BK is steaming as he should be , he's pissed with Drues play, the refs sucked and he pretty much is not sugar coating it. I like to see this

1. I'd be surprised if Brian VanGorder makes it through the whole season.

2. DeShone Kizer is the real deal. 15/24, 215 yds, 5 TDs, 0 INTs. 13 carries for 77 yards and 1 TD

3. For all of the defensive failure, the defense did play well in spots.... In the 3rd Q, Texas had 5 drives......... 3 of those were 3 and outs. And there was a Texas drive of 4 plays for -3 yards in the 4Q. It's just maddening that that same defense looked like they couldn't tackle a peewee RB, in the OT.

4. 8 penalties for 64 yards is not horrible, but that's gotta get cleaned up as well.

5. Folston looks a little slower and not as quick as he was, pre-injury. But he is still a very good back.

6. The targeting non-call was textbook targeting.......... it wasn't mean or dirty or a cheap shot; but it was targeting.

7. It's going to be a long, stressful year....... but there will probably be more ups than downs.

My game ball goes to DeShone Kizer, and it ain't even close.

The only thing I'd add is...the tackling is pretty poor overall, but the Dbacks are really bad. When you hit someone, what does it take to hang on?? a little bit of technique, and then DESIRE, HEART, REFUSAL TO LOSE ! It isn't there. As well the Dbacks are pretty bad in coverage, particularly the corners...coverage is a skill I think it is clear ND is not developing. I think it is time to go get someone from the Gary Patterson tree, and start to get MORE out of a defense than the stars indicate...this 4 stars playing like 2 stars is done...has to be.

I said at one point this defense is like ground hog day, I'd like to amend that to add that BVG isn't figuring out Andie MacDowell anytime soon either.

Highlight from the presser for me was prolly Kelly saying we were in COVER 3 when we got beat deep. How in the ever loving fuck do we get beat deep in COVER 3?

I was thinking the same. That, and Kelly wasn't sugar coating the targeting no-call

Question in the targeting? What's the process in CFB for a TD reception. Torii landed with 2 feet prior to the ball being dislodged.

Safeties fucked up. That's one reason Drew sat the second half. You can tell Kelly was not happy with safety play and BVG.

We are going to see a lot of Eliot and Studstill going forward at safety.

Nick Coleman will not see the field at corner for the rest of the year. Love has passed him. Nick Watkins can't get back on the field soon enough.

A loss in double overtime to potentially a top 25 team on the road first week of the season does not kill playoff chance.

If they win out, which I don't think they will, the team will make he playoffs.

I'm thinking more of a 9-3 season though.

Defense was poor from an individual standpoint sans a few, a scheme stand point, and fundamentally (such poor tackling).

Offense is as expected. Manufacture points. Oline still (and always will be) better at pass pro than run blocking.

It's too bad we didn't get to see the offense with a whole camp of Kizer getting 1 reps. Might have put up 60.

Overall tackling, D scheme, poor offensive coaching decisions cost us this one.

Team goes 9-3 and is shopping for DC and TE coach.

Really like future potential of alot of these young guys.

The last 3 games should have Van Gorder Fired right away. Brian Kelly is at fault as well for hiring him. But, Look at the last 3 games.

Choked major league against Stanford, and lost the game at the end because of Defense falling apart as they marked down the field in seconds to win.

Got BLASTED against Ohio State, looked utterly unprepared.

Got blasted by freshman QB and a weak overall QB in Swoopes.

BAD BAD BAD

We are who we are and we are stuck with BVG because BK won't admit he made a mistake hiring him.

We are absolutely stuck with him.

Offensively we're as good or better than we've ever been, even when Charlie was calling the shots. The only position we could use more production from is TE, Booker should go. Defensively it's a dumpster fire and needs fixed asap. Three straight losses, and the defense was highly to blame in each of them...especially tonight.

This is definitely on BVG at this point, but what about Lyght? Is the Safety play on him a bit too?

Shit I didn't want to acknowledge because I love Lyght but he coaches the DBs.

Without significantly improving our defensive talent this program won't be a consistent title contender under Brian Kelly. A shame because the talent on offense when healthy and including Alize is some of the best in the country

Everybody coaching on the defensive side of the ball is suspect...no one tackled all that well. The dbacks were an embarrassment. I still struggle to believe 4 star kids lose athleticism. So whats left? Scheme and Technique...technique matters for shit when you play a step slower than you did as a high school senior... There is something wrong on the back end of this defense...very wrong.

Not-so-random thoughts:

- Kizer was amazing tonight and deserved a better outcome. I feel bad for Zaire being Wally Pipped, but Kizer is clearly above him. We may as well enjoy him this year - he's likely a 1st round pick in the upcoming draft.

- It was a fun game to watch if you had no rooting interest. Too bad we all did.

- Most of the blame will go to BVG for this atrocity of a defense, and I do think he should shoulder much of that blame. However, it's year 7 (YEAR SEVEN!) and ND still has nothing resembling a defense. At what point should Brian Kelly start shouldering the blame for the year in and year out trainwreck that is the ND defense? His ND teams are nearly identical to his Cincy teams - good offense, pathetic defenses, hope to win shootouts. I'm sick of watching this, personally.

