The past is past, but I just ran into this article and thought I would share. Dude is kinda an a$$ but he brings up a couple valid points here and there.

Kelly may dig offense, but Irish coach learns to love defense - NCAA Football - CBSSports.com

edit: sorry if this was posted somewhere else and I missed it, it's from the 24th.

I can't take Doyle seriously. A few years ago he wrote piece about how one day, 20 or 30 years from now, we'll all look at Notre Dame the same way we look a the service academies today. Yes, we all know they were a great power once, but now they're just competing for 8 & 9 win seasons and the Armed Forces Bowl.

Who knows if Lynch or Tuitt would've made a difference vs Michigan? It was what it was. The secondary leaving a receiver w/ a 50-yard cushion had a lot more to do w/ that loss than the d-line.

This is the first article of Doyle's I've ever read, and I already can't stand him. He accuses Kelly of lying for saying that Tuitt and Lynch "didn't play much" instead of "didn't play at all"? What a little b!tch. Just another hack "journalist" trying to draw eyeballs with a controversial piece about ND.

I sincerely doubt it. Kelly stated several times why he didn't play Lynch and Tuitt, and it makes perfect sense-- Robinson is a threat to take it to house on every play, so Kelly played only those veterans who could be counted on to remain disciplined and gap-conscious. Tuitt and Lynch aren't there yet.

Maybe they would have sacked Robinson a couple times, but it seems just as likely that one of them would have released Robinson for a big gain.

The secondary leaving a receiver w/ a 50-yard cushion had a lot more to do w/ that loss than the d-line.

Amen. How can Doyle pin the Michigan loss on Kelly's choice of DL personnel? Aside from a handful of poorly defended lobs by Robinson, ND utterly shut down the skunkbears. We weren't trying to pressure Robinson by design; Kelly was afraid he'd run all over us again.

That loss is squarely on the secondary.

Never said this author was any type of authority, or even correct in any of his premises. I agree wholeheartedly that if Gray makes a play on the ball rather than looking like a blind scarecrow, we are 3-1 and everyone on here is much less uptight.

Just thought that it was an interesting topic for conversation, looking at how Kelly has been forced to win on the defensive side of the ball this year.

Obviously hindsight is 20/20. Should we have put in the young guns to get after Denard? Should we have dropped 9 into coverage? For the love of God I heard someone on here say we should have subbed Floyd in. These points to me are asinine. IMO, that's not the take home message.

The message I took from the article is, like any coach worth his salt, Kelly is finding ways to win. Will there be growing pains? Of course there will be, building a culture of winning takes time.

Oh, I understand. I just don't particularly care for him.

He does have some good points in this one, but what I was trying in part to get at was, based on past stuff from him I've read, I can't even really take any praise he gives the Irish seriously. I find him to be one of those columnists who writes about what's popular today, and kinda hopes you forgot what he wrote yesterday, if you know what I mean.

Yeah, that was the part where I kinda said to myself, "Typical Doyle piece." Hair-splitting like that just to paint someone in a bad light is more than a little ridiculuous, I don't care if it's my team's coach or not.

Yeah I feel ya, 2-3 Floyds? Lets get real here.

Yeah, I should have stopped reading after I saw that, but I was compelled to see if there were any more gems.

It's going to hurt when Floyd graduates. TJ is probably the best possession receiver we have after Floyd, unless you count Eifert. We'll really need some WR's to step up next year, otherwise we'll have a hard time with the passing game.
