Do me one favor IrishinTN - stop skipping leg day ;)

I was actually born with severely clubbed feet. Took two years of surgeries, casts, walking shoes and therapy just so I could walk. It's caused my legs to be on the thin side. However it's never stopped me from playing sports and running at least three times a week, even thought it hurts like heck due to the tendonitis and arthritis that are leftovers from all that stuff. My left leg is especially bad and my left foot is so disfigured they wouldn't let me in the military. I don't like my legs either, but I'm stuck with them so so are you.

It sure looks like a Kingsnake. Did it try to constrict around your arm? If so, it definitely is. Not poisonous and Kingsnakes eat other snakes, especially water moccasin's, which I hate and have a very nasty temperament to go along with their venom.

Yep. My wife had to hold it so it wouldn't keep wrapping around me. Tail shook like a rattlesnake, too, which was funny since he didn't hAve a rattle. He also emitted a pretty rancid stink the more we handled him.

You ran into one of the apex predators of other snakes. Glad you were able to save him, he is no threat to anybody in the neighborhood. Nicely done!

so, when trying to determine if a snake is poisonous is the "arrow shaped head" the first thing I need to be looking for?

is that how most people can tell?

For the most part, yes. Look for arrow shaped head because poison sacks are behind their eyes.

That is a good way. Also look at their eyes, poisonous snakes have elliptical or slanted pupils, non poisonous snakes' eyes are usually round. Poisonous snakes will also frequently have a pit between their eyes. But even a non poisonous snake can put a pretty big hurt on you so be careful handling any of them.

true or false:

a poisonous snake bite if left untreated will always kill you.

I saw some HBO documentary about these religious snake handlers and I believe many of them have been bitten and sought no medical attention and survived. So I'll go with false.

Damn I am bummed I missed this thread until now. I am an amateur (and untrained) herpetologist. I love snakes. My wife teases me because when we go for walks and hikes (before in California and now in Tennessee) I am ALWAYS scanning for snakes. I have also owned quite a few different types of snakes over the years.

I like them because snakes are so essential to the balance of an ecosystem. A healthy snake population usually translates in to a healthy ecosystem in that area. They take care of a lot of other pests that are much more damaging to people, pets, gardens, etc. Plus I just think they are damn cool.

As others have said, I would definitely say it is a Kingsnake. Definitely one of my favorite varieties and most certainly a badass to other snakes. The good news about the glue trap is that if any remains on the snake, it might come off during the next skin shed or two, so it probably won't affect the snake too much. The friction on the ground might also dislodge it.

And IrishinTN, seeing he Chewbacca shirt makes me know we will get along even more famously than before. Can't wait to knock back a few with you in a couple weeks!

Cheers!
