nothing new to report.

team got outplayed, out-coached, and out toughed.

team is paper thin with leadership and if day isn't in there it's even worse.

all yesterday proved is that joe schmidt should unanimously be named the team MVP at the end of the season imo

Does this team remind anyone else of a Weis team? The defense, the late season collapse and the embarrassing home loss (ala syracuse, UCONN)

No. This team has not quit in one game, this year. Quitting was a bit of a hallmark of the Weis teams.

What we have is an offense that can score points on anyone. ND is averaging 35+ points per game. But that offense has also been bitten by the turnover bug. Combine that with a Defense that is in it's first year of a new scheme, and loaded with underclassmen all over the place, and you have what we are currently watching.

I've been fully behind Golson all year, and it's too late to make a change now, but I have concerns about him that aren't going to change by 2015 IMO.

This is the 3rd game I've seen in person this year. Ignoring the fumbles and interceptions, Golson has a real lack of being able to do anything in the middle of the field. I watch our WRs run boring, predictable routes all game with little to no separation, but I'm starting to think part of the reason they don't look impressive is because the middle of the field is non-existent to Golson. IDK if he can't read the field, isn't tall enough, or both. But our WRs run either bubble screens, quick hitches, or quick outs. Everything is to the sides and it has to be a laser, on the money to complete it, because the defense knows it's coming. NW certainly did.

I think it's too late to make a change and Golson should be the starter in 2015. But I'm really wondering IFF we started Malik all of this year, that we'd have been better off in 2015. I don't think Golson's ceiling is as high as I thought it was. We're seeing the same things over and over, and the middle of the field is irrelevant when he's behind center. Hard for WRs to get separation when they're limited to decoy-posts and out routes.

Looking at 'all-in' on 2015, if Malik had started this year, I think he picks up more in this one year (2014) than Golson does in 2012 and 2014 combined.

Hope I'm wrong, but in person it does not look good.

Welcome to the club. I've been keeping a seat warm for you.

And it's way too early to bash the kid and hell probably be great. But Nyles Morgan flat out sucks right now. As does our front 7 as a whole outside of Jaylon. Sending 5 guys and can't pressure NW? That is not ND football.

What's a pass rush? Anyone know how many third down conversions NW had last night...I'm guessing 53 or so? Nyles Morgan needs to take the roller skates off.

When Morgan got pulled after his 15 yard penalty for a few plays, Martini came in. I thought he played better in the few plays he was in than Morgan had all game.

You mean the same Nyles Morgan who had as many tackles as Jaylon Smith?

Smith has not had a great season outside of the first few games. He's good, not great as of late.

I couldn't care less how many tackles he had 16 yards down the field. He's getting owned at the LOS.

News Flash for you, koon:

Manti Teo got owned at the LOS, his sophomore and junior years. He didn't become a true stud until his senior year, when he had Nix and Tuitt eating up blockers in front of him. Most college MLBs have a hard time shedding the blocks of offensive linemen.

Ok. So Smith's production was "good, not great". But Morgan's production "sucked"?

Smith gets to most plays as someone else is making the tackle. He's a step late. Why IDK. It wasn't that way at the start of the year.

I didn't say anything about Morgan sucking. I said Martini played better for the few plays he got a shot. Martini looked more proactive and Morgan more reactive. Using his speed to try and catch up and make the play.

Yes, Morgan sucked yesterday and last week. There's more to being a good LB than registering tackles.

There's more to a football game than the score, too. But that's how you are judged.

Agree. martini is athletic, but a step behind Morgan. Enrolling early def has helped with Martini development.

I quoted koon, not you, in my initial post, pointing out that Morgan had as many tackles as Smith. I took your response to my post as a defense of koon's assertion that Morgan "flat out sucks". I guess it wasn't?

I was just joining in. I don't agree at all that Morgan flat out sucks. I just think Martini was in the right spot more than Morgan was yesterday, and he played a lot less.

Honestly, bitching about Morgan is so far down the totem pole that it shouldn't be registered. True freshman playing MLB never works out well no matter which school. Mentally they just aren't ready.

As for Jaylon, he's had to cover his position and the Mike position too. Double duty.

My problem is BVG and company sending blitzes from 10 yards deep on 3-step drops. The DL is a disappointment and maybe Elston needs to be replaced. Jarron has been dealing with an ankle injury too.

Lack of pass rush coupled with an overmatched safety position is a disaster. Even when Zeke Motta was struggling, he was able to captain the secondary into proper positioning and coverages.

That's what Austin was supposed to do and he's been sidelined all year. There's been no voice.

Now, you move your nickleback outside and have to play Drue or a converted WR.

Please understand that these aren't excuses for poor play. They should have been able to hold NW to less then 43 points. Whether you agree or not, these things do play a role. I'm as frustrated as everyone else and being a defensive minded person, it's even more frustrating.

The rest of the season will be telling. Will they fold or will they battle?

Most had them as a 3-4 loss team to begin with especially with the Frozen Five so how mad can people really get?

Doug Flutie mentioned that the NW team he saw yesterday wasn't the same one he saw on tape the last several weeks. Is he alluding to their game plan changing? I've heard that several times this season.

I suppose it could be a function of Martini coming in with a "package", and maybe the DL in that package was causing more double teams at the LOS? I didn't really notice, with all of the other "in your face" stuff going on.

Koon I agree with you on golson and the middle of the field. I've been saying it since he started his first game. He just doesn't throw the ball over the middle. Koyack is a non factor.

Until I read Koon's post, and yours, I never really thought about it. But you're right. He rarely ever goes over the middle.

The saddest thing is seeing Mike Greenberg gloat all week and seeing Golic wearing Fitzgeralds 95 jersey. Fml

After how many TO's does it become a product of the coaching just as much as it it the individual players?
