournament. We have to start with 4 here to get the ball rolling.

Buzz:NBC working on new deal w/Notre Dame FB to be in line w/new big payouts of other conferences. Approx. $15+mm now, likely $20-24mm+ per

ND AD has talked about their own TV network, which Comcast/NBC may partner. More money means reasons to join a conf for FB not as needed.

ND/NBC deal is FB only. Projected new Big East $$ for non-fb members may be worth $3-5mm/yr. ND would be looking at least $25mm per yr.

ND football will get playoff access. W/new NBC deal likely, increased Big East $$, potential network, Irish will be among top paid programs

that is what I am talking about... If ND and NBC can settle a big contract, independence will stay as it is. Though I am a little surprised at the speculated numbers, that is a pretty big increase!

I wonder if they will be moving games to cable in the new agreement?

TV money will never be the deciding factor in ND joining a conference. ND is flush enough for cash from boosters/alumni that they will never make a move for cash alone.

The ONLY thing that will ever force ND to join a conference would be it gets to the point where there are 4-5 super conferences that decide to leave the NCAA and form their own division for football purposes...at that point I suspect ND would either be told to get "in or out" so to speak. Restricted access to the major college football postseason is the only thing I can ever see forcing ND into a conference. If that never happens, I think ND is an indy forever.

A team can't go undefeated in a playoff and not win a championship.

Oh yeah, I probably should have told you guys what Gene told me Friday night. Notre Dame has gotten an invitation to the Big 12. The conditions are:

-Notre Dame is to schedule six Big 12 games, and freely schedule what they want for the rest of the season.

-Notre Dame is allowed to keep their NBC contract. This makes sense, as Texas (the school who is practically begging ND to join) has their own network.

-Texas and to a lesser extent, Oklahoma, are the schools pitching the plan.

-Florida State will likely join, but there isn't a time frame for them.

How would this work with the 6 games? Would we be a "real" member for football? Or is this invite for all other sports?

I have no clue about all sports, because football is always the topic of conversation in our circle. As for the six games, it's an offering to ND to try to entice them to join the Big 12.

Who is Gene if I can ask? Don't expect a name just a idea of how he came by this info.

6 games is little too much in my opinion. If I were Swarbrick, I would negotiate that down to 3-4 games. 6 Games makes us eliminate games that I would like to keep.

So there has been some stuff going around the twittersphere that ND to Big 12 is for all sports but football is basically a done deal. One condition will be that we play 6 Big 12 teams a year. How does that work with our future schedules/contracts? Are we going to see the MSU, Michigan, and Purdue games disappear? I'd imagine the only game that will be safe will be the USC game.
