I think we agree! Maryland isn't a program-defining game, but it shouldn't be discounted as a part of the process. If we had lost or even let them hang, it would have shown that maybe we aren't making the progress it looked like we were making. That we soundly took care of Maryland is a measure, however small, that we're still moving in the right direction. It's nowhere to stop and be contented, but it's a recognizable stop on our way to our destination. In any case, I think we understand one another.

Yeah, awesome. Just a random thought I had about progress, as long as we're having a discussion on it...I'm just as guilty of this as anyone, but I don't think it's as linear as we like to make it out to be. For example, if we have more trouble beating Navy or beat Michigan next year, I don't think it necessarily means we're regressing or progressing, respectively.

So how do you think we exactly measure progress? It's just one game, and there's a reason you play it out on the field- do you let one game dictate how you view the entire program?

"Dan fox takes horrible angles."

Could not agree more, my question, is who is a worse LB, Calabrese or Fox???

There's no way Fox takes worse angles than Zeke Motta. Zeke might as well run the opposite direction of the ball carrier.

Hey genius Jayhawk, who said negativism wasn't a word? They're both words but they're not synonyms in the context that he used it (positive/negative). Look up the definition first before making a fool of yourself.

You didn't provide the sentence. So, I apologize for jumping to that conclusion. I tried to retract and remove my part of the vitriol.

On the substance of the debate, I think both sides have a point. You're right, Maryland is bad. This should be taken with a grain of salt. We've also lost this type of game in the past. Therefore, we see some progress.

I think people just wanted to spend a bit of time enjoying another easy win...that's four this year. Kind of fun.

Peace.

...WAY too much testosterone. If we could tap that and hand it to Kelly, we'd never start slow again. Of course our own guys would be trying to punch each other out.

I understand, but I've asked this question and have yet to receive a straight answer. What did we learn from beating Maryland that already didn't know?

That Michael Floyd is capable of dropping a couple of balls.

I'd be lying if I said I read every post in this thread, but I just want to throw a couple thoughts out into this discussion (I'm not totally sure where they fit, so I'm not making them in response to any particular post)

1. There is a certain type of pundit, exemplified in the sports media by guys like Michael Felger, that recognizes how embarrassing unadulterated homerism is and, in an attempt to avoid ever being considered a homer and demonstrate their objectivity, totally overcompensate and become unbearably contrarian. This annoys people. Nobody hates senseless homerism more than I do, but sometimes I feel like the positions taken by the Michael Felgers on this board (like, for instance, the idea that ND is not a legit top-25 team) are so consumed with guarding against homerism that they exhibit an inability to be objective themselves.

2. Certainly, beating Maryland is not the highlight of anybody's season. They aren't good. And did we learn anything we didn't know before as a result of beating a not-good Maryland team? No, probably not. But that seems to imply that any time we don't beat a top team and nothing happens in the game that teaches us something new about the team, the whole endeavor was a waste of time. And I disagree with that idea. From the that perspective, we are not allowed to analyze the game. Because if you win by a lot, there are probably some positives to discuss. That they came against an inferior team doesn't make them less good. They still happened. Winning itself is important. It feels good to win. And when you are supposed to win big and you do, it reconfirms that your team is what you thought it was. Many, many teams have failed to do that. People should be allowed to discuss positives after the game, even if the opponent was bad.

3. J Pham, you should post more, man. Agree with all of your stuff and your perspective on what should go on here.

"Notre Dame has made a habit of playing one "home" game a year at a neutral site. Although this one was held at a stadium only 12 miles from the Maryland campus, both end zones read Notre Dame and most fans in the crowd of 70,251 at FedEx Field were pulling for the Irish."
From the warm confines of my living room, it did not look like 70k people in attendance.
