Suggestions:

Demetrice Martin

Free Agent. Not retained by Chip Kelly. Michigan St alum. MSU just lost Harlan Barnett (Co-DC / S) to FSU. They need a safety coach so ND probably would have serious comp here..

What makes Coach Meat a great pick? Kids LOVE him. seriously in the Jimmy Lake, Donte Williams, Kerry Cooks level. He knows SoCal / westcoast AND best yet, he has Houston / S. Texas as a UCLA recruiter. Would love him and Lyght flying into College Station on Leprechaun One and causing Elko to lose his remaining hairs

Maybe Jon Heacock? I find it interesting that we heard his name mentioned right before Lea was reported as the guy. Maybe they're gonna try to get a guy with coordinator experience for Lea to fall back on instead of going after an ace recruiter.

Jon Heacock

Maybe it's a bucket list job for him? Grew up in the geographic cradle of coaches between Canton and Youngstown, so maybe.

Another long time professional would bring stability. He's not just a current DC, he was a DC at IU for a few years and a DC under Tressell at YSU before taking over as HC of the Penguins. Plus, went to a small Ohio college so you know he knows his sh!t.

When it comes to recruiting however, you want Coach Meat but that might not be an option with MSU in the market.

I know how much we want a great recruiter, but maybe we can get someone who is older and has more experience than is justified for just being a safeties coach by just giving them more money. If one of these guys is close to retiring maybe they would be looking to make as much as they can for their last few years.

Was the White Sox when I was playing there. Midwest League was awesome. Cubs were in Rockford back then. The Howard Johnson we stayed at was top notch, LOL. It didn't beat the Pizazz in Burlington IA, though.

Excerpt from an article from January 2014 when Joseph was contemplating a move from Nebraska to Texas A & M.
Assistant coach Terry Joseph mulls move to Texas A&M Aggies - Texas A&M Aggies- ESPN

Given the short tenures at some pretty decent schools. I can only assume it's about the money. If that is the case, I wouldn't expect him to stay long at ND either.

“They offered me the job,” Joseph said to the newspaper. "It’s a lot of money, but I told Bo I would come back and talk to him before I took the job.

“Now, if you say, ‘It’s a lot of money and Nebraska isn’t going to match it?’ Then, yeah, it’s a done deal, because that’s what it comes down to, getting my contract extended and me getting a lot of money.”

How's that for a money quote?

How does he rate vs. say the DB coach from UCLA everyone seems to want?

On field? No idea.

Recruiting?

Coach Meat is Top 5 nationally but does most of his damage out west. Played at Michigan St so it wouldn't be uncharted waters for him geographically and he did travel coast to coast for UCLA

Terry Joseph on the other hand has experience in the Big 12 / SEC / B1G & ACC footprints besides his specialty of Louisiana. That makes a lot of sense even if he's just an 8 as a closer vs Martin's 9.9.

I'm still waiting for MSU to hire Martin, they need a safety coach too. Dantonio was his position coach at MSU.

Did you mean Silver Hawks? We used to go to a lot of games back then. I tailed off when the DBacks took over (I'm a Sox fan) and then I moved into the Chicago burbs.

Oddly enough when I moved into Chicago my office was a few blocks from Kane Co.'s and Ron Kittle was the mgr of the Schaumburg Flyers, he was our next door neighbor in Gary. Took a lot of customers to games in the late 90's, early 00's. Kane Co had a great set up back then. Same party atmosphere as spring training.

They just hired Paul Haynes as DBs coach. They do have an extra spot because the new 10th assistant they could still use for a safeties coach though.

According to multiple sources and first indicated at IrishIllustrated.com Friday morning, we were told that Joseph was the lead candidate for the open role in South Bend and the coach we believed would fill that role with the Fighting Irish moving forward.

Sources indicated at the time that Notre Dame was in an advanced position recruiting Joseph to join the Irish staff, filling the defensive side of the ball after defensive coordinator Mike Elko’s exit to Texas A&M earlier this month.

At this time, we've learned that Joseph has informed North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora of his decision, although an official announcement has not come from Notre Dame yet.

Joseph is currently on staff with the Tar Heels and has been there for one season. Notre Dame faced Joseph’s secondary in Chapel Hill in October during Ian Book’s first start. The sophomore quarterback finished 17-of-31 for 146 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

Prior to that, he was the defensive backs coach at Texas A&M. Before his time in College Station, Joseph had stops at Nebraska, Tennessee, Louisiana Tech, LSU and Washington State.

Joseph’s pass defense at Texas A&M ranked No. 4 nationally in passing yards allowed per game and No. 18 in pass efficiency defense.

With Nebraska in 2012, the Cornhuskers led the nation in pass defense and ranked No. 2 in pass efficiency defense. His unit held opponents under 50-percent completion percentage.

Joseph is a Louisiana native and has strong ties to the south.

Why does he move around so much?

Not sure but the guy knows when to jump ship. Left UT the year before Dooley got fired, left Nebraska the year before Pelini got fired, and the same with Sumlin at A&M. Doesn’t bode well for Larry Fedora at Carolina.

Doesn't look like he'll be here after a couple of years, but as long as he can coach.

...or the future of Brian Kelly.

He’s on borrowed time as it is. Would have never guessed he’d make it to year 9.

Top 4 in ND history for wins and is realistically going to pass Leahy in less than 2 years with less seasons coaching. He needs 31 wins over the next 3 years to Tie Lou in the same amount of time.. He's 36 short of Knute who coached for 13. I think he's done a pretty good job, especially considering all those who came before him starting in 1996

... I get the times have changed in terms of scheduling and amount of games, but keep it on perspective

Don't disagree. After he seemed to be looking at an NFL job after his 3rd year, I just assumed he wouldn't last as long as he has.