- The season just got much less fun, as ND's playoff chances are toast, short of an extremely unlikely 11 game win streak to finish the season. Their QB is likely gone after this season too. I don't know... just isn't as intriguing to me at this point. I'll still watch, but there will be little to no emotional investment.

- I really hated Kelly going uber conservative and running on 3rd and 12 with 3 minutes left. Fucking lame.

- I hated him not going for two in OT even more. Everyone watching this game knew the defense couldn't get a stop. ND's only non-turnover shot at winning in OT was going for two. I understand that it was conventional to kick the extra point, but the best chance to win was going for 2.

- Hope Hunter is okay. He took a vicious hit. The play should have been reviewed for targeting.

- Hate to say that the season is over after week 1, but if making the playoff was your goal, it's essentially over. This team is a mess.

Could not agree anymore with your post. I am absolutely sickened at this result. I am more sickened than the BushPush fiasco. And the reason is that Texas honestly didnt deserve to even be in the game with us. If it wasnt for the absolutely horrendous playcalling by Kelly and switching QBs at the worst possible time, combined with BVG's inability to understand what football is, we win by 3 touchdowns.
Kizer was the man. Unreal showing by him in only about 2 1/2 quarters worth of play.
Its really sad our season is over Week 1...people are going to absolutely tear apart our D, and we can't score 47/game.
Thank God I just got a new job that forces me to work Saturdays...I dont think I could put up with this shit all season.
P.S.- I am sick to my stomach that we made 'Kelly-Weis Contract #2'. We have to deal with this shit for 6 more years??!!!?

Why, because we destroyed them last year?
This is 2016, and Texas played very well tonight. They were beatable, but we really dropped the ball on defense. Credit the Longhorns though, they came to play. They were an improved team.

Tevon coney was especially bad tonight if I'm gonna name one name. I thought the DL held up pretty solid. No pass rush of course but there weren't that many huge holes. Honestly thought the LBs were in generally good position to make plays too. The big issue was missed tackles and Inability to not get dragged for extra yards. D'Onta Foreman is a truck at 6'1" 260 and we won't face someone near as big as him the rest of the season which gives me some hope.

Has nothing to do with last year. If we played Defense to the level of a high school team we would've beaten Texas tonight. If our coach didn't keep running the same play 40 times to become the most predictable team in the country, we would've won. If he could realize how much better Kizer is than Zaire we win. I can keep going. It's not difficult to see.

Both QBs played very well in camp, it was the sensible thing to play both. We'll see Zaire again this season, I'll bet you. Unfortunately our running game really struggled outside of Folston's big run and Kizer's designed carries, and that did not bode well for Zaire under center. All in all, he didn't play terribly, the game just favored Kizer given what Texas was doing defensively. We're going to need to run the ball better than we did tonight if we want to win.

I love ND, I am a ND Grad. But, honestly look at it---if you were a top talent kid would you come to this dumpster fire defense? Seriously look at it from non-shamrock colored glasses. Do you want to play for Van Gorder? Is he really going to make you look better. We sell the 40 year plan, the golden degree, the history, etc. But, other programs negatively recruit against us. They say look at their defense, look at what happens to ND in the big games--got run over by Bama, got toasted by OSU, blew it against Florida State---but, we beat Rutgers, Miami, and and LSU. 3-2 and got shi* Canned against real good teams.

Something has to change. And watching today, nothing has changed. No pass rush, couldn't stop them in pressure situations, and defense choked once again.

7 years and the trend is the same. Sad, sad, sad. I think BK is very good. But, the same mistakes happen over and over and over.

Honestly, I'm not sure much would have changed if our pass rush was even better than it was. Buchele was often getting the ball out of his hands quickly. It's not like he had all day in the pocket, he was taking quick drops and letting it fly. I'm curious why we don't try to jam receivers at the line more often and disrupt routes. It would help buy time for our pass rush as well. On one of Burt's big TDs we had tight coverage on him, but at no point did the corner try to slow him down...he just turned and ran with him, trying to keep up with a track star. Does not compute...I agree that the defense blew it though.

BK says they were in cover 3. So, they weren't ready. What in the heck have they done all off season if they don't know how to play cover 3. Crazy bad. So, turning an running was a mistake. Just stupid. Things have to change, better prepared. We are 0-3 in our last 3 games and the same mistakes are happening. Trouble with a mobile QB, trouble with the long pass, trouble pass rushing, trouble up the middle. Same old problems with different players. So, a BVG and BK issue. Our D is no better than when BK took over. That is the issue. I understand new players and what not, but hire a competent coach then. BVG is obviously not preparing them. Same problems every year with him. That is 100% on BK, he hired him and has kept him. He isn't helping on the field or in recruiting, why is he still here?

You realize that the defense was actually really solid under Diaco, right? Kelly had improved the defense tremendously from the Weis Era... But yeah, bvg has caused that all to change.
