Hell of a win! But what happens when need to put points up? I'm just a little scared about our offense

Those on the live chat think I love Tommy. I don't necessarily love him, but we probably won this game because of him. Young quarterbacks have growing pains. This is the first year I think Tommy is a veteran. He was a true sophomore last year...that was part of the reason for his turnovers.

Maybe, just maybe, this arrangement will work out. EG gets the start and they give him opportunities to succeed. I think they can give him better early throws to work in. But, if he's not doing it, Tommy has 20 starts under his belt and doesn't get rattled.

I don't know if it will work. But, Brian Kelly knows more about football than I do.

So true. I don't want Rees to start, but evertime he gets on the field I become his biggest fan. I like the fact that he hasn't let the fact that he isn't starting get to him. Also I hope that we continue to develope Golson as he has lots of talent.

I think that is partially true.

I also think that our play calling was a bit predictable/weak.

We should have thrown a few more short completions to get Golson settled in, then thrown in some play action to take the top off...

Oh well, just my 2 cents. A win is a win!

I agree. You've got a soph QB in a primetime rivalry game. You're backed up in your own territory. Let him settle into the game by running the ball, throwing some easy swing passes and getting him used to the environment. But, it's possible Kelly wants to throw him into the fire early, knowing if he's not ready he can bring in the seasoned Rees. Whatever the truth and strategy is, we won, which is all that matters.

This Notre Dame team does one thing.

It wins against teams that we're not supposed to.

We're 4 and O. Suck it bitches.

A win is a win. Was it perfect? No. But in the end, is there even one fan of the Irish who would not galdly take a 4-0 start? The team has some things to work on, but they are working on those things sitting on a 4-0 record. The day I can't be satisfied with beating Michigan because the aesthetics of the game did not please me is the day I stop following the game.

I don't know about that. We handled MSU last year easily and should have beaten Michigan. I'm reserving judgement on where we are until Stanford, Oklahoma and USC. I love our defensive front 7, but if we don't get our act together on offense we're going to lose all three of those games.

1. The defense continues to be amazing. Te'o is playing out of his mind. The D line is wreaking havoc. The young secondary is going through growing pains, but they made plays when they had too and Zeke Motta has stepped up as a leader and a playmaker.

2. I never thought I'd say this...but I think I'm actually a fan of this 2 QB system we got going. Golson is the main guy, but when it seems like he's confused and going through first year struggles, we have a reliable experienced option in Rees to stabilize the offense. I know a lot of fans will throw a fit about it, but it has gotten the job done.

3. After a promising start, the running game has been disappointing. That's something we need to get back on track against a weak Miami D.

4. 4-0 baby! I don't care if its been ugly at times. We've been losing in spectacular last minute fashion for as long as I've been a die hard. I'll take every ugly win I can get.

Huh?.........................I am speechless, and so are others. Did scUM score a TD? no. They contained Renard Dobinson all night. Forced 6 turnovers. What more do you want?

You and others can be speechless all you want. It doesn't change the fact that Michigan's OLine DOMINATED the LOS, in the 3rd Quarter, to the tune of 11:37 of Time of Possession for Michigan, in that Quarter. It's not like I said that they sucked, just that Michigan DID push them around a bit tonight. So maybe they aren't the Steel Curtain?

Holy hell! We agree on something....

In all honesty, I really do hope Kelly and Co work on a friendlier strategy of easing Golson into the flow of the game.

Especially rivalry games (hint, hint USC)

Give Golson more time. A quarter is too short to pull him.

I think it was a little over a quarter but he looked lost. Not just his statistics (which were horrible) but he looked lost and confused. Not what you want from your starting QB. I say that winning is more important than egos.

I'm happy as hell with the win. But a win doesn't mean that there's nothing to improve on. And if people didn't see Michigan pushing our DLine 5 yards off of the line of scrimmage, fairly regularly, in the 3rd Quarter, then they can believe that nothing is wrong. Then they will stroke out when we lose to Miami because they dominate the LOS. Brian Kelly has is "Next man in" motto; I think the IE Poster motto ought to be "Eyes Wide Open"

It doesn't seem like you're taking into consideration how different the Line's assignments are against a QB like Robinson. I think this line has proven, over and over, how good they are. Including in this game when they had to. Remember, you're talking about a defense that didn't give up a touchdown and didn't play with great field position all night.

that is the stupidest thing anyone could have said tonight...embarrassing

Hop on the Rees bandwagon. Golson would've played just as well or better than Rees played. Granted, Rees played a solid game. But nothing too great. He played mistake free which is what won us the game, but Golson was not in long enough for Kelly to pull the plug on him. At least give him until halftime... Rees only had 115 yards, he was handing the ball off all night tonight, and only led us to 1TD and a field goal. But we all know Kelly LOVES to play for the field goal. I think we need to be a little more aggressive and play for the TD. Short answer: Golson will never mature if Kelly keeps pulling the plug on him. Just saying.

So they pushed us around for 1 quarter?

UM's Oline won the 3rd quarter battle

Our DLine won the war.

UM moved it very well in between the 20's, but when push came to shove, in the red zone, we shut them down.

That is what matters.

They played against Robinson all night....... explain this:

Michigan Rushing Yards by Quarter

1: 21 yards
2: 40 yards
3: 88 yards
4: 12 yards

The rushing numbers, AND the TOP back up what I saw with my eyes. You guys saw it, too, you just don't want to admit to it.

Yeah.. we'll see.

I can't wait for Stanford.

Our D is perfectly set up for a Pro-Style offense... BRING IT.

We will beat Miami because we have better coaches and smarter talent.

Your love of Golson, or hate of Rees, have you blinded. So what in Golson's 3/8, 2INT, 30 yard performance makes you think that he would have rebounded to go 8/11, 0INT, 115 yards, with a rushing TD, the rest of the game?

Kelly has a complex, read oriented passing offense. He's got a talented soph QB who isn't ready to deal with a defense called and organized by a former NFL coach (Mattisom) with a ton of experience calling defenses. Instead of simplifying the offense and letting the young soph QB use his athleticism. he's keeping the offense complex, knowing he can bring in Rees who knows all the reads and ins and outs of the offense. And, he's got Kiel- a true NFL caliber prototype QB- waiting in the wings. Golson has got pressure from both Rees and Kiel. He's in a tough spot. But Kelly is a competition guy. So, I don't think he cares. It could be awhile before we see a QB settle in to being the guy who never comes off the field. I suspect it will be Kiel's Jr. year.

I bet once Golson calms his nerves he goes 150 yards 1td pass and 2ints. I do not hate Rees at all, I actually root for the kid, but we are not progressing with him back there. Again, Golson deserved more time.

Did my first post appear??

Ok so Im rewatching the game and idk if it was the first play int or what but Golson was just lost everytime the camera was on his face... But at the same time I agree with you cogs. Kelly needs to figure out what Golson is capable of doing... He ran 1 play action and 1 wr screen i think, IMO he needed to get him settled and he just never did. And I agree with you on Rees, he might be able to protect a lead but he will never lead us past quality teams... and his rush td was all play calling even Mayock said it as it happened.

Dammit Idk how to use the multi quote but this was for Cogs and KMoose.

And I'll take 88yards in the 3rd against our D for the points they got for it.

Ahem, kmoose, an answer, please

The original point that I made was that getting pushed around for even one quarter is an indication, to me, that this defense is damned good, but perhaps not as good as people were hoping it was. DAMNED GOOD is what I think this defense is. Yet, some people tried to tell me that I had no idea what I was talking about. I'm just supporting my position.
