Sources: Oprah Winfrey 'actively thinking' about running for president

by Brian Stelter @brianstelter
January 8, 2018: 3:57 PM ET

Oprah Winfrey is "actively thinking" about running for president, two of her close friends told CNN Monday.
The two friends, who requested anonymity in order to speak freely, talked in the wake of Winfrey's extraordinary speech at the Golden Globes Sunday night, which spurred chatter about a 2020 run.

Some of Winfrey's confidants have been privately urging her to run, the sources said.

One of the sources said these conversations date back several months. The person emphasized that Winfrey has not made up her mind about running.

A representative for Winfrey has not responded to requests for comment.

The Democratic race for president won't officially begin until after the 2018 midterms, but many potential candidates are already jostling for position and making trips to Iowa.

"President Winfrey" was the talk of the entertainment world after Winfrey accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the Golden Globes. And the "Oprah for president?" possibility was a top story on morning TV.

The touchstone of her speech was the #MeToo movement. But her hopeful message -- "A new day is on the horizon" -- could have doubled as a campaign rallying cry.

Many liberal-leaning celebrities and viewers certainly heard it that way. And that may have been exactly what Winfrey wanted.

As some political strategists have pointed out in the past year, her fame and wealth could make her a formidable Democratic Party candidate. But insiders have their doubts too: Would Americans really choose a TV star as president twice in a row?

Running for president is a whole different thing,” said Cornell Belcher, a Democratic strategist and former Obama pollster. “It’s not Hollywood. It’s an ugly, nasty, grueling slog through all of these multiple states. It’s going to unglamorous places and showing up at fish fries. To successfully run, you need several things: money, infrastructure and a niche. That said, I think in this current environment — and I cannot believe I am saying this — but if Oprah would throw her hat in the ring, she would be the front-runner.

Feehery: Oprah Dem presidential bid unlikely | TheHill

BY JOHN FEEHERY — 01/08/18 06:51 PM EST

Oprah Winfrey created a social media firestorm when she addressed Hollywood at the Golden Globes on Sunday.

Her best friend Gayle King got “goosebumps” listening to the speech. Her longtime partner, Stedman Graham, said she would definitely run for president if the “people” demanded it.

And of course, the Twitter-verse has gone crazy in love with Ms. Oprah.
That being said, I predict that Democrats will ultimately derail the Winfrey freight train. Here are my five reasons:

1. Oprah is a capitalist: The current zeitgeist of the Democratic Party is driven by Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.)and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and at its philosophical core, it bends socialist. Oprah Winfrey is perhaps one of the most successful capitalists in our lifetime. She has amassed a fortune by making savvy business decisions and by exploiting her winning personality to further her money-making capabilities. Sure, Oprah is famous for giving back to her fans and the consumers of her products, but I betcha she takes maximum tax advantage every time she gives somebody a new car. I don’t know how Oprah will be able to reconcile her desire to make money with the socialists in the party who want to take that money away from her.

2. Oprah is not a politician: The Democratic Party is a party of politicians for politicians. Party hacks like Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer don’t like non-politicians coming in and telling them how to do their business. Republicans don’t mind it when business moguls run for office, because they basically adhere to a pro-business philosophy and they have long promised to run the government like a business. But Democrats don’t share that belief. They adhere strictly to the seniority system in the Congress and while they sometimes get inspired by younger presidential candidates (Kennedy, Clinton and Obama), they still want them to understand the basics of the patronage system.

3. Oprah is not progressive enough: Ira Madsen, a writer at The Daily Beast, put it this way: “Is it in America’s best interest for another billionaire to run for president? Oprah is a generous queen for sure, but let’s not pretend that her stepping into the White House would magically mean a new Pontiac arrives on the doorstep of every American who voted for her.” Sarah Jones, who writes for the New Republic, tweeted this: “Anyone who sincerely thinks Oprah should run for president ought to be banned from writing about politics, or from working in it, for life.” Nathaniel Diorio, another progressive, tweeted this: “Oprah is not qualified to be President. Just because Republicans have thrown standards out the window doesn’t mean Democrats should as well. Dems should squash this ball before it gets rolling.”

4. Oprah transcends race; Democrats exploit it: I remember watching Oprah Winfrey as she rose up the ranks to become a media superstar in my hometown of Chicago. Her appeal was not race-based. It was universal. She won over the viewers by listening to their concerns, understanding their plight and coming up with attractive ways to make her audience feel better about themselves. And that audience was middle-class white women. Unlike Barack Obama, who came from a biracial family but made a conscious decision to identify himself as a champion of black America, Oprah consciously made her media fortune by identifying herself with her fan base, which was primarily white America. Will she have the stomach to play the bitter identity politics that is now the well-worn playbook of the Democratic left? I doubt it.

