They can be for whatever you like really... there are obvious aspects that you mentioned... and you can mix obviously, it just cahnges the combined stats.

I don't believe I rock a uniform armor set very often... I'll have to double check on that, I think it's a combo of a few different types that match and go well together stat wise.

I'm at whiterun trying to use 'the grindstone' to strengthen my axe. They required 'ingot' so I went in and bought some and double checked to make sure I've used the 'smithining > steel smithining' perk, and it's still telling me 'I lack the required components'.

What the deuce?

Does it make a difference if you mix your attire with heavy and light Armour? I have a mix right now, I assume 'light' is for attacking from a distance, and heavy is for hand to hand.

Acamp's right, light and Heavy Armor can be used for anything. Hell, you can be a Mage in Heavy Armor, you can make it work if you want. There are perks that allow you to get a bonus to your armor values if you're wearing matching sets, that's something to look into if you're taking a lot of damage. Heavy Armor tends to be better at taking big hits, while Light Armor allows you to move a little quicker and avoid damage later on. I tend to use Heavy Armor when I'm rockin' a melee fighter, and Light when I'm playing a bow user or Thief.

Depending on what item you are trying to work on... sword, axe, armor whatever... it'll list next to the weapon in the weapon select screen what items you need to work on said weapon... if you are missing any particular item it'll be greyed out in the list. That's what you need...

I hope that helps, I am at work and going off memory here.

I hate heavy armor... add one axe to it and all of your carry weight is gone... how do you Heavy Armor guys ever have room for stuff in your inventory carry weight wise??

Followers. Sell tons of shit. I don't carry much more than my armor, one shield, one sword, and healing potions.

Ah, good point, I am always scared of getting my followers killed though, and they tend to blow my cover (I like to sneak in case that wasn't already stated like 50 times... lol)... I rarely use them.

like coming across a cave I've never been to before and going in with just basics, clearing it and just taking EVERYTHING... then going straight to the nearest town and selling it all...

Fortify Carry Weight is my very favoritest potion...

There's a perk that makes it weightless as long as you have all heavy armor on man. That's how a heavy armor/one hander does things.

I'm running around seeing how far I can stretch the map right now, discovering every little hut and villiage. Kind of fun.

I hope you have a horse, makes random exploration much easier!

That's a great idea, but I've been on foot. I've been 'fast traveling' to the outermost locations and then running outside of them.

Looking at the map below, you see Skyrim is at the top. I assume the first 4 games were involving the other territories? If so I suppose they'll have a few more games since there's more countries?

Yup. TES V was Skyrim, of course.
TES IV was Cyrodiil
TES III Morrowind
TES II was Hammerfall maybe, but I'm going off fuzzy memory, never played it myself
Can't tell ya where the first one was located, I can't be arsed to look it up right now.

As far as I know Elder Scrolls Online will involve all the territories. I imagine Bethesda will continue to pump out single player TES games as long as they sell like hotcakes, which isn't dying anytime soon.

Interesting note: Bethesda actually had hidden maps of Cyrodiil and Morrowind located in the game files, but they were never employed. Got to wonder what they were planning to do with those.

Just knowing the little I know about Skyrim and not have played any of the others, is there anyone on IE who has in fact played all of them up to Skyrim? Skyrim itself is so vast, IDK how you could possibly play and beat them all and still maintain some semblance of reality, lol. I'd start wearing leather and carrying tusks around if I played them all.

I think the map in Morrowind was literally the size of England.

Minor plot spoiler: I'm trying really hard to make my character a "good guy." I won't join the Thieves' Guild or the Dark Brotherhood, for example. Lo and behold, tonight I get kidnapped in a daedra's haunted house and he forces me to kill a dude with a rusty mace. Eff that guy.

Ok, I was wrong about Elder Scrolls II, it was Daggerfall, not Hammerfell. Daggerfall is in High Rock, home of the Bretons. Wiki says that the game world was 229,848 square kilometers, or roughly the size of Great Britain...which is pretty damn impressive. Never played it of course, but it was and older DOS based game.

Elder Scrolls I was titled Arena. and it seemed to visit numerous cities in Tamriel, but I can't find an answer if it spanned multiple continents or not. It seemed to be centered mostly in the Imperial City, which would be in Cyrodiil. It was also DOS based, as oppose to the later games III-V which are all Windows based. The jump from II to III is a stark contrast.

As far as people that have played all of them, I know my old professor in college did. He was the one that got me started on Morrowind. While Skyrim is vast, I don't believe Morrowind was larger, it seemed a bit smaller in comparison if you ask me. Oblivion felt rather small in comparison as well, but then again the advent of fast travel made traveling rather quick and painless, it shrunk the world in a way.

 I feel your pain. The EXACT same thing happened to me on my first play through. I decided to skip Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood first time around and try to play it "good," only to get sucked into the Molag Bal Daedric quest. Sometimes you're at the mercy of the gods/Daedric entities. Unfortunately theres no way to avoid killing that guy once you've talked to him and you've entered the house.

If it helps, I don't consider the Thieves Guild to be necessarily evil now that I've done the quest line a few times. I consider them more along the lines of Skyrim's version of Robin Hood, although they do keep a cut for themselves. It's certainly worth playing through the quest line at least once, so make sure you revisit it. I can't say the same for the Dark Brotherhood, they certainly aren't as good natured...but it's also a quest line worth doing once.

I'm not enough of a gamer to do multiple play-throughs. The last game I played prior to Skyrim was Oblivion and the one before that was probably GTA4 or FIFA in college.
