I wonder if he wasn't having issues with dementia or some other illness and that's why he abruptly stepped down? That always kind of made me wonder. Can't say I was a big fan as I'm fairly certain it was under his papacy that the language rewrites of the mass 15ish years ago were enacted. Some of the responses and changes still drive me crazy to this day. "And with your spirit." as oppose to just "And also with you." That's not exactly a traditional phrase one would ever say in English. The Nicene Creed changes were often completely unnecessary. Changing a line like:
"Begotten, not made, one in being with the Father;"
to
"Begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;"
Why do this? It means the same damn thing, but we've added a horribly awkward word to make the mass even stuffier than it already was for many struggling Catholics in modern times. As if children weren't already just reciting it out of habit without a thought to the words. Another:
"I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen."
to
"I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible."
Completely unnecessary again. I know I'm splitting hairs, and yeah the changes have been around for a full decade and a half at this point, but it gets under my skin still to this day. There was just no good reason to make the adjustments. "Closer to the original Latin." No. There were no improvements, it only served to make the responses weirder, the underlying meaning did not change. It's as if someone was given a Latin to English dictionary and took the most literal translation with no other considerations.
I do have a favorite Pope Benedict moment though. When he visited the US and the Army Chorus did their rendition of the Battle Hymn of the Republic...it was awesome. I've seen a lot of performances, but it's still my favorite. I wish there was a better video. Love the harmonies and everyone waving flags at the end, gives me chills.
The U.S. Army Chorus, accompanied by the The Marine Band "President's Own", performs "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" for the White House arrival ceremony of Pope Benedict.
