Such a disappointing loss. I'm very guilty, as others probably are, of letting early season success raise my expectations of this team. Turns out the the Michigan and Stanford wins were against pretty mediocre teams I guess,
The defense was going to be our weakness, remember? I was hopeful that as the season developed the younger players would too. The suspensions and injuries have really taken a toll. Having young, talented, but raw freshmen is no replacement for experience. Maybe the scheme is part of the problem with such young players, I don't know, but all of this together is going to make the next two games very difficult.
The offense, this is the real head scratcher for me. I thought this was the strength of the team. Still is I guess but our miscues each game are leaving a lot of points on the field, points we need to win games against better teams.
I've never been a big fan of the spread offense, maybe because I just don't get it. What I do get is that teams that compete for and win big games and championships seem to have the innate ability to run the football when it matters. With a QB that is struggling I wish we could take some of the pressure and reliance on his athleticism away and force teams to beat us physically. I love Golson but this isn't working very well right now. I'm not saying it's just him by any means but the offensive effort is inconsistent and seems disjointed. This unit may be the bigger disappointment to me because they have cost us wins and they were suppose to be the leaders of this season.
Speaking of leaders, I just don't see anyone filling this role, do you guys? Kelly speaks of Golson's leadership but I've got to be honest, I don't think someone with all of these mistakes can really lead the team.
I don't want to be too critical, I'm no coach and certainly have never walked in the Notre Dame's staff shoes.
What really sucks about this is all of the naysayers will be coming with the overrated, weak schedule crap for the next year. Heck, maybe they are right.
Add to this the next few months will be filled with the impending QB controversy, transfer rumors, recruiting wars and finally the "wait til next year" crap.
I can say this, I still hate Michigan and USC, and I want another shot at Northwestern.
