Already mentioned in Josh Moore's thread, but from more of a recruiting perspective:

Atlanta (Ga.) https://247sports.com/Article/USC-f...h-Moore-flips-Stanford-Clay-Helton-152662962/

Apparently switching sides of the ball from S to WR.

This drops the Tree to 12 commits, 71st overall, 11th in Pac12 in the composite for 2021.

Looking at their offer list for uncommitted prospects:

-3star WR Makai Cope's recruitment seems far from the finish line even though Biggins submitted a CB for him in May. Utah looks to be making a big push for him as well.
I put in a Crystal Ball forecast for Stanford with Cope awhile back but it sounds like he's open right now and isn't leaning anywhere. Cope has consistently mentioned Arizona State, USC, Michigan, Kansas State and Northwestern as schools he's interested in but the Sun Devils, Trojans and Wolverines look to be full at the receiver position.

-Drew Kendall, 4star Guard, has a top 3 of BC, Stanford, and Michigan.

-Aaron Armitage, 4star Dline, announced commit date of 11/3/20. All signs point to SC.

-They trail Cal and Washington for a DT, low 3star #644 overall.

-Their "most likely next" commit is a full back/d lineman, not nationally ranked, #93 SDE. He is also listed as considering Wash St and BC.

-Recent offer in August on the 813th overall player, an ILB from Georgia on the same day as Arkansas. He also holds offers from Pitt, South Carolina, Louisville, Kentucky, K State, and Colorado. He is without a published leader.

-It appears to be between Utah and ND right now for Kahanu Kia, out of a host of west coast options for the Hawaiian although Stanford offered one day after us.

-The recruitment of Ceyair Wright is anyone's guess even as SC has all the CBs at the moment. The future Space Jam 2 costar is on record about his desire to continue said acting career. Therefore Troy seems like a reasonable landing spot, but his recruitment appears open from the outside. ASU, Michigan, and Stanford are a few of the named hopeful alternatives.

-An August offer on the 113th athlete, unranked overall, from Utah, hasn't displaced BYU's lead.

Recapping the above would appear to conclude an expansion of their board as sound logic if they intend on taking close to 20. However, in the not so recent past, Shaw and company took in a class of 14 prospects in 2017 (upcoming starter Gabe Reid came back from a mission this year too). I find it hard to see them landing more than 2-3 of the above. With the NCAA allowing additional eligibility without further details, numbers will be difficulty to analyze.

Their remaining 2021 DBs are lower 3stars. The 32nd and 45th safety, 50th cornerback, and also another safety who isn't ranked in the top thousand overall. After parting ways with Ayden Hector this spring, their best DB commit since Adebo, due to an unfortunate incident, their DBs on the roster consist of two 4stars, eight ranked 3stars, three unranked overall 3stars, and two former walk-ons now on scholly for a rather shallow 2 deep.

Currently, 2021 is on pace to be the worst class since their 52nd ranked, 11th of 12 PAC teams in 2013. At least that year was book ended by 7th and 13th overall classes in 2012 and 2014 respectively. . Taking Hector and Scotty Edwards (going on LDS mission) off the 2020 group, drops them to 23 players and 22nd overall according to the class calculator. Their trend appears downward from their peak as the 2019 class was 19th and 2018 group was 40th overall.

And speaking of a thin 2 deep,

Stanford's OL has 12 scholarship players. 2 seniors, zero juniors, 5 sophomores, and 5 freshmen.

Even if everyone comes back, possible but certainly a 5th year in college wasn’t planned by Sarell considering he was the 5th overall player in the 2017 class and Stanford’s second highest rated commit (ever), that would put them at 13 players for next year with one OL in the current recruiting class.

Hard to go live in practice or go 1s vs 2s when you barely have 10 guys. If they get a touch of the injury bug again...could be worse than covid (too soon?).

Shaw possibly got complacent? He never struck me as a great recruiter or like he loves the grind. Did they lose other recruiters?

I think one of the things that's catching up with Stanford is what happened with Weiss at ND. They've done a good job of consistently getting talented kids, but they just seem to completely whiff at various positions. A 5 star OL blocking for a 5 star QB to throw to a 5 star TE isn't a whole team.

Yeah. Think we were 6-6 in ‘09 with the Young/Clausen/Rudolph trio.

