Looks like a Holtz backfield.

OL IS young.

OH MY we have a Punter Returner.

BVG has work to do.

I miss KMoose's writeups.

- Secondary misunderstandings were understandable.

- Baratti never ran a 4.4 laser 40. Ever.

- Riggs and Luke looked great.

- Farley's still a major liability in tackling (shoulder must not be recovered).

- Schmidt was impressive.

- As I predicted, Fuller >>> Chris Brown IMO.

- Jaylon is a star.

- Heisman is now spelt Golson.

- Thought OL was unimpressive in first half. All passes were made by Golson making a play for himself. Not a lot of running holes. Much better on the ground for the OL in 2nd half.

- DL was average to me. Not impressed.

- Greg Bryant is our #1 back IMO and should get most of the carries against Michigan.

- BVG looks like an axe murder.

- Overall, very happy with the big win. Expectations remain the same until I see more from the defense.

- Fuck Michigan.

Golson looks vastly improved.

Worried by our total lack of pressure on the QB. That was Rice, guys. Come on.

No delay of game penalties (I think) for the Irish! Golson went 14/22 and I counted at least 3 dropped pass that should have been caught and he wisely threw the ball at of bounds at least 4 time. Great to have him back and loved to see how humble he was post game!

I miss KMoose's writeups.

Golson had a great game.

Cam had a decent game, but he just isn't as good as Folston and Bryant (who looked fantastic)

Koyak was solid if unspectacular.

We need a middle linebacker. Michigan, Stanford, and FSU will exploit the lack of a stoudt force up the gut.

Shumate had a rough first half but settled down in the second.

Farley was a pleasant surprise.

Line has yet to gel, but had some good moments.

Riggs is a really good punt returner.

Malik!!!!!!

WRs were a bit quiet today. Hopefully DD will be back for Michigan.

Jaylon Smith is an animal.

We could have used Russell in the secondary today, and the safeties need to spend the week studying the playbook and tendancies. The unit looked a little confused almost all day and we were lucky to be playing Rice and their new QB.

Overall, a solid game but the whole squad has some work to do.

Worried about our line play on both sides. Riggs is a helluva good pick up. Golson performed better than expected, if that is possible.

Nice to have some depth. In years past, the backups would not have scored.

Collinsworth's direction of the D was missed, hope to have better communication on D next week.

I hope we can keep all 3 RBs happy, but Bryant does look like the best.

Despite the slow start, I was pretty damn satisfied!

- OL is YOUNG, need to tighten some things up.
- CJ can't drop that catch.
- Shumate needs to figure out what his responsibility is.
- Joe Schmidt is a good football player, but like we've all said will struggle against power teams.
- Trumbetti and Martini are going to be good.
- Defense has a lot to work on, but I think we have the potential to be pretty good.
- Running backs are going to be really good. No fumbles.
- The difference maker in this game was EG. If these receivers hang on to the ball EG will be in New York come Heisman time.
- This offense should appeal to prospects.
- It is nice having a punt return game.

-Golson looked really sharp. Confident and in full command of field...both things that eluded him at times in '12.

-DL looked a little suspect and over our defense is young but talented.

-Greg Bryant is a BEAST and the 1/2 combo of him and Folston, with a healthy dose of Cam will be awesome. The stable is full.

-Or WR corps is a bit suspect but it is young and I think Golson can help them elevate their play with crisp passes and the ability to extend plays.

Good
-Greg Bryant is a great runner between the tackles. We've really missed a player that can be explosive through the line with strength and knows how to get skinny in the hole.
-Golson threw some freaking dimes down the field. Excellent arm strength and accuracy. Great command of the game and confidence.
-Run blocking was good.
-Corners were good.
-PUNT RETURN!!!!
-Aggressive defense = field position.

Bad
-Linebackers did a relatively poor job against the run. I did like how Jaylon played overall though.
-Pass rush sucked, blitzes were OK. Neither DE is close to an "elite" pass rusher.
-Shumate... man... when he knows what he's doing he can definitely play, but there were some pretty bad busts.
-DL also didn't do a great job of contain or making plays in the run game. Those are HUGE issues for Michigan, FSU, etc.
-That Prosise drop... holy crap... in general, far too many drops by WRs.

The team looked focused and confident, but by no means overconfident.

Golson is a complete quarterback and the receiver by committee looks very good.

I love the three headed monster at rb. All three were impressive and I hope that they keep playing all three. I will tell you why. Running back in today's game is a meat grinder and by sharing the reps between 3 very good options it helps all 3 guys stay healthy.

Riggs and Bryant both looked great returning punts, what a refreshing change.

Defensively it is a work in progress, but Schmidt looked very good and of course Jaylon is everything he is cracked up to be.

Contain Gardner next week and we will be very happy in seven days time.

Offense had 576 yds on 70 plays. 8.2 YPP. Not the 90 play uptempo but full of big plays by backs and WRs.

Backfield ran 41 times for 289 yds, 7 YPC. 5 ball carriers, 3 RBs and 2 QB, all making a big play of 14 yds or more. Golson was the "slacker" rusher 12 carries, 41 yds including a sack, 3.4 YPC AND 3 Rushing TDs.

