I missed the first half so didn’t see the shit show of a 1Q it sounds like… here’s my takes
-Idk what the answer is at QB, but it’s not solely Coan that’s for sure. In 2009, Kelly at Cincy had Tony Pike and Zach Collaros at QB with Collaros being more of a runner, but he really went with the hot hand. I think that’s what needs to be done here.
-It felt like ND was playing the refs tonight more than VT.
-Williams is such a warrior
-Logan Diggs is going to be VERY good. He is so patient, and then has a sick burst. The builds are obviously very different, but the style is so similar to Leveon Bell
-Austin’s 2 PT conversion catch was insane
-Can’t understate how much missing Mayer could have effected both Coan and Buchner. That’s ole reliable.
-Foskey is such a beast and better be a first round pick.
-The defense is getting there. They look so dominant at times, and then they have a head scratching plays like that last TD.
-I think most the remaining defenses are in line with VT or worse. Hopefully the run game can really get going.

QB should be Coan/Buchner with TB12 having an increased workload. Steadily give Buchner more reps as the season progresses.

I have been saying this since the FSU game. When Coan is in at QB the offense needs to be uptempo, 2 minute type offense. He gets the call out quick and looks good.

This was as ugly as a win gets but it was a win.
The tackling has to get better on defense.
Freeman needs to lose the 3 down lineman section of the play book.
Williams never stops.
Kevin Austin catch was amazing.
TB grew up tonight but the coaching staff let him
down. He needed more live throws before tonight in th either games and that caused him
some issues tonight.
Our coaching is not very good right now and that needs to get fixed quickly.
Hopefully Chris is ok.

The good from this game is we all should be getting a fruit basket from the VT alum. This is probably the game that will get Justin Fuente fired after they go into an inevitable death spiral after such a crushing loss and finish 6-6.

This was literally the worst officiating I have seen in a Notre Dame game. I’m not exaggerating.

That was a great game!
Coaches are doing exactly what everyone here called for: Let Tyler play even if it costs the team wins.
Not starting him was the right call because he showed starting the second half that the moment was too big.
But he got some great experience and hopefully learns from these mistakes.
He's surprising inaccurate on the short throws.
When Bracy had the pick, I thought the game was over especially when their quarterback got his shoulder separated.

You spend the next 2 weeks working Buchner with starter practice reps. Start him and only use Coan or Pyne if needed. Ala 2012 with Golson and Rees.
OL was better tonight. Some of that is Buchner makes them look better but, at first glance, I think Alt and Kristofic are some answers. Kristofic has been on the roster the whole time, just sayin.
Nice to see Austin bounce back with some huge plays. I know he’s inconsistent but I really don’t see how any questions him being an NFL’er. I’d love it if the Cowboys drafted him in the 5th round.
Defense isn’t consistent enough at the little things. I hate the dollar defense and I still hate that our best pass rusher plays so much WILL LB. He’s literally in the process of having one of the best pass rushing stretches we’ve seen under Kelly and he spends far too much time, not doing that. Or, doing that from 1-2 steps deeper than he should.
The defense feels like a battle between what we do best and what Freeman wants to do long term. I’m reasonably concerned this is just who he is. I feel like I’m going to be always wanting Lea the coach while loving Freeman the recruiter. It will just come down to whether Freeman can get the guys to take us to another level because I’m not sure his coaching will. Or, I’m at least more skeptical than before.
I like what they did with the CB’s. I like that they gave Bracy the start and he came up with a huge INT. I like that they sat Hart for that pathetic attempt at a tackle. He probably needed a breather. Guys needs rest but guys also need to be aware that these pathetic attempts at tackles or blocks or whatever gets you on the bench. For as mentally tough as this team has to be to win this game. There are enough mental lapses to make this game as close as it was.
Happy with the win while finding myself disappointed is so much else.

Just watched the replay and was able to calmly assess:
1) redemption for Austin. Well at least partial.
2) running game was excellent with TB in there.
3) TB played well but I think he can run even better and pass better as well. The two bad ints came with freshman who were out of position.
4) Coan was a class act. Poor pYne though.
5) Rees called a decent game
6) Kyren is da man
7) not having Meyer was huge but good experience for backups.
8) Lenzy making some plays
9) Xavier Watts in special teams looks good. He could be starting sooner than we think.
10) usc looking terrible and hopefully we can break their spirits early. The Oline with TB or Coan in hurry up doesn’t look half bad.
The Bad:
1)Defense looked like crap and don’t think Freeman is a defensive genius.
2) we got screwed repeatedly by refs
3) getting lost in the ACC network is BS!
4) tackling and DBs looked bad.
5) we don’t like mobile QBs

Seems like "the backup QB is every ND fan's favorite player" meme has manifested into an actual curse. Coan starts and therefore sucks. Buchner comes off the bench and looks great in the first half. Then his backup QB mojo wore off over half time, so he starts to struggle. But Coan is now the backup, and looks like Tom f*cking Brady running a 2m drill.
The way forward is clear. You start Coan to run the scripted first drive. Then immediately bench him for Buchner. Pyne starts the 2nd half, but then you bring in Coan again to close out the game.
If you have two QBs, you have none. But if you have three QBs, they apparently morph into some weird VOLTRON thing that wins you a lot of ugly football games.
