QB Recruiting

when do they decide if he will get a 5th year? Is that before NSD? ...

The Faculty Committee doesn't release the 5th Years until after NSD. At ND you request those that qualify academically can request a 5th Year providing the coach is offering a scholarship for that year. So there are two hurdles to clear. The coach and the Faculty Committee.

Several posters addressed the rest of your questions. From my perspective there's a lot of season left to play. One indicator will be who's the next man in, Crist reportedly the current backup or one of the others. If Hendrix or Golson came in next obviously the dynamics change. If Crist comes off the bench and produces like his 5 Star creditentials, the dynamics change. If Rees continues to struggle with turnovers ...

From the way recruiting has gone to date, I don't expect a QB in this class just for the sake of a body. Somebody they really like that opted elsewhere could change his mind. It happens. But I wouldn't bet on at this point. Five months left in recruiting. Lots can happen. Meanwhile there are a number of 2013 prospects being pursued.

I will try to answer as best as possible, let's say Crist does not apply for his 5th year and transfers somewhere else to get a shot. That leaves Rees as the proven starter, Hendrix as the viable backup and Golson as the "QB of the future". Let's not forget Massa came in as a QB and he could be the emergency guy, like Goodman was at one point.

I don't know if it is a must to get a QB this cycle, but if Kelly feels he needs to then so be it. I think things will all work out though.

There's always Baratti in extreme emergency.

Let's imagine that Rees plays out this year as the starter and Crist goes into the sunset next year. There would seem to be little incentive for either Henricks or Golson to transfer, as they would have to see golden opportunity to win the job. Therefore we have three QBs in stable, probably all of whom will be able to run the offense. As others have said, if you're catastrophically desperate and getting down to your FOURTH QB, you're screwed anyway, but Massa or Baratti could be trained up in the weeks before it got to that last-man-standing [in most realities three guys aren't going to be hurt in the same week].

So, if Rees gets so funky that Coach goes back to Crist, then you have the same situation next year with Dayne returning, even if say Hendricks get frustrated and transfers.

The following year, Crist is gone but Alviti comes in to join at least Rees and Golson [now experienced graybeards], and that is not to say that Andrew won't still be there, nor that Kelly won't verbal/commit two QBs in Alviti's class.

Coach has a great amount of juggling to do with all this. I believe that his behavior this recruiting season shows that he believes that his least risky, most pay-off path was to go really elite [Kiel] or let it go and strengthen the D further, and RB, WR, OL etc with blue chips.

I credit myself with absolutely NO insight on this as it seems dead obvious.

Looks like we are not taking a qb this class unless Kiel changes his mind or Kelly does.

I doubt if Kiel changes his mind after seeing North Texas Mean Green whip up on the Loosiers this past weekend! He!!, he's bound to be their starter next year, even though jsut being a freshman! That compared to more than likely sitting behind the current Irish QB's for at least a couple (possibly several) years!

Can we please speak plain English and stop all the street-gang talk. It's neither sheik or intellectually honest to be an ***.

We would be in a precarious position if Crist decided not to come back for a 5th, or wasn't provided an opportunity to do so combined w a Hendrix transfer. I'm not suggesting that this scenario plays itself out, just that it would create some real depth concerns if it did. Couple that scenario with an injury to one of the remaining 2 QB's and we'd have a real problem. Here's hoping this doesn't come to fruition and Rees, Crist, Golson and Hendrix have a healthy (pun intended) competition for the position next year.

I hope Andrew stays, I really like what that kid has to offer. He has a nice, quick release. Not as quick as Tommy's. But, stronger and he can run the crap out of it.

I just want a qb to be able to run and throw in this offense.

exactly my thoughts.. it's a long shot, but not out of the realm of possibility

No way Andrew transfers if Crist leaves.... That puts him 2 or 3 on the depth chart with a real chance to win the job... You don't come to ND and then leave before having a real chance to win the job

I disagree. Why would Hendrix stay? This guy could transfer to a MAC and actually play. He's burning eligibility right now especially if Crist stays a 5th year. This guy has a higher ceiling then Rees and could quite possibly never be able to showcase his talents. I would really like to see what this kid can actually do.

He's essentially a redshirt freshman. You're acting like his career is coming to a close.

I'm just saying if Crist stays a 5th year my assumption is that Hendrix will still be number 3/4 on the depth chart. Yet another year of eligibilty burned. Just an assumption. How much longer will he wait? That's a question only he can answer. I hope he's here for the long haul.

Are we not pursuing any QB's right now? Haven't seen an update on a QB in a long time in the '12 Recruiting Threads. Just curious, given our current situation.

why does Brian kelly not recruit qb's when weis was here we questioned him about a lot of things. but he always recruited good qb's here we have recruiting season goin on and ND isn't in on any of the top qb's

No he's recruiting QB's, just looking for the right one. Losing out on Kiel and Mauk means there won't be a QB coming on this cycle. But with as much as people bitch about Rees and Crist being low ceiling guys and not really being right for the spread and so on and so forth, do you want Kelly to
A.) Get a guy that wouldn't fit the spread
B.) Get a guy that's 3 star(cause we know how much the star rating means to people)

So really you can't have it both ways.
