Happy game week. Glad it's finally here.

https://irishsportsdaily.com/s/15717...-florida-state

Pretty nice breakdown from Jamie U on FSU. Just about what you'd expect: All signs point to FSU improving this year in year 2 of Norvell's tenure, though that's mainly because of how horrible their numbers were last year; the only direction they can go is up. They brought in double digit transfers, many of them are expected to start defensively.

Our biggest strength defensively, DL play, should match up very well against their biggest weakness offensively: OLine play. Their OLine graded out horribly last year,, as you may recall; they finished 87th in pass block grade by PFF, 104th in run blocking, and the offense as a whole was 108th in havoc rate.

Makes you wonder why the spread is only at -7.5 for the Irish; I presume the oddsmakers are taking into account ND's turnover on offense coupled with the atmosphere, which should be electric. This is an FSU team that knocked off UNC at home last year, quite a surprise at the time.

Seems pretty simple: Start fast, we roll. I expect the Irish will look to wear them down early and often with the running game and look to exploit the defense by opening up some play action with Coan and co. later on in the game.

I’d like to see a couple scores off defense. A return would be nice but when’s the last time we seen a kickoff return taken back for a score?

CJ sanders is the last one that comes to mind. Seems like we had one several years back that got called back (probably 2016 lol). We have some guys we could put back there that could do some damage, but will we ever put the time and effort into that part of the game?
im with you, definitely would like to see a defensive score or two.

Weather should be miserably humid. Stadium will be electric for as long as FSU can be competitive. Without having seen the offense in a game situation, I have no idea of the outcome. ND should win there’s too many variables right now. I wouldn’t bet that spread for anything.

Michael Young should have had one vs. USC back in 2019 but he flat out dropped the ball on his way to the endzone.

Kelly should have a presser today around noon, right? This is where the Liufau injury will finally be discussed and then we'll get some idea of where we're at headed into game 1.

It's game week fellas, I can't wait!

It's been miserably humid in the midwest the past two weeks, 100% humidity some days with heat index well into the 100s. So I don't think that will really factor in too much, the boys should be used to it. Coupled with the fact that it's an evening kick, that should help a bit.

No surprises in the depth chart for the most part.

- Bertrand at WILL
- Kiser OR Pryor OR Moala is I guess a slight surprise
- Takacs OR Bauman
- Flemister did not get a OR tag
- Austin is alone as starter, not a OR with Wilkins

I'm really nervous about this game. Not because of FSU but because I'm extremely concerned about the quarterback position. If ND can't consistently move the ball through the air on Sunday it's going to be a frustrating season.

I’ll put you someone at ease that there is no reason to be “extremely concerned”. Coan’s floor is well above that.

I would agree, didn't he break Wisconsin records for Completion %? And I think outside of Quintez Cephus, you can argue he has higher ceiling talent here in 2021. I have high expectations for Coan, personally.

I’ll refine my meaning and say I’m sure Coan will be at least serviceable and won’t turn the ball over. But if he can’t punish FSU for stacking the box or throw over a DB in single coverage a few times then I’m getting really worried about the better defenses on our schedule.

I think you’re going to be pleasantly surprised

Interesting that Justin Ademilola is listed at Vyper and not DE. Thought it was the other way around.

Especially for one of our posters. When asked about it Kelly didnt exactly give glowing reviews of Kiser, especially in relation to 1 on 1 coverage. At least that was my take.

Me too. Sounds like all 3 will play and someone will win the job in the game(s). Surprised Moala is all the way back from a torn achilles

So with game day only 6 days away we've only had two major injuries in camp, Liafau and Ekwonu. Better than most years, knock on wood.

I think we’ll see a sum of parts type Rover usage. Kiser as the down to down LB. Pryor in certain pass situations. Moala also in certain situations as maybe blitzing a lot as kind of a unleash the dogs type player like Bauer

It's airing on ABC at 7:30, Joe Tessitore and Greg McElroy on the call. I don't believe anything has changed on that front.
