I could be wrong about this, but why would we want Clemson to lose? A 1 loss Clemson doesn't drop out of the top 4 and it hurts our SoS. What's the thought process there?

I think if Clemson loses to SC then they drop out of the top 4...

The hope for Clemson would be a loss this week and a loss in the championship game to Carolina. That's probably the only scenario that takes the ACC out of the playoff entirely.

Oklahoma lost to Texas, Alabama lost at home to Ole Miss, and MSU lost to Nebraska. It hasn't seem to affect any of their current rankings. Our only so current loss is to the #1 team in the country. Quality of loss doesn't seem to factor in to their rankings.

We've been riding the "best loss in college football train" since we played them. I don't really agree that it hasn't factored. At least for us it has mattered.

It just seems to me that hoping for Clemson to lose is fools gold. I think we would be better off with Clemson going into the playoffs as a #1 seed and our body of work (plus a sprinkle of irish luck) to get us in.

I honestly don't think the committee gives a shit whether we lost closely to a 13-0 Clemson team or a 12-1 Clemson team. It's the best loss either way. Go Cocks!

I would add ...

UConn @ Temple, Saturday, 7:00 PM, ESPNU

These could help the Irish SOS if they can get past Stanford Sat. night.

Pitt over Miami as well. Pitt at 9-3 could sneak into the Top-25.

USC over UCLA also.

They don't need to be included here, but also rooting for most teams ranked 15-25 to lose just to maybe boost Pitt/USC into the Top-25 if they do win. Toledo and Washington State losing would be nice.

Also IMO I'd rather see Baylor blow out TCU to knock them down even more.

Agree w/ Wooly. I want Clemson to win, and everyone else we beat as well. Need to go out and kick Stanford's ass a bit.

With Navy and Pitt losing yesterday our SOS argument went out the window and to be honest I think Oklahoma blitzes Oklahoma State. So im kind of torn on this but am wondering should we be rooting for Clemson to lose today?

Clemson losing once then winning the ACC is probably the worst case scenario. Clemson losing twice would take them out of the Playoff but then UNC might jump us. We want both Clemson and UNC to lose, then UNC to beat Clemson and win the ACC with two losses.

I was of the mind of Clemson winning out is best for Notre Dame camp until today. I don't believe that "best loss" argument is helping the Irish much at this point. The Committee seems to very much of the "what have you done for me lately" mind. I can certainly see Clemson getting kicked out of the top 4 if the lose to a 3-8 South Carolina team with an interim HC. Hell, Notre Dame got dropped out of the top 4 for their play against a 3 win BC, and the Irish WON that game, although sloppily. I'm thinking a Clemson loss helps more than hurts the Irish by making more room at the top.

Agree. "Best loss" established us as a contender but it's not going to get us in. The way I see it, we need one of the conferences to lose a spot. With Ohio State rolling on Michigan, I don't think that's possible with the B1G. That leaves the following scenarios:

Most likely: Oklahoma St. wins a close and sloppy game v. Oklahoma. (odds: 30%ish)
Second most likely: Clemson loses to either Skarlina (best) or UNC. If the latter, it would really help if UNC loses today. (odds 25%ish)
Third most likely: Florida St. beats Gata and/or Auburn beats bama, team that loses this week wins SECCG. Still a chance a 2 loss SEC champ beats us, especially if it's Bama. (odds <20%)

Barring an epic Michigan comeback, I don't see any scenario where we play over a B1G champ.

edit: Worst case scenario appears to be unfolding in South Carolina right now. If Clemson barely gets by them, they look worse while still being firmly ahead of us.

The question still remains that, if we beat Stanford by 10+, will that put us back above an 11-1 Oklahoma. We dropped because of our "close win" over BC which made us look weak. Beating a top 10 team in Stanford gives us back that quality win.

You now have 2 teams at 11-1 with similar SOS. Add in one team's loss is by 2 points to the #1 team in the country and the other lost by 7 to a 4-7 team.

Added bonus is we beat the team they lost to 35-3. While it hasn't come in to play yet, I feel all of this will factor in the decision at the end. We dropped because we did not look like a contender in the "what have you done for me lately" discussion. A big win over Stanford answers that question.

It won't be enough. Here's the language from the bowl committees website:

The criteria to be provided to the selection committee must be aligned with the ideals of the commissioners, presidents, athletic directors and coaches to honor regular season success while at the same time providing enough flexibility and discretion to select a non-champion or independent under circumstances where that particular non-champion or independent is unequivocally one of the four best teams in the country.

I think we're a better team than Oklahoma. But no matter what we beat Stanford by, that would be equivocally better.

If we're going to get in through the Big 12's door, we need Oklahoma to lose.

What makes you think the common opponent hasn't come into play yet? Jeff Long said they are aware of it.
