Which is fair. If a guy's not ready, I don't want to ruin his confidence and development.

In that same article, I don't remember hearing that Clark has an exceptional grasp of the pre-snap offense, either.

Let him play. Call a fairly simple gameplan for him. Dont ask a ton. He's a big athletic kid with a high high ceiling.

I can't decide which thing I'm going to hate more tomorrow: having to watch Ian Book piss his pants in the pocket again or listen to Doug Flutie. I guess I can at least mute Flutie.

I don't expect Phil to be better than Book. In fact I would expect him to be quite a bit worse. But the main thing is that he could be worse in a way that still helps the team.

We know what he isn't good at, but when defenses have to try and stop what he is good at, it will likely be in a way that helps our offense because they would likely have to keep players deeper than they are now, play soft coverage so they don't get beat over the top, and keep someone on Phil for the QB runs. All of that should make it easier to run the ball than it is now because we won't be facing a whole defense that is loading the box and pressuring guys at the line. It could also potentially open up some on those WR screen routes where we can better utilize the size of Claypool and the speed of Lenzy. And if teams would rather load the box and stop the run, all it takes is a couple deep balls for quick strike touchdowns and the game is already out of hand enough for it not to matter.

And I understand them saying Phil isn't ready because he can't read coverages. But there are ways to mitigate that, the simplest of which is probably just going fast with a check-with-me play calling. That system would likely also have the effect of putting us in advantageous mismatches because of the flexibility of guys like Kmet and Tremble. On top of that, we know Long calls a lot of plays that are designed to go to one guy, so there really shouldn't even be any reading of defenses on those play calls.

Is that true? Book has been doing exactly what he was told all this time. First read is covered? Take off. Fire Long!

When is the last time our offense ran like a well oiled machine? I honestly can’t remember, maybe the CW years? Chip Long has drawn interest to some degree from the King of coaching Mr. Saban. Maybe because he’s not at Bama and still with ND says something, idk. But I do know that even before Long, our offense has been questionable. So if he’s that bad, why hasn’t a change been demanded from the boss man himself? I know you all remember the complex defense from a few years back. How did that turn out? I’d say overall Long has done a good job. I think there’s a genuine softness about BK’s teams. I’m not saying they aren’t tough, hell look at QNelson, there’s a few here and there. But the mindset isn’t there and it shows. How many times have y’all been disappointed with a 4 and out on opening drives? I’m not just talking about the big games. The answer is too many times. This is a BK issue!!!

Every time we take this approach our offense is usually pretty fun to watch. The regression only occurs after they open up the playbook. I’m good with it just to watch something exciting happen. I do feel bad for the QB’s for what’s soon to transpire.

I've read a few articles that Long called a lot of designed runs, and even pushed Book to rumble when in doubt. My cousin said one of the paid services' pod cast suggested that Long was more afraid of 50/50 balls than Book.... I've heard BK is very hands on in the scripting, but then hear here that it's all Long's show. I've heard Book is responsible for a lot at the LOS (even from BK), and then hear it's very limited.

After all the crap I've read in different places, all the stuff I've been told, and all the stuff I've read hear, I'm thoroughly F'ing confused. It might be worth firing BK just to have more transparency.

I think Book needs to throw some interceptions in exchange for taking more risks and just not giving a fu*k ... If people are already casting him out, which he has to know, he needs to shake off the fear of failing and just play to win and not to lose. He has guts. He just needs to exhibit that confidence in his throws. He’s gonna make some mistakes. So what. Sling the ball, man.

I think he's been ruined. Not sure by who, but I'd say BK more than Long or Rees simply based on history. i could see Rees telling him to forget all the BS, and just sling the rock.

I just don't get it. Saban is far tougher on his QBs than Kelly is. Yet they succeed while Kelly's shrivel up like a dong at a polar bear club event.

Is Kelly giving them the Clockwork Orange eyeball treatment to these guys or something?

Saban demands excellence! Kelly demands physical practices only after getting whooped. How many coordinators has Saban had in Kellys 10 years? It’s frankly ridiculous, considering how they perform year in and year out. It’s not just talent, it’s coaching.

2015. The offense was borderline elite in 2015, ranking top 10 in most advanced stats. The 2015 team -- even with BVG -- would have gone undefeated against the schedule we played this year or last year. Only regular season losses were nailbiters on the road against top 5 teams, and bowl loss involved Jaylon getting hurt + playing a team with over a dozen 1st round draft picks.

You know one thing that’s always really irritated me was watching BK get blasted by the media about his purple faced sideline antics. So Saban doesn’t do the same? When he spanks a player on national television (slap on the butt) not much is made about it. Why? There are several coaches that have shamed themselves and others but you don’t still hear about them. I bet we’ve heard about it a half a dozen times this year! I think for fear of negative publicity BK has taken a different approach to coaching. Maybe for his own health, who knows. But, I think that it’s had a detrimental effect on all levels.

Hey listen, we gotta coach better. ~ Brian Kelly

At least he’s not in denial?

When you win bigtime, you get more respect. So for the mommas who see their babies getting yelled at by Saban, it’s known that he has the experience to get those babies to the promised land of championships and nfl teams at a distinguished success rate. This keeps the critics hushed. Notre Dame hasn’t won the chip in a 1000 years, so Kelly is just a prick. (He’s not, but perception is everything in this overly sensitive era we live in.)

Turnover Tommy!

Never have I enjoyed a mediocre QB quite like Tommy.

Yes, Mr. Lax, that was an outstanding season as I recall. With Clark Lea or Elko we probably seriously compete for a title. But we too had a lot of good players. DK led the way.

Eeehhhh. Up until Jalen Hurts, Saban had game managers at QB. Guys who wouldn’t cost his superior talented teams costly turnovers.

Yes, I agree, and though I’m personally over BK as being the one, I am sympathetic in that regard. Maybe it has taken the coach out of him.

LOL... I'm not sure if it's what they are asked to do (too much maybe), what they are afraid to do, or simply how they are being asked (personality). I mean we know Book can play better. We saw him come in and act fearless vs LSU in a very difficult situation. So strange...
