The D's inability to play a complete game will be a big problem against top teams. Usually they are bad in the first half and better in the second. Opposite today.

Disagree. The committee will know that it was 42-17 and completely out of reach.

It was, but it wasn't. We let them score garbage TDs, just like with GT, and the committee will know that too.

Maybe this?

In 15 g. #NotreDame LB Joe Schmidt has played whole game, ND allowing 20.9 ppg.; in 5 he missed, 41.2 ppg. That's an unfair statistic IMO. There is no way to logically connect 2014's epic defensive collapse (aided by a turnover hungry Golson) to games played in 2015.

I'm irritated by the ending for personal reasons but I don't think the committee is going to punish us for covering the spread and scoring 42 against a top 40 defense. If the committee was going to punish us for things like that we wouldn't be #5 right now. If this was WF or BC I would be more worried about that but Pitt is a good team and this was on the road. Plus we lost our starting RB for the game and we were down a safety for half the game. These things cut both ways.

The guys we lost in the defensive front and constant turnovers were much more a contributing factor to this than Schmidt was, IMHO.

Also, it was last year.

I think Schmidt played much better last year and he was a big reason for the success of the D and a big reason the D went downhill after his injury.

Unless you consider the loss of Joe Schmidt to be a major contributing factor to that epic defensive collapse. I don't think the stat is really proof of much, other than maybe the folks demanding Schmidt's benching are wrong?

It's the Tommy Reese defense.

I would understand the love affair with Schmidt if it was only Morgan behind him. But I just don't see how he starts over Grace and Martini.

They clearly believe his leadership is key. But to me, the defense is super-sloppy, gives up a to. Of huge plays, and falls for every trick play...

"DeShone Kizer has 6 total TDs as Notre Dame rolls at Pitt" -- Matt Fortuna headline on ESPN front page

Looks like not even ESPN is saying ND did not dominate.

Haha, that stat is awesome. Give Joe credit for Cage and Tillery playin better than our NT's last year. Give him credit for JO and Smith playing better than last year. How about KVR, with all his faults, being better than Butler. Maybe Rochell havin his best season yet or Okwara picking up his game. How about Shumate playing his best season to date. Na, none of that matters, as long as Schmidt is on the field. LOL.

BVG must seriously value Schmidt's QB of the defense, because as a player he is outclassed on the field. He is a great guy and I could see an outstanding coach. It's a shame though that the more athletic options on the bench such as Grace, who have played before, don't at least get into the rotation to get some more experience.

That's interesting, because what stuck out to me on that play was not that the QB outran Schmidt(lots of QBs are faster than LBs), but that the outside rusher did not get upfield and let the QB get outside of him, allowing him to escape the inside pressure by Schmidt.
Completely agree. I'm not a fan of Schmidt playing a big role on this D. But I think it's gotten to the point where we are picking apart plays like that where he's close but just doesn't get there. Some of those plays aren't his responsibility.

I noticed a few times we dropped Day in to coverage today. I'm just not a fan of Day in coverage. I'd be happy to never see another D lineman in coverage. One, I believe, happened to be the sac, but I still don't like it.

It is pretty simple. We are one of the best 4 teams in the country.

Love it!!!

Can you tell me what trick play they fell for today?

Joe S, Max R, and James O should not be starters. They for damn sure shouldn't still be in with big leads, if the backup's to them are so bad they aren't starting over those 3. They should be getting as much game time as possible to suck less, incase injury

Solid win but not clean enough to beat better teams. Coaches love these games. Win them, with a lot to coach up. Good win ND football players!

I respect that you fight for Joe on the board, but c'mon, if you cannot see how bad the play is, then I seriously can't take your posts serious. I can't tell if you are just trolling just to troll or if you truly believe that Joe is playing good.

Please go back and rematch the game and watch nothing but Joe. When he is graded for this game, it will be in the negative double digits, it was atrocious!

And before you snap back, I have no problem whatsoever if coach thinks he should play over Morgan. Sure I wonder why, but they have way more evidence of "why" that I can ever have. I just can't take the "well look at the epic drop off after Joe went down last year..." stuff by people trying to defend his play, cause it has been terrible.

The first onside kick. But we got the ball so it was all good.

Actually, even the announcers remarked about how ND's line did not just turn and run, and played the fake well. They may not have been expecting it, but they sure didn't get suckered by it.

Does it affect recruiting?

Does it affect recruiting?

When 4 and 5 star athletes see Kelly and BVG play a no star clearly inferior player because he is a coaches favorite and because of his FB IQ? Got to wonder. Let Joe posy on special teams if we want him to feel an active part of this team. No way an objective scout plays Joe ahead of Grace, Martini or Morgan. As long as we see Lil Joe (5'10" 215 pounds slow and short armed) playing we will see him two steps too slow and whiffing on tackles. Wish this was his 2013 season where he puts a stick on USC wr on final drive. As a team player he should defer some playing time to the other three. Grace has pro potential and we're watching a D II kid playing on a top 4 team. Make the tough decision and bench him Kelly, you've had no problem doing it to Shumate and Redfield.

What would Marcellus Wiley think about that?
