I think people calling Book a game manager are giving him too much credit. Don't game managers typically exhibit a higher degree of football smarts that make up for their lack of physical talents? Book can't read a defense, often makes the wrong RPO choice, wrong read on the option, can't scan a field beyond his 1st receiver, and apparently has NO IDEA where he is mid-scramble as evidenced by his numerous runs for loss out of bounds vs harmlessly tossing the ball OOB.

I don't know what Book is, but I'd struggle putting him into the game manager category...

There has to be a very short leash this week vs VT. We will need a spark.

This is the problem with not being in a conference. Lose a couple games and the season is done.

Well, it's time to get ready for 2020.

Start Phil now. Let him take his lumps and get him ready for next season. I don't care if he loses two more games. We KNOW that this team cannot take the next step with Book. To not make a move is just wasting our chance at next year.

Sadly, you're wrong. You see, ND hasn't won a BCS/NY6-level bowl.game in 25 years. That's still in play. So we still have that to play for, though I fear the prospects after last night's debacle.

Oh yeah, since four teams are in the playoff a watered down NY6 bowl is still available to us.
I stand by my statement that 2020 should be the goal for 2019 now.

Call it watered down if it makes you happy, but they're still tier I bowl games and we haven't managed to do anything but get embarrassed in them for multiple decades now.

Some of us have been saying all along that bush was very limited and others took up for him. This goes further than that this is a Brian Kelly era issue. He QB’s are good year one but after that aren’t worth much. You mean to tell the Qb’s at Cincy we’re smarter than a kid coming to ND. Bullshit.

That's just the thing though, at least in Book's case. It's my opinion that Book's first season was all smoke and mirrors. He was never really good, he just had the luxury of no tape on him as well as a simplified playbook. As soon as defensive coordinators got to look at book, they may be appropriate adjustments to load the box and the rest is history. Any team with decent personnel is able to shut him down.

PJ should be given the keys.

But BK won't. And since VT sucks Book will play well since he has talent around him compared to VT.

And everyone will shut up and BK will think "see".

But it will be fool's gold as it always has, and Book will be re-exposed next time we play a good team and take another L.

Book sucks but so does BK at managing QBs. Phill will not get a fair shake and for his sake, I hope he transfers.

His physical tools have always been limited. That's clear and has been from when he was recruited as a small three-star with a modest arm and mid-tier offers at best. He was a slightly-more-gifted Tommy Rees and, frankly, a backup plan to Wimbush and Phil.

Within those limitations, once he became the starter, it was reasonable to expect the mental side of his game to improve year-to-year (as Rees' did). It hasn't.

And so unless that's going to change it's probably wiser some time soon to go with the guy who has more physical gifts.

Time to move on. That said I expect Book to finish the season as the starter and unfortunately likely start next season as well.

Amen! Good news is NFL scouts will be able to see past a limited ND passing offense so it shouldn't impact his draft stock too much.

His best game film will be the Senior Bowl.

10 wins is still an important milestone for this program, so I’d expect him to remain the starter. To me, the real question is: if the staff is confident in PJ, do you let Book come back for a 5th year? I lean towards no.

Book has regressed big time this year.

I give him the first half of next week. If he doesn't move the ball, score some points, or show any improvement I let the PJ era start.

Concerning next year since Book has a 5th year of availability I name PJ the starting QB
ASAP.

I've seen plenty of Book. He would make a fantastic backup. Nothing more.

Time to move on to PJ, even if that means losing one more this season.

So knowing Kelly Book will finish the season, a QB competition takes place in the spring creating a giant rift in the team, PJ transfers after Book is named starter, 1 hour later Book accidentally takes the pen he used to sign his debit card receipt at the bookstore and is suspended indefinitely. Notre Dame then self reports this to the NCAA and all wins from 2017, 2018, and 2019 are vacated. A surprisingly effective Brendon Clark is injured and lost for the season in game #3. ND is forced to burn Drew Pyne's redshirt, stumbles to a 6-6 record in 2020, and I put a bullet in my head and end the pain.

