Seriously, our defense wasn't great today, but it wasn't as bad as the stats made it look. We were playing prevent defense for like the whole second half.
I keep seeing this but what did we prevent? They had scoring drives of like 1:30 and 2 minutes and scored 4 touchdowns. We prevented nothing.

Am I happy that the D gave up as many points and yards as did? No

That being said, if their was ever a team that knows our D, it is definitely WF for obvious reasons. Also, the fact that we kept scoring and handing the ball back to them gave them a ton of opportunities.

I have no doubt the coaches will be all over them this week.

All told, not the best game, not the worst either. We are 8-1 and ranked 3rd in the CFP poll. We have twice as many wins as last year and more to come. Be happy, move on, beat Miami!

And cheers! Winning is most important. I’m just looking ahead and looking for the close to perfection we’ve had recently. Just wasn’t there. Go Irish!

They started subbing backups in way too early once they felt like the game was in hand, at least that's my take. I don't know if some starters were dinged, they thought the game was in the bag or whatever but the drop off was noticeable. Bottom line, the final score shouldn't have been that close. I think WF even covered the spread.

I'll take the W all day but ND lost some "style points" along the way. I'm sure BK will spin it somehow.

In addition to ESB not leaving Elko won’t be leaving early after today’s Schmitt show. If I were him his guys get no love for making what should have been a 48-24 game 48-37. A win sure but not in line with what we’ve done to date

Per usual this is garbage, Elko’s resume is insane. One game doesn’t take that away.

Was at a wedding for the second half. Shocked by the score please tel me no major injuries.

No major injuries. Adams was out just to be safe. Wimbush had a bruised hand but came back in. Kelly probably pulled him a series too early. All in all not bad if this is our letdown game. I'd much rather be disappointed with a double digit win than what could have been a loss last season.

I don't know if that's on Elko, it seemed like the D was back to tackling like the BVG days. Gave up a lot of yardage after first contact.

Not to be a dick I keep seeing this and wonder what you are actually watching?

To start their last drive we started Morgan coney Tranquill at LB. Tillery Bonner Hayes and Hayes on DL. Pride, love Elliot and Coleman in the secondary. Those are our starters.

Yeah the starters on defense played all the way through.

Urbie has been blown out twice this year and guys would give him 8 mil a year. No one is happy with this performance but let’s not get crazy over it. It’s been the exception clearly so far this year.

This reminded me in so many ways of ND football circa 2014-2016. So many yards, so many points, but so inefficient with horrible defense. Despite a ND record 721 yards and 48 points how many yards and points were left on the field? How many big drops and bad plays robbed us of more yards and more points? That 32 yard run by Dexter Williams would have been a long touchdown run if he didn't pull something on the play. I guess that is why it is so frustrating.

Which is so awesome when you consider the huge slob knob action ND fans tend to give him. Arguably the most talented team in the country has been routed twice, and once by a non-factor team.

Let’s be clear though, I think the D has earned the benefit of the doubt so far. This just wasn’t good enough.

Time to get ready for the next game. Definitely will need to get back to better tackling for next week.

The DL was average today, and individually, Nick Coleman and Jalen Elliot we're really weak IMO.

Really wish Aloha Gilman or whatever his name is could play this year.

Apologies to the board. Re-read my comments. They were definitely cunty. Wasn't my intention, though. Could blame it on the Southern Tier 2X IPA, but that's the pussy way out. I didn't word my comments carefully enough. What my main point was from all my bullshit posts was: we're a top 4 team. But, I was severely disappointed in the 2nd half offensive and defensive play calling. I don't think it's indicative of us being a shitty team or anything like that, but I feel we still lack that homicidally competitive nature to just end teams and make them regret putting on their pads. Yeah, you can point to the 20 point wins and all that, but even with NC State, we coulda run that up to 50. It's petty, I get that, but I just wish we'd run up the score and not go to a prevent and just keep coming at people. This game could have easily been 48-17 if we didn't go to the "prevent slash give up 4 TD defense." I understand my opinion may be that of the minority, but I was being kind of an ass, wanted to explain myself and apologize to the board for maybe my snarky behavior. Cheers mates. Go Irish.

Reps.

For what it's worth, every team has a couple "meh" wins in college football. Teams are more up and down that the pros, just the way it is.

The defense looked like a BVG defense today and that's embarassing. But they play 3 top 15 teams in 4 weeks, it's easy to see how they came out flat against WF pinched between those games.

I don't think this is a preview of how the defense plays going forward, I think they'll be up starting next week. If they do play that bad though, well lose at least 1 of the next 3 games, and get shredded by and playoff team.

so let's give them a 1 week pass and see what they do against Miami.

The defense was pretty much inept all day. Other than the int for a near touchdown, they were pretty hard to watch. I shutter thinking what would have happened IF Dortch was able to play. Damn, that was bad!

Sometimes I wonder how good everyone on here is at their actual jobs LMAO. That's not meant as an attack on anyone, just some perspective.

Give these kids a break. 8-1. #3 in the COUNTRY after a 4-8 season. 710 yards on offense tonight. I could go on but you get the point.

Wake played a defensive scheme they have practiced against for three years straight.

Irish played second string backs most of the game and Book 4th quarter.

I'm going to bed with an 8-1, badazz, in the playoffs team I root for......

I have to agree that the defensive play calling was REEEAAAALLLY conservative in the 2nd half.

We played far out of our niche and it showed. They need to be swarming and hawking for the ball, but everyone's so far off the ball it's kind of hard to man up and take the fight to them consistently. The players also were bad today. Lots of missed tackles and blown coverage. Elliott and Coleman had their worst game by far. I don't pin too much on the line, because WF simply implemented their gameplan to perfection. You can't get pressure on the QB when they're going fast paced and getting rid of the ball quickly. Essentially what NC State tried to do last week, but the secondary rose to the occasion. They didn't today (except for Love). Very disappointed in Tranquill and Morgan, but they'll bounce back.

This was an outlier, after 2 tough big games. I'll be expecting the genuine article ND of the previous 7 weeks to be back in our South Beach offices Saturday morning.

Geez, if you think people are a little too critical of this performance, don't go to NDNation. They're flipping out about the offense over there. Crazy.

They just had huge back to back wins against ranked teams.
A let down was coming. The fact is, they still kicked ass just played conservative in the second half.

And gave up 37 pts. and 587 yds to team that didn't even have their best RB nor their best and most dynamic WR (Dortch). I ain't saying they suck by any means it's a just fact that the D didn't play worth a crap today, like it or not!
