Died last night at 82.

To me the greatest all around sportscaster ever. Started off calling Hoosier games in the 50's. His first NCAA championship game was in '61 when the Bearcats beat the Buckeyes.

Called the Game of the Century: Elvin Hayes and Houston vs Lew Alcinder and UCLA

Called Bird & Magic in '79 and every big ND game of the 70's & 80's vs. DePaul, Marquette and UCLA.

He was the voice of AFC football for NBC in my day.

Basketball, Football, Olympics, Baseball, he did it all.

And of course called ND football in the beginning of the NBC contract and then again in the late 90's.

A pro's pro. I was fortunate to live and work in OC/SD for a couple of years and be able to listen to him and Vin Scully every night. Not a fan of either team but great baseball announcing is story telling at art form level.

RIP

well said, he was truly a pros pro who could handle any assignment they gave him. and he did it for such a long time. class act. will miss that tinny, sunny, high pitched voice.

in my top 3 of all time favorite announcers (madden, summerall).

Spring Training 1982 listening to Marvin Miller address both Angels and Mariners in state of players union info session and I look to my right and sitting next to me (on the ground like all of us) was Dick Enberg. Afterwards I introduced myself and he was a real gent-very nice man and will be missed. One of my nice memories looking to my right and there was the voice of pro football/Wimbledon etc. Brief moment but you could tell he was real and good.

I got really sad thinking yesterday that I'll never hear him do a baseball game, Padres, Angels, national, whatever... ever again...

...fortunate to have lived in a time when he was doing his thing.

I think of the folks my generation has had to "colorize" sporting events through radio and television...the richness of our experiences through their perspectives...LUCKY are we.

No wonder as these giants pass on...I'd rather watch in silence than hear what "replaces" them.
