Stanford Recruiting and Everything Else

Seems like we have threads for our other major rivals, but none for the Cardinal. Since this rivalry appears to be renewed for the foreseeable future, and we battle over many of the same recruits, I figured I'd start a thread. Plus, I just really dislike them as a program.

Last year they signed Keller Chryst and beat us out for Solomon Thomas, Dalton Schultz and Terrence Alexander. This year they've landed Ben Edwards (our top remaining S prospect at the time) plus Cameron Scarlett and are getting a late visit from ESB. Given their academics and recent football success, they're a team I can see continuing to challenge us.

Just today they picked up another big time WR with top-tier offers:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>Four-star WR Trent Irwin talks about his decision to pick <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Stanford?src=hash">#Stanford</a> over <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/ASU?src=hash">#ASU</a> right here <a href="http://t.co/c1viVp3gwM">http://t.co/c1viVp3gwM</a> <a href="http://t.co/hSHi9ALmsS">pic.twitter.com/hSHi9ALmsS</a></p>— Adam Gorney (@adamgorney) <a href="https://twitter.com/adamgorney/status/552583989165584384">January 6, 2015</a></blockquote>

Scarlett never came close to having a committable offer from us.

Truth is, Stanford and ND compete for a lot of the same guys but ND wins far more of the recruiting battles with Stanford where we're the top 2. Edwards and Alexander are the only guys in recent memory where we finished directly second to them. For example, Solomon Thomas was awesome but he was also never coming to ND. Usually this means there is something about ND that turned them off (location, religion, etc.) that isn't a turnoff about Stanford.

The only thing that interests me about Stanford is their combination of sheer dumb luck and/or PEDs ... I mean ... "cold glove" ... that allows their players to have incredible strength gains, insane recovery times, and a statistical anomaly in terms of team health. We need to copy cat that program.

Because it's not legit. It's a cover for PEDs.

If there was a totally legal piece of equipment that was ACTUALLY better than steroids then literally everyone in every sport would be using it.

First time I've seen those numbers. With those numbers being so insanely low, why isn't this raising any red flags yet?

He's "not dedicated enough to football." And you can read between the lines on that however your want.

I, too, thought he would be great.

Before Harbaugh left, we were 3rd for Amir Carlisle behind Stanford and USC. Also, had Niklas qualified we would have lost him to Stanford.

At what point do we start talking about Shaw as not being a good recruiter? I felt last years class wasn't great and this one is under whelming as well.

Which it showed on the field. Any coach can look good when he has Andrew Luck as his QB. That really good group of linebackers is gone as well

I believe Shaw should've taken a NFL job when he had a chance. I don't see him being at Stanford in 3 years. He will be let go.

Noted this in the other thread but they just lost Arrington Farrar who was their second best rated player and I think set to play safety. Explains why they're chasing so many guys at that position.

To keep things in perspective, Stanford's AVERAGE player rating for their entire class right now is Nicco Fertitta... Notre Dame's lowest rated player by far. They have two total prospects with composite rating above 90. Only one commit -- Ben Edwards -- had an actionable offer from ND.

I could see Stanford's run coming to an end. I don't think Shaw is a good enough coach to "coach up" these low rated recruits. He should have jumped at the NFL when his stock was high and he had the chance.
