Brilliant defensive mind. As many have said, he was a man who was ahead of his time.

Buddy Ryan, the man that hated "smart niggers" from Notre Dame.*

RIP, I guess.

*If you believe Duerson's story, which of course Buddy Ryan denied.

Yikes...never heard that before. Not a nice thing for an Irishman to say about ND and especially offensive to our black athletes. At any rate, they broke the mold when they made Buddy. One of a kind. RIP.

As an Eagles fan, his years at the helm were the glory years. League's best defense and among the most exciting offense led by Randall Cunningham. Plus he owned Dallas.

Buddy left some quotes and soundbites from his time that were questionable, but the man absolutely loved his players, and always was the first person there when they needed anything. He had a unique way of motivating them, and his legacy is that of a smart mouthed genius, whose ego sometimes got the best of him. Him and Ditka couldn't co-exist because they were too much alike: stubborn hotheads that had to have things their way. Not a bad thing when you are in the business of winning games. RIP

You could also say its misguided to make broad assumptions about a man's character based off a third person account from a wife beater. ;)

The '85 Bears would not have happened without Buddy. He was a brilliant football mind that brought so much to the game. He'll be missed.

I'd really love for you to show me where I made "broad assumptions about a man's character."

It was just a joke, my man. The broad assumption was that if one is to believe Buddy said that comment, then in turn, it makes him a racist. I was just pointing out the irony of the comment coming from a guy that beat the shit out of his wife.

Not a slight to you. Just trying to put it in perspective. I would hate for people to make assumptions about my character (again, not you persay, but the quote is certainly deserving) from a quote I deny and made by a man with questionable character himself. That's all.

Sorry... read it on my phone at a red light, did not see the winky face. And you actually raise very good points.

I probably shouldn't have even posted in this thread, but that anecdote is basically the only thing I know about Buddy Ryan that was Notre Dame related.

Just watched 30 for 30 on the 85 bears...The players LOVED the guy. It was obvious. He put together some nasty defenses. RIP buddy.

The segment where Mike Singletary visits him made me tear up. The players all saw him as a father figure.

When the players found out he was leaving, Steve McMichael threw his chair, and then destroyed a whiteboard while hysterically crying, and he is one of the most macho tough guys ever. That unit was a family.

Yea..I gotta admit when they asked Singletary to read Buddy's letter aloud...and he couldn't...man that got me. I never understood McMichael until this 30 for 30...He, and all those guys were smart as hell, and knew what roles to play, and just fed off each other...amazing. They were completely invested. I've always been a steeler fan, but any steeler can appreciate that bears defense...

I obviously didn't know the man personally but I wasn't really a fan. Still, he was a great defensive coordinator, one of the best of his era. Rest in peace, coach.
