Amen. When I was in the Navy we manned the rails when pulling into Pearl Harbor as we passed the USS Arizona. Very humbling. If you haven't been to the memorial you should go. It's something you'll never forget. You can still see a sheen of oil on the surface where the Arizona is at. We actually pulled into Pearl because the world premiere of the movie Pearl Harbor was on the flight deck of my old ship, the USS John C Stennis.

I've been to a lot of Civil War battlefields, among other American battlefields from the Revolutionary and Indian Wars, but standing on the moored visitors' structure over the SS Arizona matches them all. And, yes, the oil still seeping from the sunken ship is a quiet, yet striking and real, memorial in itself.

My grandmother watched it from a hill overlooking the harbor. My grandfather was on a ship escorting the aircraft carriers thankfully.

A lot of thoughts tied to this day...

Being married into a Filipino- American military family few things are more honored than MacArthur and Pearl... In different ways obviously... Both of my grandfathers also served as a result...

A great/terrible day for our country... I often think, "my, what those brave souls who perished missed"

Thanks for posting...This one was the first...by which each generation marks its tragedies...

the response of that generation...with no "precedent" to guide their response was simply awe inspiring. I join everyone in somber reflection of the tragedy of that day...but I have immense pride in what followed.

Took my daughter and her family to dinner yesterday for her birthday. I asked my granddaughters if they knew what happened on Dec 7. Then took the opportunity to educate them.

God bless all those who gave their lives.

Titanic??

Maybe so...great point...it was tragic, for sure. Hindenburg, Titanic, and to some degree Apollo I resonate among folks as well. Not shorting them...I think Pearl, JFK, 911 ...those had perpetrators, and scar us differently...
