Post Game Observations (Texas '16)

Post Game Observations (Texas '16)

1. I'd be surprised if Brian VanGorder makes it through the whole season.

2. DeShone Kizer is the real deal. 15/24, 215 yds, 5 TDs, 0 INTs. 13 carries for 77 yards and 1 TD

3. For all of the defensive failure, the defense did play well in spots.... In the 3rd Q, Texas had 5 drives......... 3 of those were 3 and outs. And there was a Texas drive of 4 plays for -3 yards in the 4Q. It's just maddening that that same defense looked like they couldn't tackle a peewee RB, in the OT.

4. 8 penalties for 64 yards is not horrible, but that's gotta get cleaned up as well.

5. Folston looks a little slower and not as quick as he was, pre-injury. But he is still a very good back.

6. The targeting non-call was textbook targeting.......... it wasn't mean or dirty or a cheap shot; but it was targeting.

7. It's going to be a long, stressful year....... but there will probably be more ups than downs.

My game ball goes to DeShone Kizer, and it ain't even close.

Agree in full. It just seems to be the script for the last two years. ND goes down big, comes back, and then doesn't have enough to finish the game. BVG needs to fucking go. Fuck him.

I don't understand the play calling after the score was tied at 37. Draw play on 3rd and 12, with Kizer playing as well as he was at that time. Should have stepped on them and they let them up. Plenty of time to move down the field, score and avoid OT altogether.

Not-so-random thoughts:

- Kizer was amazing tonight and deserved a better outcome. I feel bad for Zaire being Wally Pipped, but Kizer is clearly above him. We may as well enjoy him this year - he's likely a 1st round pick in the upcoming draft.

- It was a fun game to watch if you had no rooting interest. Too bad we all did.

- Most of the blame will go to BVG for this atrocity of a defense, and I do think he should shoulder much of that blame. However, it's year 7 (YEAR SEVEN!) and ND still has nothing resembling a defense. At what point should Brian Kelly start shouldering the blame for the year in and year out trainwreck that is the ND defense? His ND teams are nearly identical to his Cincy teams - good offense, pathetic defenses, hope to win shootouts. I'm sick of watching this, personally.

- The season just got much less fun, as ND's playoff chances are toast, short of an extremely unlikely 11 game win streak to finish the season. Their QB is likely gone after this season too. I don't know... just isn't as intriguing to me at this point. I'll still watch, but there will be little to no emotional investment.

- I really hated Kelly going uber conservative and running on 3rd and 12 with 3 minutes left. Fucking lame.

- I hated him not going for two in OT even more. Everyone watching this game knew the defense couldn't get a stop. ND's only non-turnover shot at winning in OT was going for two. I understand that it was conventional to kick the extra point, but the best chance to win was going for 2.

- Hope Hunter is okay. He took a vicious hit. The play should have been reviewed for targeting.

- Hate to say that the season is over after week 1, but if making the playoff was your goal, it's essentially over. This team is a mess.

-Defense stunk up the joint.
-BK going conservative the last 2 drives of regulation killed us
-DK better start every game the rest of the season. He has legit Heisman potential
-Hope THJR is alright
-Defensive scheme sucks
-We're not a team that can absorb losing 15 starters and just roll into the next season
-We're going to score a lot of points this season
-Season isn't over, still a lot to play for. Going 11-0 gets us into the playoffs probably but we probably aren't a playoff team to begin with

Ugh! I hate games like this. Throw deep and run up the middle. They probably ran 4 different plays 20 times each. If you can't stop it just keep doing it. DBs got cooked, DLine got run over. Every Zaire possession was a wash and how they let him start the 2nd half is beyond me.

Hate playing the ref card but a targeting call by the ref or at least a booth review could have given the Irish 7 points, maybe at least 3.He's laying there for a few minutes, how do you not review that? BIG12 booth!

Didn't like the conservative call on 3rd and 12 at the end of the game but the offense played really well and its nice to see the young receivers make some plays

Kizer has defintely proven he deserves to be the man. I feel bad for Zaire, he didn't get many reps, and it's been nearly a year since he played also. Defense played hard, but the scheme just seems predictable. Folston looked ok in return, but looks bigger and slow. CJ Sanders is the man, and EQ looks to be the real deal. We are definitely missing Jaylon and Day at the moment. It was an exciting game, it just felt like the Weis era with an explosive offense and sucky D. Life goes on.

My observation is that safety play will haunt the team all year and I'm worried about our offense if Hunter misses extended time.

Not a very deep team at all this year. Shame. Some bad recruiting coming home to roost.

