Thoughts? Feel like it's selling low on Weaver and Kelly, but still got to give it an A-.

I thought it was highway robbery. I understand the selling low comment since Kelly and Weaver both regressed but reality is Kelly won’t play very much this year again, so his stock won’t improve (should have traded last winter) and Weaver shows no signs of having a third pitch. Cards have a better catching prospect and 10 (10!) better starting pitchers at the moment. Both were expendable.

Now you get Harper. This should have no negative impact on Harper. If I hear at the presser this takes them out of the rest of the winter I will be disappointed. You sign Harper and let Ozuna walk after next year or find a way to package Fowler to the moon. There are a million ways to make it work. The Goldy trade got you at the table, now is the time to take it not just relax.

Trade Fowler anyway. Package him with a prospect and jettison that crappy contract.

I agree that the Cards made out like thieves. And the worst case scenario is that Goldy walks at years end and they get a compensation pick after a qualifying offer.

Not sure that can happen. He's got a full no trade clause and was worth -1.2 WAR in right field last year. The advanced data suggest he's hitting more fly balls, softer contact in general, and is substantially slower on the basepaths. And still has 3 years @14.5 million/yr left on his contract. I'd be worried what prospect a noncontender would ask for.

My hope is that he was more injured last year than he let on and didn't want to admit it, and will come back in the spring more like his 2017 self to rebuild some value.

You'll love Goldy, he's a great player and great human.
It was a nice few years to be a DBacks fan. Looking like total rebuild for us.

Makes the loss of Alex Reyes last year even harder. Had he stayed healthy the Cards could have used him for 150+ innings this year.

Also upsets me that Mo didn’t use the deep farm system to trade for a young starter. Lot of question marks behind Mikolas and Flaherty.

And Wacha and Waino

Wacha missed the last 3 months of the season due to injury and has a history of injuries. Waino, as much as I love him, has only pitched 163 innings with an ERA of nearly 5.00 over the previous two seasons. I think they qualify as question marks.

One of my first broken heart sports memories... grew up loving the Cards as much as the Halos... I thought that was the end of the world. Little did I know I had the Cleveland Browns to teach me all about reality over the next few years.

I think Dakota Hudson will be the 5th rotation guy, he pitched pretty damn well yesterday.

I still don't understand how the Cards got Goldschmidt

But Hudson likely isn't going to give the Cards 180 innings. They need guys who can stay on the mound consistently and eat quality innings.

I'm pissed that the Yankees signed Gio Gonzalez for $3mil + incentives. Some part of me would have been thrilled if the Cards offered him $5 million to be the #3 starter between Flaherty and Wacha. Then if CMart comes back healthy, he can stretch out in the bullpen and eventually slot back in the rotation when someone gets hurt.

Goldschmidt extension 5/$130. I was told to expect this kinda deal if he hits FA, and to expect the Birds to exceed it just to keep him around if they waited a year, possibly up to 5/$150. So I'll gladly take 5/130

Also, Dakota Hudson is indeed the 5th starter.

Yeah, we took 2 of our kids to the game. The fans showed so much love it was unreal. Standing ovations every time he walked to the plate and raucous cheers every time his name was announced.

We were able to walk the field with the kids as well, pretty cool experience.

Jack Flaherty won NL pitcher of the month for August. Dude has been on an absolute tear. 4-1, 0.71 ERA in August I believe. Definitely has been keeping the redbirds in contention for the NL Central. Even with a few games on the Cubs, I won't believe they've got it until the Cubs are mathematically eliminated from the division.
