Hilarious. Your and Bluto's view isn't nuanced. It is vastly oversimplifying and mischaracterizing history in order to produce one simple theme: blame America.

Funny how that works.

The thing is there has been nothing "nuanced" about US foreign policy in the Americas. Since the Monroe Doctrine the US has taken a direct role in and used a heavy hand for better of for worse throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America. That's a fact.

The US government have been directly or indirectly involved in the deaths of hundreds of thousands in all of those regions. That is a fact. The CIA overthrew the democratically elected government in Chile. That gave Chile Pincohe. At the behest of the United Fruit Company the US backed a coup that overthrew the democratically elected government in Guatemala and then went on to train the military personnel who formed the core of the death squads there. The US provided direct military aide and encouraged the Junta in Argentine in the pursuit of the "dirty war" there. Those are facts. The US provided direct aid and military training to the government of El Salvador even after members of the military assassinated Arch Bishop Oscar Romero and national guard troops raped and murdered nuns. That's a fact. There's the Bay of Pigs, the Banana Massacre, the invasion of Panama (I spent a month in El Charillo the area that bore the brunt of the invasion in 2005 and most of it was still in ruins) to get Noriega after he decided to thumb his nose at the CIA (same scenario as Iraq only on a smaller scale) and on and on.

How you conclude referring to an overwhelming amount of evidence that demonstrates that US foreign policy in these regions has been a complete fucking disaster and has resulted in death and destruction at every turn as "oversimplifying" is beyond me. Here is a fun fact, guess who trained the Zeta drug cartel? You guessed it the US military. Finally do me a favor and google poverty rates in Puerto Rico. Guess what you'll find? Another steaming pile that is the result of US imperialist folly. Sometimes it's kind of hard to look in the mirror, but hey if you don't like what you see maybe it's time to make a change.

Oh I forgot it was all to stop the pinkos from gaining a foothold. Never mind.

The United States rise to power began with its rejection to join European Colonialism in Africa and Asia. We chose instead to turn Central and South America into our own Guilded Age source of cheap resources and labor resulting in the production of banana republics and US government backed enterprises to support our growing economy after WWI. Shockingly we come to depend on the resources and cheap labor all the way through WWII. From here Central and South America have become despotic and the people begin to look elsewhere for leadership and salvation. Along come the socialist and communist movements and the USs determination to not allow such groups into "OUR" hemisphere of influence. The Cold War is now on two fronts. Unsurprisingly we proceed as Bluto has shown to the more recent installation of puppets and military juntas who all received military training and support from the CIA and our military industrial friends. Add to this the vastly ineffective war on drugs and you have the three most influential US foreign policy issues that have almost singlehandedly formed the culture of Latin America over the last 100+years.

The Guilded Age-Post WWII
The Cold War
The War on Drugs.

Again not persecution. Gangs and violence? We have the same here in the U.S.
Where are parents of kids in gangland areas of LA and Chicago supposed to send their kids?

We've sent many of them to Afghanistan and Iraq.

How about sending them to the suburbs and to rural communities, the same place that the majority of middle class and wealthy people flee to avoid gangs, violence, and readily accessible drugs. My bet is that Leppy lives in a fairly safe suburb or rural area. It's easy to argue that others don't have it so bad when you're safely tucked away in your cozy suburb or rural home and not troubled by daily violence and threats to your safety.

How do you plan on doing this? And I never said certain people don't have it so bad. The narrative from the left is that these people are fleeing poverty and violence. So are thousands of kids in the U.S. Where are parents supposed to send them?

And still waiting to hear what you do for work after your rant about our evil, capitalist society.

20 Examples of What Liberalism REALLY Is

1) Liberalism is college professors and documentary filmmakers accumulating vast fortunes in a capitalistic system by decrying the evils of capitalism.

2) Liberalism is claiming that the "border is secure" while saying we shouldn't deport anyone who illegally crosses the border.

3) Liberalism is "environmental activists" flying across the world to ride together in SUVs to posh environmental conferences where they call for everyone else to live like cavemen in order to save the planet.

4) Liberalism is spewing hatred and profanity at conservative women, calling for gun control that leaves women defenseless against rapists and murderers, and celebrating misogynistic pigs like Bill Clinton while accusing OTHER PEOPLE of being engaged in a "war on women."

5) Liberalism is people who say that asking for voter ID is racist while claiming that black Americans are too uniquely stupid and lazy to get an ID.

6) Liberalism is forcibly taking money you don't deserve from the people who earned it and calling THEM greedy for not wanting to give you even more.

7) Liberalism is saying that the government should confiscate guns from NRA members and kill them if they resist and then claiming that you have no idea why they think that they need guns to defend themselves.

8) Liberalism is people who sneer at displays of the American flag, tell the world America isn't exceptional, and criticize the country non-stop while getting offended if their patriotism is questioned.

9) Liberalism is calling for higher taxes while you cheat on your own taxes.

10) Liberalism is bitter, race-obsessed people who see EVERYTHING in racial terms, accusing OTHER PEOPLE of being racists.

