Here is the problem with TP's logic:
We're taking 7-8 more players. Cool.
2 RB = must have
1 slot = must have
That's it. Another DB, OL, OLB, DE, etc. are NOT requirements. Hell, we already have two OLBs in this class plus Councel and Ishaq from last year. So why the hell does the staff turn away Schutt? I can only think of 2 reasons.
1. Maybe they don't think he's as good as the services say he is... because you always make room for a difference maker. I don't care what sport it is, you make room for an elite guy.
2. They are really confident in some other pieces they like more.
I'm leaning towards #2.... because if you trust that the staff can close (which they did last year like I have never seen another staff do before... flipping two 5* DEs and grabbing a third with a 4:30 AM visit? Pretty darn good...) then you have to think the staff believes they are going to get:
1. Jarron Jones
2. Ifeadi Odenigbo
3. One of Armani Reeves/Keivarae Russel/TJ Davis... basically whatever skill guy they decide they still want or need... probably dependent on the two RBs they take.
4. One of Peat, Banner, Garnett or Stanley
That leaves one spot remaining (at most) for a Shaq Thompson, DGB, Cyrus Jones or whatever home run they try to hit.
When you look at it that way, I get it. What I think was a HUGE error was taking a guy like Turner when you have Badger, Prosise and Baratti all on board. Would I rather have a guy like Schutt that could play NG or OG over Turner? Yes. 100/100 times. Would I rather have Schutt over Byron Marshall, William Mahone, Jarron Jones, Ifeadi Odenigbo, Armani Reeves, Ian Thomas, Shaq Thompson and Andrus Peat? No.
So we all just have to pray that the staff bowls a strike on all of their top prospects. If they miss on even one then this was a monumental error and no amount of sugar coating will cover that.
