Schaffer, a two-year captain, was the 2011 American Eagle Outfitters Big East Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He is just the fourth player in Big East history to register at least 100 tackles in three consecutive seasons, culminating in a career-high 114 stops in the 2011 season. He earned All-Big East First Team honors in 2011 after he ranked third in the conference in tackles (8.8 per game)