11) Liberalism is saying you're for "choice" because you support abortion while opposing giving Americans choices about their health care, schools, whether they want to bake cakes for gay weddings, or even the light bulbs they have in their house.

12) Liberalism is calling everyone who disagrees with you a racist, bigoted, homophobic Nazi and then calling OTHER PEOPLE hateful.

13) Liberalism is considering yourself compassionate for wanting to forcibly confiscate other people's money to give away to constituent groups you hope will vote for you in exchange for the loot.

14) Liberalism is saying George W. Bush is a monkey who started the war in Iraq to "steal their oil" while becoming furious if anyone criticizes Obama.

15) Liberalism is pretending that Christians are dangerous while radical Islamists chanting "Death to America" and advocating Sharia law are harmless little lambs.

16) Liberalism is calling for guns to be taken away from Americans while you're protected by armed guards.

17) Liberalism is millionaires who have more money than they could spend in a lifetime railing against the horrors of "income inequality."

18) Liberalism is "animal rights activists" who eat meat and wear leather shoes screaming profanity at women who hunt.

19) Liberalism is black pundits who got their jobs solely because they're black and willing to call other people racists going on TV and claiming that white gas station attendants and fast food workers are benefitting from "privilege" because of their race.

20) Liberalism is thinking of yourself as an independent, open-minded free thinker for mindlessly parroting whatever the Democrat Party line is on every issue.

I'm safely tucked away because I work my dick off and I make reasonable financial decisions. Is that an issue for you?

It's no big deal bud, everyone is entitled to their opinions. I just didn't think you'd be one to defend a list like that, but I'm surprised NDfan4life posted it also, he's always seemed pretty cool too.

Bob- Rack Em made a joke. It has nothing to do with the 20 reasons list. It has to do with YOUR list. Reread your post and his.

In response to your first statement above, you implied that living in poverty and violence was not sufficient reason to want something better for yourself and/or your children. As your evidence you continue to reference Americans living in poverty as if they were somehow comparable to the Central American immigrants/refugees. My statement regarding middle class and wealthy people fleeing to the suburbs is well-documented by the many suburbs built up around the large cities you named. Suburbs that came into being in the 1950's and 1960's as the middle class and wealthy (primarily white) fled the cities to avoid the violence and poverty of the inner cities (mostly non-white). In other words, U.S. citizens have and continue to do what you suggest others have no right to do for themselves and their children.

In response to your second statement/question above, you will have to wait no longer. I have been a teacher for 40 years. I started out making $7,200 per year. That same teacher today makes between $25,000 and $35,000 per year. After 40 years, I now make just over $65,000, a respectable middle class living, but probably not nearly what you make (or desire to make).

Now since I have responded to your inquiries, respond to mine. What type of environment do you live in? Do you live in the inner-city that you so fondly like to cite or one of the cozy suburbs? What do you do for a living and what kind of money do you make? Would you have been able to make that kind of money if your parents lived in poverty and made no attempt to seek a better life for themselves and for you?

The United States likes to call itself the land of opportunity and it, for the most part, still is a place where someone can seek a better life for himself and his children. I, and I assume you, have taken advantage of those opportunities to get where we are today. The current crop of immigrants, that you fear so much, is only seeking a similar opportunity for themselves and their children.

The difference between you and I is that I want to leave that door of opportunity open for others. You seem to want the door closed.

Not to take dshans place, but being on the receiving end of a statement means you can only assume the speaker is implying something aka making an inference, correct?

Lot of poop to shovel through here. I'll try to be brief and to the point.

Violence and poverty not being sufficient: Not anywhere CLOSE to what I said. I said violence and poverty are not reasons that fall under refugee status in our country. I said we have the same here in our country, so where should the parents of the children in our country send their kids? Still haven't gotten a serious answer from anyone.

Job: It's always people whose salaries are paid for by government that hate the private sector. I had a feeling you were one. I work in sales in the transportation industry. While I do well for being single with no kids at my age of 28, I don't come close to six figures. My father has been in education for 30 years and has loved every year, despite the financial challenges my family faced when he spent 20 years at my Catholic high school making no more than $45k.

Home: I spent 5 years in the city of Philadelphia, another year in the small city of Manchester, NH, two years in a rural town for grad school, and now in a Philadelphia suburb. There are pros and cons to both styles of living. As for my parents and my future...who knows what would've happened to me if we grew up in poverty? Maybe I would've learned from my parents' mistakes and succeeded. Maybe I would've made a lot of poor decisions myself and repeated the cycle. I don't know.

Immigration: I'm insulted by your last paragraph and your assumptions are stereotypical and inaccurate. How many times do I have to repeat this? I am PRO immigration. I am anti illegal immigration. I do not "fear" immigrants. Never have, never will. America will always have open arms when it comes to immigration. All we ask is what any other country would ask: come here legally, obey our laws, learn the language, and assimilate.

Good day, sir.

Doing nothing to help these people and advocating to send them back into hellish violence fundamentally changes this country. Helping the helpless is what makes this country great. Abandon that and we no longer have a claim to being exceptional in any way.
