Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has died at his home in the Vatican at 95, Vatican officials announced.

“With sorrow I inform you that the Pope Emeritus, Benedict XVI, passed away today at 9:34 in the Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican. Further information will be provided as soon as possible," said the Director of the Holy See press office Matteo Bruni’s statement.

The Vatican press office has said that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI’s body will lie in state in St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican for the faithful to pay their respects.

No further details have been announced.

After his surprise resignation in February 2013 at the age of 85, he was only known to have left the tiny sovereign state briefly and was rarely seen in public.

I wonder if he wasn't having issues with dementia or some other illness and that's why he abruptly stepped down? That always kind of made me wonder. Can't say I was a big fan as I'm fairly certain it was under his papacy that the language rewrites of the mass 15ish years ago were enacted. Some of the responses and changes still drive me crazy to this day. "And with your spirit." as oppose to just "And also with you." That's not exactly a traditional phrase one would ever say in English. The Nicene Creed changes were often completely unnecessary. Changing a line like:

"Begotten, not made, one in being with the Father;"
to
"Begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;"

Why do this? It means the same damn thing, but we've added a horribly awkward word to make the mass even stuffier than it already was for many struggling Catholics in modern times. As if children weren't already just reciting it out of habit without a thought to the words. Another:

"I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen."
to
"I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible."

Completely unnecessary again. I know I'm splitting hairs, and yeah the changes have been around for a full decade and a half at this point, but it gets under my skin still to this day. There was just no good reason to make the adjustments. "Closer to the original Latin." No. There were no improvements, it only served to make the responses weirder, the underlying meaning did not change. It's as if someone was given a Latin to English dictionary and took the most literal translation with no other considerations.

I do have a favorite Pope Benedict moment though. When he visited the US and the Army Chorus did their rendition of the Battle Hymn of the Republic...it was awesome. I've seen a lot of performances, but it's still my favorite. I wish there was a better video. Love the harmonies and everyone waving flags at the end, gives me chills.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

~Amen

I don't know about snowmobiling anymore. Gave away my machine a few years back. In 2008, I lost three very special, responsible, and careful co-workers to an avalanche that claimed a total of 8 lives. I just can't compute the risk/rewards at all.

I grew up sledding but I'd NEVER go sledding in the mountains in fresh powder.

Jeff Beck: British guitar legend dies aged 78
This is just soul crushing for me. I've been a HUGE fan since I first discovered him in the early 70's as a 12-year-old beginning guitar player. I've long thought he was absolutely the best guitar player in rock history, even better than Hendrix. His family announced that he died after suddenly becoming sick with bacterial menengitis. Dang, this one really bothers me. One of my three biggest guitar heroes gone.

Charles White, USC Heisman Trophy winner and national champion, dies at age 64

Man was he a thorn in our side. Frustrated me watching him play against ND. Passed away from cancer. Apparently in decline the last few years and had been in assisted living. RIP Charles. You were a great one.

A bruising, battering ram of a tailback, White barreled his way to one of the most decorated careers, not just in USC history, but the history of college football. The Los Angeles native helped lift USC to a national championship in 1978, won the Heisman Trophy in 1979 and set 22 school, Pac-12, NCAA and Rose Bowl records over a storied four-year run that still ranks atop the record books for career rushing yards at USC.

There are heart issues and there are hard living issues that create heart issues. Both Elvis and Lisa Marie didn't make it easy on their ticker.

Too bad. She had his eyes. BTW, she also buried her son who committed suicide.

Not easy being Elvis's daughter.

I'm pretty sure Elvis' mother died relatively early from a heart condition as well.

Being a celebrity or the family member of a celebrity, or growing up as a wealthy person in the limelight sounds like all fun & games until you see it up close and personal, or live through it. Look at how many of those people end up with major substance abuse issues, suicide, their kids totally screwed up, and etc. How many child actors have happy, normal adult lives? Damn few compared to the general population. Look at all the kids of big music and acting stars (or political giants too). An inordinate number are messed up people with major issues. It's not impossible, but it's hard to raise normal kids who are mentally and emotionally healthy in a celebrity environment.
