What do you expect? USF is a team that has performed fairly well over the past few years, they're on the road against a team that is ranked in the top 20 that still needs to prove itself, and they figure most people expect them to lose. I could see them being "quietly optomistic" .... nothing to lose if they don't come to SB maing some brash statements on how they are going to kick the Irish butt.

The point of my post was to shed some light on the psychology of the players themselves. Honestly, what I would expect from them is pretty much in line with what I expect from most D1 athletes, runnin' their mouths about how good they are, or how we won't know what hit us. This isn't something that one of the players is saying to the media in some type of PR move, it's a look inside the mentality of the locker room.

Do I believe we will be prepared? Absolutely. Do I also believe that the Bulls are a very athletic team in flux that have the potential to make a big splash this year? Yes. Would I choose them as our home opener? Nope.

Ok, what one of you posted LOL.... Got this off usfbulls

"After perusing this thread, I thought I would share where ND fans are coming from in their confidence. ND fans feel that ND should have vastly superior athletes to USF because ND has recruited very well over the past five years. In fact, this year's senior class was ranked #2 in the nation by scout.com ,and four of ND's five classes (including 5th year players) were ranked in the top 20. The problems at ND over the years have been coaching and not talent. Many of ND's players were also heavily recruited by schools such as USC and Florida. The difference has been that good coaching staffs, like Pete Carrol's and Urban Meyer's, develop their talent, while ND's talent has languished. What ND fans are counting on is that Brian Kelly's second teams have been much better than his first teams at each of the three schools he has previously coached at, and that this year's ND team will make the same improvements that GVSU, CMU, and Cincinnati made. Coupled with having elite talent on the roster, that improvement should leave ND with a very good football team.

This is where the comparisons to games against Pitt aren't really relevant. Many ND fans think that this year's ND team will be much better than the Charlie Weis, Tyrone Willingham, and Bob Davie coached teams because they believe that Brian Kelly is a better coach than his predecessors. If you go back to the Lou Holtz years at ND, the Irish didn't have much trouble with middle of the road programs like Pitt and Purdue. That trouble didn't start until ND itself became a middle of the road program, which occurred because of poor coaching and player development. ND fans who are expecting a Holtzi-an performance out of this year's team are expecting ND to beat both Pitt and USF handily, which is where the Pitt comparisons become irrelevant.

With all that being said, I personally don't believe any of this. I thought that Brian Kelly showed signs of being in over his head last year, a la Rich Rodriguez at Michigan. There is a big difference between winning at a Big East school and winning at a school where every opponent circles your game on their calendar and you every coaching move is questioned. The decision to chuck balls into the end zone in the last minute of the Tulsa game, when a field goal would have won the game, showed that Kelly was in over his head at that point. The success and failure of this year's team will depend on how well he can lead them. For the record, I think Skip Holtz is a better coach and that a lot of ND fans are going to be shocked by the outcome of the game. I also expect that you people are going to be upset when ND fans start clamoring for your coach after the game."

That's actually not a bad breakdown at all...until the last paragraph. No way is that a ND fan. Unless of course, he resides at NDNation, where they are still waiting for Bob Stoops to walk through that door.

Reading some of the other comments from fans is funny. I'm sure people laugh at some of the stuff we say as well. Some of their fans do get it...they may be predicting victory but they know it will not be easy. Others...not so much LOL.

I was also reading the other comments on that thread. This comment made me laugh.

"I don't think that your QB is going to be settled in just right and I think that this being the first game of the season gives us a slight advantage."

Does this comment make any sense to anyone? How would they get the slight advantage at QB just because its the first game of the season? Last time I checked this is the first game of the season for both teams an both of the quaterbacks arre in the second year of a new offense. It also seems that BJ Daniels makes more mistakes than Crist or Rees. So how does this give them a slight advantage?

They have an athletic team and the D is supposed to be one of their strengths with the LB core the best in the BE. They are a dangerous team to start the season with.

I'm not saying that the guy is correct, but I think what he's trying to say is that Daniels played in 12 of USF's 13 games last year, including their bowl game. So he's still in "rhythmn", so to speak. In the meantime, Crist missed the last 4 games of last season, is coming off of a major injury, and it's his first game back. So who knows if he will really be ready?

Again, even if Crist is not 100% ready, it may not make a difference in the game. But I think that is probably what the poster is alluding to.

My only USF concern is Crist being wildly innacurate on short throws again this year. If he fixes that (which there's no indication he has), we're going to have a 10 win year.

Pretty good run down of their scrimmage and where Coach Skip sees problems.
Really worried about depth on the second line.
With injuries mounting elsewhere, quarterbacks wore red non-contact jerseys Saturday. "We weren't looking to see how many hits they could take," Holtz said. First-team offense went twice into red zone but fumbled a snap on one drive and had a penalty on another, settling for field goals.

From another thread in at bullspen
Depth still main concern after second USF scrimmage
USF DE Claude Davis turned in one of biggest plays in scrimmage, returning fumble for a score. DE Ryne Giddins said was 40 or 50 yards."-Adam Atkins
Interesting point the poster made was that no one on the offense ran him down.
Yet another poster pointed out that Davis runs a 4.77 40.

I'm not really sure there's anyway to spin it as an okay thing that our #1 offense couldn't punch in a TD against our #2 defense with 2 redzone attempts. ND's defense is almost certainly going to be overrated but not to a level of anyone's #2 defense.

Ill take the Dayne from last year into this game over Rees! Every single time!! Dayne with all his bad throws and what not, was still a better QB than Rees was with a developed D/running game and a dumbed down O. USF shouldn't be in this game come 2nd half.

If there #1 offense cant score against there #2 defense then they should be in for a long day on 9/3. If that offense cant catch a defensive player that runs a 4.7 40, how are they supposed to have a lot of speed? I dont wish for anyone to get hurt but with all of these "minor" injuries they are having, that could play a big role come gameday

My only concern is there overall speed as a team, there Qb is very quick there D gets to the ball quick, there just very very fast but i think good focused ND fundemental football will beat them

I had a dream about this game last night...It didn't go well...ND's offense struggled the whole game, turning the ball over. The D was good...The game headed into the fourth quarter tied 6-6...ND ended up losing 13-6 as South Florida got a touchdown with less than two minutes.

This was the worst nightmare I've had in a while :(

I think you guys are getting a little too worried about this game. Everyone says that USF has speed, is this the first team that we have played that has a lot of speed? Last time I checked, so did Miami and USC and we beat both of them. We have a lot of speed also. If you think we are looking past this game ou are crazy. Brian Kelly even said he has never coached a team that was more focused than this team. The offense will be better than last year because both quarterbacks have a lot more experience and they know the offense better. The defense will be better because they understand the 3-4 now and there is a lot more depth on the d-line. You guys are getting worried about something you cant control, at the end of the day its just a game and life goes on.

I have a feeling this has Notre Dame vs Nevada written all over it.

I don't recall ever saying I think Rees should start. I just pointed out that any game evidence we have (last year's games plus this year's spring game), Crist has been inconsitent and inaccurate on short and medium passes. Hopefully he's improved. If he has we will win a lot of games this year. If it's the same story as last year, I'll be content with 9 wins.