Just extremely disappointing. Score 47 points on the road and still lose. I wanted Van Gorder gone after year 1 and still have no idea why Kelly has kept him around for 3 years. They should leave his ass in Austin.

The defense was just awful today. After ND scored in OT I was hoping they would've gone for 2. I like Zaire but the guy must look amazing in practice for Kelly to want to play both him and Kizer. It was a mistake to keep flip flopping every drive.

Kizer is just the better player. NFL scouts are salivating at a 6"4 230lbs QB who can throw dimes like that as well as move the chains with his legs.

Oh well, it's a long season and if you're going to lose you better lose early. This is a tough one. I really hope the boys bounce back and this is not another 8-4 season.

1. Pleased with the Offense: sure the ol could block better and rbs and WRs could do things better but the did a great job.
2. Hope Torii is okay
3. Pleased with the CJ and EQ as 1st time starters.
4. Kizer is amazing!
5. Can't think of a bright spot on D. In reality, Texas dropped some passes that should have made the score worse than it was

1. BVG is awful. Schemes looked terrible. No changes in the second half. What did you think Swoopes was going to do when he was in the game?

2. Hopefully nothing serious on Sebastien.. secondary looks bad enough and has enough depth issues..

3. Need to stick with Kizer. Very clearly superior QB. The several Zaire drives were a part of what lost the game.

4. I am still incredibly upset about the no call on the Hunter hit.. and then the subsequent no call when the Texas defender clearly used the linemen to push himself up. Pull it together crew.

All in all.. good game.. but a very bad feeling atm.

1. Seriously can't believe how awful the defense as a whole is. 50+ points? BVG NEEDS TO GO. This is a defense of top recruits!

2. The front seven was particularly bad, especially considering how weak the Texas Oline was supposed to be.

3. Hard to tell if our DBs are slow, or were just going against a kid with world class speed. Disappointing overall though.

4. I am not going to blame Kelly for the QB situation. Word was it was equal on camp, Kelly let them both play and then decisively went with Kizer for most of the second half. I love you Malik, but we gotta ride worst Kizer.

5. I think it's a still a good team going forward. The Sooners made some noise last year witha loss vs Texas, we can too.

6. The targeting non-call was truly a game changer. We probably would have won if it was a correct call.

How much of this can also be attributed to the fact that we have a defensive coordinator that refuses to recruit? Not only is he piss poor at coaching what he's givin, he also thinks he's above going out on the road and actually helping bring in talent for HIS FUCKING SYSTEM!!!!!!

This motherfucker cant be jettisoned soon enough.

I don't understand the play calling after the score was tied at 37. Draw play on 3rd and 12, with Kizer playing as well as he was at that time. Should have stepped on them and they let them up. Plenty of time to move down the field, score and avoid OT altogether.

Unless we blow everyone out I don't see us making the lay offs with this schedule. 2 more true road games? Can't see it.

For as worthless as BVG is, he'd have to be fucking terradumb to not protect the safeties the rest of the year. And in my opinion, he's worthless, but not terradumb. I feel fine with the wideouts. I also don't think Torri Hunter will miss but two weeks. We'll see though. This loss is on the coaching staff though.

Been saying this whole time DK is killing you in the air and you take the ball out of his hands?? Wtf!! Also what's it take to get some fucking press coverage on their WRs on 3rd down. Lastly 18s in you know they are running why aren't we stopping him . Last series in OT was inexcusable they wanted it more than us.

Yes it was, although a good chunk of that talent came from Weis.

I will say that I do really miss Diaco and his bend but don't break defense. Much prefer that to BVG's "OMGZ BLITZ BLITZ BLITZ" philosophy.

My bigger concern is the fact that in year 7 our front 7 got absolutely manhandled tonight. Texas didn't outscheme us or anything. They just literally beat the snot out of us.

I don't know enough about defense to speak on whether BVG is at fault and if so why. But we are shit at tackling and Coleman was getting abused in man coverage. To me, that's the game. I don't know if that's on BVG, position coaches, or players. But given the talent on our defense that performance is embarrassing.

And Brian Kelly, what in the actual fuck? He is so stubborn on this QB bullshit that we got buried in a hole before he finally just stuck with Kizer. I love Malik and we are incredibly blessed to have him as a number 2, but it was so clear very early that Kizer is our QB.

And that third down call with 4 minutes or so left really pissed me off. We don't need Texas to take the timeout there. With that much time left and a QB who is dealing, we should be trying to pick that up. If we convert that that and get one more first down the game is pretty much over.

Just disgusted with so much.

Kizer is the second QB off the board if he wants to go, we have a great line, two very good college running backs, talented WRs, and 4 star players all over the defense.
Tonight was unacceptable.
