Harvard Law Professor Laurence Tribe Warns Dems Pushing Trump Impeachment: ‘You Have to Shoot to Kill’

Harvard Law professor Laurence Tribe appeared on CNN’s New Day to discuss his new book, To End a Presidency: The Power of Impeachment, and the #Resistance Twitter influencer warned Democrats against throwing down the impeachment card too hastily.

CNN’s Chris Cuomo noted that Tribe’s book “comes with a note of political caution,” that “Democrats shouldn’t be rushing down the road of impeachment.”

Tribe explained that the impeachment is not about “garden variety crime,” but “abusing the authority that we give to high officials like the president.” The professor went on to give examples of offenses that Trump could commit that would not constitute crimes, but would be impeachable, including failing to protect the country in favor of enriching himself personally.

“But it will be available only if we don’t use it loosely, and ring the bell every time something looks amiss,” Tribe said. “You can’t be the boy who cried wolf and have a viable impeachment power. You can’t use it over and over again against the same president.”

“If you’re going to shoot him, you have to shoot to kill,” Tribe said. “And that requires an overwhelming majority of a bipartisan kind. Otherwise you’re just going to nick the guy, and make him feel empowered and vindicated.”

I get this and generally have no problem with it. However, I still want to point out that this is from the party that got all upset when Sarah Palin's staff used a map that had crosshairs on certain congressional district races they wanted to focus on.

Everyone did. Women voting for Clinton "because also a women" didn't gain much traction in 2016 and this moment in particular got an eyeroll.
This is true. Dem's new strategy of a Better Deal is more of the same. They haven't learned a damn thing.

Most people see what they want to see and are totally willing to believe anything if you tell them what they want to hear.
LMAO. #NoWonderTrumpWon

What's their path to success?

Not that I agree or disagree with their plan or your statement. Just curious what you believe they should to do gain more support.

Continue trying to import millions of third world immigrants, promise them all free shit for votes, and call everyone who opposes the strategy racist. #bluewave

That's pretty stupid. Why do so many supporters of a Catholic institution say shit like this that sounds like it's straight out of Stormont circa 1970?

Who is this guy? Oh, a cable news guest? What is "from the party"

People were upset with Sarah Palin's crosshairs because something actually happened in one of those districts (see: Giffords).

It is wrong to use a shooting metaphor when talking politics. This guy apologized:

In an otherwise good interview I made a terrible word choice, saying an impeachment “bullet” can only be “shot once” so one must “shoot to kill.” I wasn’t speaking literally, but as one who works hard to reduce gun violence this was just inexcusable. I’m very sorry.

Has Palin?

Unfortunately it's tough to do better than get more votes in every Presidential election since the fall of the Berlin Wall except one, 2004:

Has Palin?

Why does either one have to? Plus the Giffords one was shown not to have any correlation.

You just proved his point. No refutation of his points, just called it "racist" and moved on.

The President is above the law. Trump will not be impeached. He can pardon everyone whom Mueller reports broke the law from federal crimes. He should not appear before the Grand Jury and wait until Mueller submits his report. He could then fire anyone at Justice that he wants to.

Oh really? What was his point? What’s there to refute? It was a stupid unsupported claim. So I pointed out how stupid it was. Hey if he wants to show how much “free stuff” all these immigrants are getting and how this is the Democrats big political idea more power to him. But yeah my point about the ridiculous rhetoric regarding catholic immigrants coming from a “fanbase” of an institution that would not exist without catholic immigrants stands. It does indeed parrot what Protestants in Northern Ireland have been saying about Catholics in Northern Ireland for as long as I can remember.

Typical...paint me as a xenophobic, anti immigrant racist because I oppose open borders. My point was Democrats are bribing new immigrants with free shit for votes and have been for some time. You also need to grasp the difference between legal and illegal immigration.

I do grasp it. In fact when I wrote my masters thesis one of my advisors was a geography professor who wait for it.....was studying migration patterns of Mexican immigrants. A major part of my research was going into the field to interview landscape maintenance workers, all of who it turns out were immigrants. Over the course of my field studies, during my conversations with the geography professor and durin the extensive literature review I did guess how many times “free stuff” came up as a reason stated for immigrating to the US? Zero. The one consistent response was “work”. So based on that this free stuff idea you floated comes across as complete bullshit. Now if you’re spreading bullshit stories to stoke irrational fears of immigrants that is textbook xenophobia.

Now if you want to really put two and two together the idea of providing healthcare for undocumented immigrants makes complete sense. It saves money in that it helps avoid having to provide much more expensive accute care services and it allows heathcare providers to screen that population for diseases such as TB.

I don't doubt your research, but I wasn't talking about the motivations of immigrants. I was talking about the tactic of Dem politicians promising free shit for votes. And anyone who opposes or disagrees will be deemed racist. I believe most immigrants (legal and illegal) come to this country for work, but Dem politicians have been trying to bribe them for several years and this is just one example.

You're out of your mind if you think California can afford $3 billion annually for illegal immigrants' healthcare. With California being what it is, that move wouldn't surprise me but they will do it at their own peril. Good luck.

Ok. How does “bribing” illegal immigrants work in Democrats favor? They can’t vote and therefore have little to no political power/influence as demonstrated by how DACA has played out. If the immigrants are here legally then why shouldn’t they be allowed to participate in policy decisions as they see fit?

As to the healthcare issue I agree that California shouldn’t do it unilaterally. Instead I believe the US should step into the 21st century and provide universal healthcare. Also, if we are going to truly engage in a free market in a “free trade zone” then we should allow labor the same luxury of moving across borders with as little resistance as possible in response to market demands that is currently afforded to capital, corporations and the ultra wealthy.

Read the article. Put two and two together. Not difficult.

How does the Democratic Party get illegal immigrants to vote? Why didn't the Democrats, when they had control of the Presidency, set up open borders...or at least increase the number of illegal immigrants? Man if their goal is to get illegal immigrants in this country, seems like they suck at it.

More like, Democrats realize that these 12 million people have already plugged into communities and made millions of American children and the removal of these millions of people from the economy would cause an intentional recession and moral calamity that would take a century to shake off. They probably also realize that these 12 million people pay a shit ton in usage taxes and increase the purchasing power of Americans at the grocery and hardware stores. Probably also realize the one-way subsidy to Social Security and Medicare. And at the end of the day wonder why Conservatives, who have no respect for the federal government's ability to solve problems and craft impactful policy, want to go out of their way to enforce byzantine immigration laws in a manner that doesn't have am economic benefit or is morally justifiable.

You're out of your mind if you think California can afford $3 billion annually for illegal immigrants' healthcare. With California being what it is, that move wouldn't surprise me but they will do it at their own peril. Good luck.

Wake me up when it passes. This is a shade away from AM Radio, getting all worked up over a state-level legislative bill that doesn't have much chance in passing.

I'd say there's a lot of conflicting info out there, and both sides use "estimates" and projections. A lot of estimates in terms of illegals are based off of arrests. One could argue that when states/cities stop arresting, the data skews or is no longer valid.... Also one could argue that we've increased the number of legal immigrants (which we have) so ones that would have been illegal in the past, are no longer part of the figure or projection.

Spare me the "21st century universal healthcare" garbage. No other nation with single payer has our population AND 12-15 million illegal immigrants to care for. You know California can't afford to do it, so you'd like the rest of us to suffer with you. You can keep it out there and live with the consequences.

As to the Dems bribing legal and illegal immigrants...easy. They're trying to establish a permanent majority.

That would've been too easy. Had they done that, the left wouldn't be able to call Republicans racist for opposing open borders.
