removing your captain/playcaller/emotional leader from the heart of your defense would be demoralising for a defense though too. Guys on II podcast were talking about because of how unorganized the safeties are on, there is no leeway to give Morgan any playing time because the safeties need so much help communicating and getting lined up

Can't Schmidt just coach and line them up from the sideline? Just kidding. Not really.

It's seriously like they're playing with 10 guys when he's in there. Has anyone said they'd rather have the more athletic guy who makes mistakes than the captain who can't tackle? ;)

If Schmidt isn't playing his position well AND the other positions are consistently out of place then what is his value-add on the field?

we are handicapping our own defense....love the guy but it's time!!

id be keen for Joe to be replaced too but i just don't see it happening now. Hard to believe after the Tommy Rees years the same thing has pretty much happened all over again just on the other side of the ball

Interesting analogy! Great perspective.

It is also interesting for the second time we have played Pitt in a row, we are suffering an ineligible player due to targeting!

Anyone going to this game? My buddy and I are going over Friday night. Yes...I'll be wearing the Leprechaun outfit. Ofcourse, there is a 50/50 shot of getting beat upon by the Pitt tough-guys. We need some eye-test points so i'm hoping we pound these guys. Stop Boyd and we stop Pitt IMO.

Talkin' Bout Practice: Nov. 3

Talkin' Bout Practice: Nov. 3
Written by Sam Werner on Tuesday, 03 November 2015 10:03 am.
Pitt had its first full practice of Notre Dame week this morning, working outside at the team's South Side facility. Here are a couple of quick notes and videos from what went down.

- The most exciting development of the day was that we actually got to see two team plays before the media viewing window closed. The coaches interrupted positional drills and ran a "sudden change" situation, where the offense and defense both had to quickly get into team formations. From a lineup perspective, it's worth noting that Mike Caprara was out with the first unit, despite being listed behind Bam Bradley on this week's depth chart.

- As for the plays we actually saw, the only one worth noting is the first, where Jester Weah made a nice, jumping sideline catch over a defender I couldn't quite identify. Weah came down with the ball, was nimble enough to stay in bounds and took the ball about 70 yards for a touchdown. It'll be interesting to see if Weah can get some game action moving forward, because maybe there is something to the coaches' theory that he just needs to build his confidence up and has the potential to be a playmaker on offense.

- The only other real note from today was that wide receiver Tyler Boyd was in a yellow vest, indicating limited contact for him this week. That's not really any surprise, as Pat Narduzzi has said repeatedly that, given Boyd's usage, it's important to keep him fresh during the week.

Cardiac Hill, Pitt's Sbnation affiliate did a preview of ND yesterday
At First Glance: Previewing Pitt's next opponent, Notre Dame - Cardiac Hill

All you need to know:

Pitt will have its hands full with Notre Dame. On paper, this looks like one of those games that the Panthers will have a difficult time winning. But the Panthers' success against Notre Dame and head coach Brian Kelly can't be ignored, either. For whatever reason, it's a game Pitt is always very prepared to play. The Panthers have won three of the past six games (including the last one in 2013) and while the Irish have taken three of the last four, they've won those three by a combined 12 points.

Pitt should have a chance to win the turnover battle and getting the game at home is a benefit, of course. The Panthers also get a little extra rest with Notre Dame playing late Saturday night and Pitt having been off since Thursday night's game. Few would argue that the Irish are the more talented team but while things look bad on paper, it would be foolish to count the Panthers out, too.

It's another one of those, "has ND's program taken the next step yet or not?" games... the old ND will struggle and possibly lose... turned the page ND will smash a lesser opponent...

Wow - since the 2011 Pitt game (last noon kickoff) Notre Dame has played 25 primetime games.

Here's how it's going to go.

Another road game where the opponent plays their ass off because it's ND. We still win, but it won't be pretty or by as much as many would like. Post game analysis on IE will question red zone play calling, why Day is dropping into coverage, why ND can't put anyone away, why BVG can't make adjustments until halftime and of course, the obligatory calling for Schmidt to ride the pine. Then Sunday we move up a spot or two in the polls and we post all of the scenarios which will keep us out of the playoffs.

Kelly said this weekend at Pitt will be another tough road game where the players need to compete for four quarters.

Says ND has a unique ability to play for four quarters.

BK on noon start: There won't be any excuses for the kind of play we need against a very good Pitt team.

Asked about differences between this year and last year (both 7-1, ranked in the Top 10). Kelly calls last year a learning experience.

Kelly said turning red zone trips into touchdowns has been especially difficult for ND on the road.

BK: offense is what it is. Will spend more time on red zone offense and need to improve efficiency. Self-scouted play-calling this week.
