Wow. What a weasel. JoePa already had an agreement to leave after the 2011 season (that none of the trustees knew of), but then tries to spin himself as acting righteously and walking away because of the scandal. Thank God he was fired. The man was an egotistical snake, I wish he were still alive so that he could be charged.
When the scandal broke last Nov. a coworker of mine at my former company insisted that Joe filled his moral responsibility. I, ofcourse argued, and she started getting belligerent asking if something like that happend at my company, would I call the cops? And not go to the CEO? I said that if someone were stealing staplers, no I would not call the cops, but if children were getting raped in the bathrooms I would tell the CEO, and if the police were not here within an hour...I would call them myself.
She went on to say that I would not/should not call the police, and my only responsibility is to notify the CEO. I was shocked. This was a 50 year old woman. I just said I guess I am a better person than employee. She said "you are just naive, and have no idea what you would do in that situation". Honestly, that is one situation where I know exactly what decision I would make.
Tear the statue down. If a church had a statue of a priest who served as a combat chaplin in WWII, did missionary work in Kenya, and fed/educated childeren all over the world for 60 years, but was involved in covering up for a child serial rapist, his statue would be DEMANDED to be removed. Joe was a football coach, and that is it. He wasn't a missionary, he never did anything heroic in his entire life, and when confront with the biggest decision he'd ever have to make, he went the wrong way to save his reputation.