So in the 2020 offseason Stanford's now lost

QB KJ Costello
QB Jack Richardson WO
RB Trevor Speights
WR Donald Stewart
TE Scooter Harrington
OL Devery Hamilton
OL Henry Hattis
OL Dylan Powell
DL Michael Williams
DL Jovann Swann
DL Bo Peek
DL Dylan Boles WO
LB Anthony Trinh WO
DB Obi Eboh
DB Stuart Head
ST Collin Riccitelli

That's absurd attrition. 16 dudes leaving is definitely worth a look into what the hell's going on with Stanford. Certainly a concern given how difficult it is to recruit freshmen into Stanford and maintain numbers and then also a concern given they can take 0 transfers in. I'm interested to see where this season goes for Stanford as they have virtually no depth at all on their roster.

Little and Adebo opted out, too. When Stanford was dominate, many of these fifth years would not have transferred for their last year.

Local kid at one of their easiest positions to recruit.

If they missed on him, the DEFCON alert would've bumped up a level.

Current TE's on the roster and their position recruiting rank
FR Lukas Ungar 13th
FR Benjamin Yurosek 19th
SO Bradley Archer 20th
JR Tae Le 73rd (WO)
SR Tucker Fisk 25th
SR Kyle McCombs 137th (WO)
5th Scooter Harrington 28th

2021 Recruit
Taylor 27th

All are 3 star prospects. Not exactly loaded with talent. Their average ranking, excluding their WOs, is 22.

Notre Dame's average, for comparison, is 10 with five of the seven players and current commits rated as 4 stars. Tremble is one of the two 3 stars so...grain of salt.

Stanford released their depth chart for Oregon game:

QB - Mills
RB - Jones
WR - Wilson, Wedington, Fehoko
TE - Fisk
OL - Rouse, Miller, Dalman, Bragg, Sarell
DL - Booker, Wade-Perry, Schaffer
LB - Robinson, Miezan, Fox, Reid
DB - Kelly, Bonner, Williamson, Antoine

then this occurred:

The David Shaw Oregon Week press conference has begun. Stanford is COVID-19 free, which is a job very well done.

Dorian Maddox, Jacob Mangum-Farrar, Tristan Sinclair and Nicolas Toomer are likely out for the season. https://stanford.rivals.com/news/cardinal-again-hit-hard-by-injuries-this-time-before-playing-a-game

Kelly and Reid were starters. Sinclair and Mangum-Farrar were 2 deep players.

Stanford lists 81 scholarship players for 2020.
5th - 10 (2 former walk ons and grad transfer of air force back up qb)
Senior - 12 (3 former walk ons)
Junior - 16 (4 former walk ons)
Soph - 23 (2 former walk ons)
Fresh - 20

= 70 originally recruited scholarship players

I don’t like David Shaw in the football field, although I think he is a very good coach. But I have a new respect for him as a human being overall and the toughness his brings. Very good piece on him during Gameday.

Shaw has gotten some breaks this year to keep the boat from totally sinking.

Held onto their 24-3 halftime lead to beat the fighting Jimmy Lakes 31-26.

77% on third down, 10-13, and converting 2 of 3 misses the next down (2-2 on 4th) for an incredible conversation rate of over 92%.

Also entered the game as the highest penalized team in their conference but only flagged 3 times for 25 yards today.

Eking out a 5 point win when taking the above into consideration, a week after Booker blocks the game tying PAT and another chip shot FG to beat Cal by 1...somehow they’re 2-2 and not 0-4.

Davis Mills just declared for the draft. This will hurt the Cards.

Mills probably didn't play the equivalent of one full season in his three years at Stanford.

Simi Fehoko, Stanford's leading receiver, has declared for the draft. Fehoko had 37 receptions with the next leading WR having 19 receptions for 574 yards. The WR with the next highest yards 265 yards. Fehoko had three of their seven receiving TDs.

If every Stanford senior with a year of eligibility returns, there total scholarship count would be eighty-five. That assumes three walkons who have received scholarships have their scholarships renewed.

Stanford loses eleven seniors who do not have eligiblity left. They have signed a 2021 Class of fifteen. They've lost four more who are entering the NFL draft early.

36 of Fehoko's 37 receptions came in the last four minutes of the UCLA comeback win LOL. I don't ever remember seeing that kid play until that game.