5. Oprah is a billionaire: Most Democrats who run for president get wealthy only after they win office. She would be the richest Democratic nominee since Jack Kennedy (not counting John Kerry, who married into his wealth after he was in office). How can the party who so actively advertises its hatred of rich people actually nominate a billionaire? It can’t and it won’t.

Sorry Oprah. If you want to run for president, you should think about succeeding Donald Trump on the GOP ticket. He’s a big fan of yours, by the way.

Lord, have Mercy!

A Weight Watchers White House?

Would MREs be assigned points?

Would the deficit run through a constant, rapid inflation/deflation cycle?

Would there be a book assigned each month for all citizens to read?

Would we all be given a car (American Made, of course) at the end of her term in office?

How would Stedman fit in with regard to protocol?

The Color Purple don't run!

I'd vote for Oprah. And I've never once watched her show.

Oprah would win in 2020. Anyone who doesn't kill enthusiasm among younger voters and women would win against Trump. Oprah will crush it with both.

Would Oprah win the primaries though? I have trouble seeing her lose if she was all in. Who'd be the VP? Sherrod Brown? If a Democrat wins in Ohio gubernatorial race this year.

LOL. It will probably happen. Almost created this thread last night. First a dip shit buffoon, in 2020 a talk show host.

Politics is truly a bitch to social media, extremes, and Hollywood.

It would be easy to see how the other candidates could attack her. All they'd have to say is "We let a celebrity win the last election, and look at what that got us?" Otherwise, I think Oprah probably has the charisma to take down the rest of the candidates, as long as she can speak to the issues and carry herself as she always has.

As far as your sentence "Anyone who doesn't kill enthusiasm among younger voters and women would win against Trump." You would think that...and yet Trump beat Hillary.

She would win this with flying colors imo.

Imo though it'll be more disappointing than last nights game.

Thats my point. I dont know any young people excited about Hillary who weren't decidedly liberal women. No moderates were excited about Hillary. Young people were for Bernie.

Oprah would get droves of women and minorities excited.

I can name 25 Democrats I'd rather see though.

Watch her stuff with Ellen... She doesn't know how much milk costs, her ATM pin number, and cashed a check herself last year for the first time in like 30 years. Oprah would absolutely kill with young voters because of her personality and her poverty as a child, however she has absolutely no connection to "real Americans" today.

I do think she would get plenty of votes though. Chuck D, one of the most political rappers ever, however, thinks celebrities need to stop running for office based on a tweet (can't embed) yesterday which I assume points to Oprah as well.

That said I'm a fan of the book Only the Super-Rich Can Save Us by Ralph Nader, essentially saying that given how owned Congress is by corporate interests, a coalition of American billionaires funding progressive democratic reform is maybe the most likely solution to government.

Trump sorta ran on that, albeit while lying, that he was self-funding his entire campaign and not beholden to establishment Republicans.

If Oprah ran on eliminating gerrymandering, publically funded elections, and other sensible democratic reforms that Americans favor, she'd win 400 electoral votes IMO.

But the next President won't have this economy and the recession will be issue #1. That worries me. We needed Bernie to win in 2016.

I'm looking forward to Oprah being President. I might retire my Grand Prix GTP depending on what I get. Our taxes will have to go up though to fund this.

Anything is possible I guess...Never understood daytime talk, so Oprah's stardom doesn't move the needle for me. Don't even want to try and guess her policy positions right now.
We'll see how she holds up under the kind of scrutiny it takes these days. There may be some things that aren't consistent with the image...some folks deal with that ok...some don't. One thing is for sure...every thing she wishes to keep private will be attacked/used/revealed. Rich people with a clue rarely run...they just throw money around and influence policy. I'd be surprised if she actually did.

It's already started. Her being Weinstein buddy, fake book promotion crap, mystical beliefs, and the sex scandal are already making their rounds. I saw a piece in WaPo earlier this week. I'll try to find it. If I were her, I'd chill as master of the her own universe. Who the hell would want to be prez with what she has. I still don't understand why Trump did it.

edit - here it is

Man...thats just the stuff she wasn't really taking steps to hide. I imagine there are those who've come and gone in the Oprah orbit that know things...and they will come out of the woodwork if she runs.

I don't think Bill Gates could run w/o being crucified, Mark Cuban, hell, name someone that could...they'd all come off like Dennis Rodman before it was over.

As I'v seen stated...Ghandi himself wasn't very "Ghandi-like" at times. Mother Theresa wasn't very Mother Theresa-like at times either...

In this "Gotcha" tribal experience...what we see is one persona cultivated by the left, and another by the right...regardless of whose persona is more credible, only a manufactured persona can get elected...not the actual person. Problem is, when truly evil, manipulative people ascend...we don't notice....how would we?