If this happens then I’ll be all in favor of moving on from BK as well. #freephil

I can’t bear to watch the game again but would like more input if Book just kept missing the open guy. If we regularly had open guys then hard to fault Long for a QB who is am,I going him look bad. He did look pretty bad on his own but even his Arabs seemed to make or not make the right cut upfield. Jafar has looked awful. Worst looking back we’ve seen this year. Would like to give C’Bo a couple of touches as he runs hardest pound for pound.
Book out Phil in.
Jafar our anyone else in
Finke our Keys and anyone else in
Tremble out Brock in
White out Bo in
Hinish MTA out and Admiola, Cross, Jamion anyone else in
Elliott out Hamilton in
Gilman out anyone in until he understands he has been playin schitty lately
Dante can redshirt for next year not that he is that good
Looking forward to Daelin Hayes starting next year
Change offensive scheme, play Jones at FB
We need to up our physical constants mditioning again like when longo was gone his first year and Coney looked like a beast.
Rees out someone with more experience and real credentials in
Long calling plays out Kelly in!

Wish I could sit in the film room this week assuming we go over the disaster to pint out the failures. I have to wonder if the receiving Corp is bent on being open often but a QB with time and a pocket can’t deliver. Book did have quite a few drops though. I remember Golson scrambling out of pressure regularly and throwing dimes. Book seems to do the exact opposite when he scrambles right into pressure.

Have not been very impressed with Phil and I’ve seen him in the blue gold game play poorly but he has game time results and a big arm. Time to see if he is the answer for next year. Book doesn’t look as good as 50 other starting QBs in D1 CFB. Not sure he would start at many D2 schools. Did he (like Rees)really think they would see any real meaningful time? Book seized his opportunity early in his starting tenure then became afraid after teams figured his dink and doing passing out. Time for Book to wear the red hat and I’m not talking about the MAGA one.

He will need to post some surprising combine numbers to see a sixth round or better. I wish him luck since he is out of eligibility. He’s also a badass special teams player. Probably could have been a TE or DE if he wanted to.

I’m not sure why but our QB’s never seem to flourish under the current regime. I realize I’m preaching to the choir but what can really be expected? PJ will come in and have a lights out game/games and then regress like the rest. How many times has it happened already? The way the QB’s run the RPO is nauseating. Maybe the playbook is too complicated? Maybe the just make a play thought process is being over complicated because of an overly complex system. How could we strike out so many times with the way we’ve been able to recruit QB’s. None have ever truly developed and the only consistent is BK.

Book made awful reads and seems to on,y want to run when it’s off a less play. He had some openings to keep the ball but imo pussies out. I kept thinking we were going to go up tempo but never really did. I like 50/50balls to Claypool and McKinley. I can envision McKinley being better than Claypool next year. Stretch the field which means bye bye Book.

My biggest problem with Book is I don’t think his physical limitations are the issue. He can make all the throws we’re asking him to make. He just either doesn’t see them, understand the route concepts, go through his progressions, gets spooked by movement, etc.

There are just too many in-game examples of him not being able to execute the offense when there are plays to be made. And his unwillingness to throw over the middle is essentially rendering some of the playbook useless. Hard for Long to call an offense with a QB that in-game is refusing to do so.

Claypool? Nah. He's a 2nd/3rd round pick regardless of who throws him the ball at Notre Dame.

Boykin got drafted in the 3rd round, and has acquitted himself pretty well so far on Sundays. Claypool is significantly more athletic than Boykin and, like you said, offers quite a bit on special teams as well.

The trouble is that he and Kmet are our only two offensive skill position players who'll get drafted at all.

Jordan Johnson just liked a tweet saying bench Book and let Phil play. Paraphrasing, but that happened.

We already lost Amonra St. Brown due to BK's crappy QB play. Watch us lose another 5 star WR who doesn't want to come play in BK's dumpster fire of a passing game.

I think it has to be Jurkovec. Book shouldn't like it, and I have sympathy for any athlete that can't put it together. I think Book has always meant well, but he isn't producing. He has to understand as a captain that his play is hurting the team, and it wasn't just last night. The right thing to do is step down. He's had his chances. The way college football is these days, it has to be a quick adjustment. I'm not saying he couldn't earn his way back, but he's looking at the hill from the bottom at this moment in time.

EDIT: It's not Book's responsibility to step down. It's BK's responsibility to play Jurkovec. Period.

Book won’t be on the team when Johnson arrives. No need to worry about that.