WRs 22 catches, 287 yds, 12.5 ypp, 2 tds 7 different receivers, 5 with receptions for more than 25 yds. A couple of drops kept it from being much bigger.

Making some tacos so I'll add more in a bit but there is a clear difference in Golson. His understanding of the game and reacting to what he sees is different. That should stick regardless of who we play.

  • Minimum Penalties - well coached game
  • Poor safety play: Shumate is lost and Baratti looked slow
  • Not great tackling by our LBs (first week it's somewhat expected, can't happen next week)
  • Golson looked great: I hope he can continue building off his strong game.
  • Receivers looked good but we had three dropped passes: Fuller, Prosise, Koyack - that won't cut it the rest of the season
  • RBs - looked really good, made something out of nothing on multiple occasions.
  • DL - ended with a couple sacks but weren't getting a lot of push against a low ranked opponent. They were running a fast read offense but still, not great
  • Defense still kept points down besides having two busted plays
  • Special teams - that's what it's like to not lost the special teams battle? Great job by everyone in this unit
  • Kicking - Brindza still makes me nervous. He'll make some and miss some and there doesn't appear to by rhyme or reason.
  • Good first outing, time to prepare for next week. F V C K michigan

Golson spread the ball around. Which I like. He had a tendency, in 2012, to stare down WRs and depend on just one. I think he's vastly improved with that. I don't think, even with DD, today a #1 WR would have been dominant. Fuller had 4, and Koyak 3, of Golson's passes. That's 7 of his 14 completions.

What I would like to see is more RB screens. I think we had 1, to Cam. And he's obvious not the fastest in the stable.

Couple of noticeable improvements from years past--

TWO good punt returners in Riggs and Bryant

Best action out of the slot in YEARS---the big TD from CJ--the dropped TD from CD and two long completions to AMIR----I like Amir a lot there---BEST slot production since Rhemma went down with the knee injury.

Golson came out of the womb with a football, he is a natural.

Not to nit pick. But I think it was 14 catches of 22 attempts

I haven't read other comments yet so I apologize for repeats.

Good:
1. I'm not one to overreact to the first game but boy, did EG look amazing. He has a golden arm and golden feet.
2. I always complain about playcalling but rarely scratched my head today.
3. Running backs look good and complement each other.
4. Offensive line was great in the run block and did enough in pass protection. Need improvement there though but I except they will gel more as the season progresses.
5. Was there a pass interference call on either team today? Amazing if not...
6. Punt returns!!!!!!
7. Nyles Morgan will be a player. You saw flashes there at the end.

Bad:
1. I like Brindza but something about him scares me. I feel like he is going to miss a big kick at some point.
2. Secondary is going to give up plays. We are going to have to outscore most teams.
3. Thought the DLine didn't play well overall. I just don't know if there's enough talent/experience this year.
4. First team really slowed down in the second half. Did not look motivated at all. Can't let up against better teams.

Agree, but we do not have a go-to WR IMO. And we're going to need one.

C Rob has golden hands. I think he's more than capable in that aspect, just needs to get off coverage at the line better.

He's too slow to be a go-to WR at the highest level. We need DD to come back and be that top-3 CFB wr :).

Good
-Glad to have Golson back. His arm strength is just top notch. To had to that he is accurate throwing that deep ball. He can extend plays.
-All three running backs are great assets. Bryant is the real deal.
-Due to the arm strength and ability of Golson to lengthen a play, our WRs can finally get deep behind the secondary.
-Jaylon is everywhere.
-Schmidt knows where to go.
-Punt returns!

Bad
-Some busted coverages. (Fixable offense)
-Wrap up guys.
-CJ can't drop that ball. In general guys can't drop these balls like they did.

Ugly
-Brinzda's miss.
-First two offensive drives.
-Pass rush.

We got the comfortable win Notre Dame should get against a team like Rice. Everyone is healthy who played today. Hopefully Collinsworth isn't out too long.

FUCK MICHIGAN!

Great way to start the season.

Lots of work needed on D. We're lucky this was Rice.

They say "you get better each came". I hope so for our O line.

Question: Did we show all of our cards here on offense or did we play them close to the vest?

1. Special Teams!!!! Loved watching the better special teams play today.

2. Golson looks great

3. Running game looked amazing...we are so darn explosive

4. Schmidt looked much better than I thought he would, very impressed with his play.

5. Cole Luke had a great game.

6. No turnovers on Offense

7. Minimal penalties

8. No injuries

Overall a great game. Fuck Michigan

- Farley's still a major liability in tackling (shoulder must not be recovered).

- Schmidt was impressive.

I disagree with these two points.

Schmidt is a very smart player and I think he has good instincts. He made some very good reads early. But, he will be a major liability against teams with any size. On several plays where he met the RB in the hole (i.e. he read the play right) he did not make the stop. He made the tackle, but only after being carried back several yards. When he had help, he was able to make stops. But one on one he is not likely to win many physical battles.

When Farley was close to the line of scrimmage, he played much better than last year when he was deep or the last man. I'm not saying he redeemed himself from last year, but he was much less a liability than last year.

JMO.
