On The Mark: Week 2 - ESPN

Well, in the Play Clock Violation thread I said how it was nice that ESPN wasn't going ballistic on ND with their usual crazy talk. Well, maybe an hour after I said that, we get this great piece of work.

Actually the guy says this:

The verdict: Notre Dame is too good on offense -- and Kelly is too good of a coach -- for its season to collapse. As long as they win one of their next three games and win the games they're supposed to win down the stretch, Kelly's first season will end with the Irish playing in a bowl game.

Which isn't too bad IMO. At least he thinks there is light at the end of the tunnel. He's probably right about ND nation in panic mode.

They are still listed in the article, with BK one of two pictures on the front. It is obviously to get clicks, but I don't think they'd be in there for no reason.

The one picture is Butch Jones the new coach at Cincy. Looks kind of like Kelly though.

Yeah, I don't expect ND to get good media coverage after the last two weeks. But at least they aren't getting totally blasted. It might get pretty bad though if we don't start winning in the next few weeks.

Didn't find anything wrong with the write up. We were in it until the end the past 2 games. The "Verdict" seems accurate. Not pushing the panic button yet, but some of my morale is gone. Maybe my 9-3 prediction needs some reevaluation.

BK is featured on the front of the college football page, to initially get into the article is what mgriff was talking about.

but i agree its not a bad article on NDs part

Spot on IMO. Look around the message board for five minutes and you will see Chicken Little signed on under a hundred different names. Kelly has positive rep and ND fans do not. Look for ESPN to beat that drum quite a bit.

Uh, oh. Who will be first to lay the wood on my for saying ND fans have negative rep? I don't mean from a drunken beligerent A-hole perspective but from an knee jerk, sense of entitlement perspective.

I had big expectations too. But maybe now 7 wins would be a pretty successful season and try to get a bowl win.

Stanford will be the difference b/w 8 or 9 wins this year. 3-1 vs. BC, Pitt, Utah and USC!! We will NOT lose to patsies while BK is at the helm.

on a side note ESPN has ND ranked as only the 10th best Non AQ team.

even though i feel ND could beat at least 7-8 of the teams above them

ND fans are notorious for being whiny and panic-stricken. The Rivals board has a meltdown each week. I'm taking these things in stride. We looked better each week. Look how many OLB's Kelly is recruiting. He knows that is a weakness for us, and they'll work on it throughout the season. I am reassured by the fact that we are learning how to wrap up on our tackles, and the fact that we can run the ball again. This is a process, it will take more than 3 games.

If anyone noticed, I had no expectations and refused to give a prediction of our record. I have never seen people whine this much on this board before. Calm down people.

I tend to agree...no losses to NAVY etc.

I thought the article was fair...

You can see it...its like a big motor thats out of time some...you get glimpses of what it is, and when its repaired...look out.

Folks need to remember that CWs team was operating at its peak...they were his guys on O and D (and seriously, can you do better than JC,GT,MF, AA, and KR...and D, well it sucked since 06, and wasn't getting better)...CW wasn't getting any better...yup, BK and co are achiving near misses just like CW...but as the scouts say, BK still has a ton of upside. I think even ESPN sees that.

We are going to win some games...we are going to compete with SC...yup our record will be sub 10 wins...folks need to enjoy watching the shock when one or two of these unlucky foes you listed is on the receiving end when the cylinders are firing in time the entire game...2-3 touchdown win for us.

I like Jim Harbaugh, but I also love to see his "bitter beer face"...Hope its them

If it seems like I am complaining about anything, I'm not and that was not the impression I was going for. While admittedly the article is fair, ESPN still put BK on the front page of the article, and included ND just to get clicks. The headline reads "A Call to Alarms" with a dejected looking BK. I said 8-4, 9-3 at the beginning of the season. That is looking less and less likely, but I think I've been one of the most realistic people with my expectations. I haven't blown up and said we are doomed, and I haven't said that we were going to the BCS. It's year one, and while everyone wants impressive progress, a new offense and a new defense coupled with an entirely new coaching staff does not lend itself to a BCS type season. There are growing pains expected, but there are also certain things I question. In the end, we can only wait and see.

Hahahahahah... I am not the most optimistic person, but lets be real. It's three games into a NEW ERA!... This man knows what he is doing, ND WILL BE FINE !

..........Especially when we get those new studs on campus!

Dude, I agree. But the meltdowns come from a feeling of helplessness. Like, we seemed so close to winning (who wasn't popping the cork when we thought Michigan State's kicker was going to have to make a 49 yard field goal to tie the game) and then...pop goes the balloon. People go crazy when they lose something they think they already had.

And ND fans have had a lot of reasons to go crazy lately... The good news is that if this team gets one touchdown better, either on defense or offense, it is elite. And with gradual improvements as key guys learn the system and projected drastic improvements when key recruits start stepping up...elite is not too much to hope for our near future.

There are some people who post extremely regularly on this board that are constantly negativists. They doubtless view themselves as the only realists. They however know no more of what they're talking about as regards the future than we optimists do. Also, I find the optimists' views more interesting to read than the negativists. The negativists speak largely of the past, often the past of different coaching regimes and systems, which are almost irrelevant to our discussions. The optimists include some starry-eyed happy folks, but also the majority of the posters who take a longer view and try to analyze what actually is happening from a strengths and weaknesses point-of-view. Whenever I'm reading a post composed largely of anger, cynicism, or hysteria, I have my doubts as to whether it's adding anything to my understanding of Notre Dame football. AND, I have a suspicion that there are one or two jerks on the board who post their cynical crap just to get a rise out of others. There are a few posters who have begun to offer me little or no insight about anything, and I've begun to just skip over their "contributions". I suggest that if they're bothering anybody that you do too. [until they actually have something to say]. And to reassert my unwavering faith: I believe that this team has a good coaching staff, an array of pretty good players struggling with a lot of new detailed learning, and a fair amount of positive play to show for it. The trend of all this is up.

As delusional as I am, I have never once thought my yelling in my house 1000 miles from where a game is taking place had any impact what-so-ever on the final out come. Of course the time I bounced an orange to goose the ref from forty rows up was the closest I ever came to having any impact on the game. That still doesn't keep me from going horse in the process of cheering on my Irish!

Great point about how close we are to being a top 10 team. Eliminating about half a dozen mistakes throughout a game gets us there.

many of these folks need Mr. Aaron Lynch to bring the pain on them!

Dude, forget Aaron... I have a feeling that all it would take is one glance from Mama Lynch to shut up all the keyboard heroes.

I said (in another forum), that the true test for this team was how they would respond to the scUM loss. IMO, they responded admirably. I'm seeing improvements every week. I was extremely pi$$ed off after the Mich. St. loss, but after some reflection, I realized that this team is getting better and better. Of course, there are things that need improvement. If I can see these things, you can bet your a$$ that Kelly also sees them.

Patience, my friends. Brighter days are still to come.

That's the curse of being a fan. It's completely irrational, you have no control over the outcome, and yet you care deeply about it. That's why it doesn't really bother me when people go crazy here, because it's just a way of trying to feel like you're in control of something that you really aren't.

Come Saturday, I guarantee you that 95% of the skeptics will be screaming at their TVs just as loudly as the Kelly Fanatics. We love ND. It is our curse, it is our joy.

Improvement!! 92 yards!! That's what we had in rushing, the coaching staff abandon the run. That is unacceptable!
