The short, simple answer is that the party has moved waaaaaayyyyyy left hard and fast in the past 15-20 years.

Pushing Biden out for Kamala this year, my guess, will prove to be as big a mistake as Hillary was in 2016.
The mistake wasn't pushing Biden out, it was desperately clinging to Biden and dishonest coverage over his mental and physical health over the past 4+ years that allowed Democrats to pull the wool over the eyes of their electorate and trick them into not putting up a real primary this year

80 years old with dementia. Pull up Trump clips from 2016 vs now... not even the same person.

Even if they are sharp as a tack, no one should be able to serve in the House, Senate or as President if they are over 70. You never know with each person when their decline will start and how rapid it will be.

Yeah, in addition to that, here's what Trump is doing:

It's weird that there is radio silence on a guy that is nearly 80 flailing about in his public appearances, slurring his speech, losing his train of thought, etc.

No need to do anything big when Kamala is struggling as bad as she is. He's done enough press in the last decade I don't think he's gonna change any minds.

Before anyone says she's doing fine, she is not. She's in a tossup with an old former president with bad favorables. Donald Trump was so unlikable that voters elected a guy out of a memory care unit to replace him.

She got a bump by virtue of not being Joe Biden. I think Donald is gonna win but both parties have no one to blame but themselves if their candidate loses.

I will say this about Trump, I still think he's cognitively fine (for his age) and I swear to God he's gonna live to be like 104.

His problems are basically the following:

1) His narcissism knows no bounds.

2) His acquisition of knowledge stopped somewhere around 1987.

3) There are about 6 people left in the campaign helping him.

4) Harris is harder to get everyone to hate.

You can only go so far in a campaign calling your opponent stupid and telling everyone immigrants are killing entire communities. His mind just isn't set up to win this type of battle like it was in 2015, but it's largely because many external things have changed around him.
1-3 also describes the Chairman of the Chicago White Sox.

The ABC correspondent who was there seemed to think it was normal. I haven’t watched more than a couple of clips of it and thought it was a weird move, but it might not have been so odd I guess. It’s not like this is coming from Fox News

The guy has been all over the place doing online interviews. Just like Kamala did Call her Daddy and Stern, etc. Trump has been doing Flagrant, Bussin', Full Send, Shawn Ryan, Dave Ramsey, etc. Seems like regular old Trump to me. The TH music thing seemed weird, but all of his long form stuff seems totally "normal" relative to Trump speak.

It's rumored that Rogan is having Kamala and Trump on at different times soon. I think that would be epic for both candidates, although I can't imagine it'll be a full 3-hour normal time frame. Flagrant got 90 minutes with Trump and that was shocking.

I don't think you understand how fucking ecstatic I would be for Trump to magically drop out and I get to vote for JD Vance to be the next President.
JD Vance without Trump and his baggage and far right talking points probably wins pretty easily. Probably one of my favorite Republicans prior to 2022

Take it to the Boys of Summer thread. We're discussing the possible end of the United States as we know it.

There were a bunch contemporaneous tweets on it that say it's anything other than normal, it's not just from Kamala HQ. He had a multiple people pass out in the audience, presumably because of heat, and then said he didn't want to take any more questions, and then just stood there up on stage for 39 minutes playing a few songs on repeat with everyone confused as to what was going on.

I get that sentiment but I don't think that's actually the case and you're example of Hilary in 2016 proves it. They had a much further left candidate. But the party went with Hillary. That rubbed a lot of the Bernie bros wrong. And really soured any independents they may have courted like myself (not for political beliefs, but for how the DNC handled that whole process). And this year they pulled strings in an even worse way, by giving the nomination to Kamala.

I think both parties going into 2016 were both without an identity and established leadership. Trump manage to capitalize on that but no one on left did. Then DNC went and gave us Harris, thinking that's what people wanted. But the leadership on the left is so out of touch with reality and now we're stuck with this shit show. We've allowed the loud vocal minority of each side too much of a platform because they make for good entertainment, but they're all idiots and we're paying for it as country. We need strong leadership from some more central candidates from both party, or the country is only going to continue to get worse, regardless of who wins.
Hillary won the 2016 primary because of her last name. The DNC also realized in 2016 that America wasn't ready for a full blown, self proclaimed socialist as president.

Would seem callous to keep speaking or take questions while people are being attended to.

Harris continues to have very good polling numbers that reversed the Biden losses, has more than doubled Trump in fundraising, has twice as much cash on hand, kicked Trump's ass in the debate, and now we've moved from criticisms of 'no interviews' to interviewing on Fox News being a desperate move.

Yes, it hasn't been a super memorable campaign historically speaking but arguably this has been a wise campaign all things considered. Even given the differences in how Harris vs. Trump are judged (massively!) I don't think many expected Harris to be doing this well. Trump hasn't had any momentum since she came on.
Trump somehow wasn’t ready for her. We all knew Biden wouldn’t be on the final ticket. Not being Biden and having a full court press from the media has boosted her tremendously. She’s desperate now if she’s doing Fox

I'm not disagreeing with that in the slightest, only stating the party as a whole hadn't moved as far left over 20 years like you stated. And I was using that as evidence. They had an opportunity to move much further left and didn't.

I'm curious what people's level of "give a shit" is about this election. Not who you're voting for, but how much you care who wins.

I follow several betting lines on the election. Late September they all had Harris to win around 52%. Today it's Trump at 57% to win, and that number has been steadily climbing.
