S.I.D. Post Game Notes

S.I.D. Post Game Notes

TEAM NOTES
Notre Dame averaged 9.0 yards per offensive play, the most for the team since the 1998 season. The previous high offensive average in that span was 8.8 yards per play, set three times against Wake Forest (2012), Washington (2009) and Temple (2013).
Notre Dame did not attempt a punt against Navy for the fifth time in the last nine meetings between the teams. In fact, the Fighting Irish have only attempted seven punts in their last 616 offensive plays against the Midshipmen.
The 32-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Rees to TJ Jones in the second quarter was Notre Dame's 15th passing play of at least 32 yards through nine games. The Irish had 11 all of last year in 13 games.
Notre Dame's conversion on 4th-and-1 from the Navy 43 on its opening drive of the game was its third conversion on 4th down this season. The Fighting Irish are now 3-for-8 on 4th down in 2013.
Notre Dame scored first for the third time this season, thanks to a touchdown on its opening drive. The Fighting Irish are now 3-0 when scoring first in 2013.
Notre Dame's 89 rushing yards in the first quarter were the most for the team in the opening period this season. It was also the most gained by the Fighting Irish on the ground in the first quarter since the team picked up 92 rushing yards last year against Wake Forest.
Notre Dame's second half shutout streak of 75:11 ended on Keenan Reynolds' four-yard touchdown run on the first play of the fourth quarter. The Fighting Irish had not allowed a second half touchdown since Arizona State's Marion Grice hauled in a 16-yard touchdown pass from Taylor Kelly with 11 seconds remaining during the Shamrock Series matchup at AT&T Stadium.
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
George Atkinson broke free for a 41-yard touchdown on his first carry of the game during Notre Dame's opening drive. Four of Atkinson's 10 career rushing touchdowns have covered 40 or more yards.
Tommy Rees now has 56 career touchdown passes in his Fighting Irish career, good for third place in ND history behind only Brady Quinn (95) and Jimmy Clausen (60). Rees' 17-yard touchdown toss to Ben Koyack in the second half was his 22nd touchdown pass of the season, a career-high and the fifth-most in a single season in program history.
It was Rees' 21st career win, moving him into solo ninth place in Fighting Irish history ahead of John Lujack and Joe Theismann.
Notre Dame scored on its eighth consecutive possession with Rees under center with Kyle Brindza's 26-yard field goal in the first quarter. The Fighting Irish scored six touchdowns and added two field goals in consecutive possessions with Rees on the field dating back to the second drive of the game against Air Force.
Rees' second quarter interception was the first he had thrown in his last 60 pass attempts, dating back to the first play of the fourth quarter against Arizona State.
After not scoring a touchdown in his first 29 career games, Koyack has accounted for three scores in his last four games.
TJ Jones recorded a catch in his 36th consecutive game for the Fighting Irish. Including today's effort, Jones has had multiple catches in 32 of those 36 contests.
Jones became the 10th Notre Dame receiver to surpass the 2,000-yard mark for his career on a 46-yard reception from Rees during the second Notre Dame drive of the game.
Jones had his fourth career 100-yard receiving game today, joining his efforts this fall against Temple (138), Arizona State (135) and Air Force (104).
Jones's 36-yard touchdown catch was the 17th of his career and moved him into solo eighth place in Fighting Irish history, passing Jim Seymour.
Jones has now hauled in at least one touchdown reception in six straight games, dating back to the Michigan State game earlier this season.
Jones passed Golden Tate and Tom Gatewood for fourth on the Notre Dame career receptions list (159).
Romeo Okwara registered his first career half sack during the opening quarter, combining with Carlo Calabrese to drop Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds for a loss of five yards. Okwara was the fifth different Fighting Irish defender to log at least a half sack this season.
Kona Schwenke set a career-high with 11 tackles.
DaVaris Daniels has recorded a reception of at least 20 yards in 13 of his 20 career games played.
Brindza's first quarter 26-yard field goal tied him for sixth place on the all-time Notre Dame list with David Ruffer (33).
Tarean Folston set a career-high with 140 yards rushing on 18 carries. He was the first freshman since Robert Hughes in 2007 (Stanford) to run for at least 100 yards.
Folston had gained only 116 rushing yards total in his first seven games played this season.
Folston's one-yard touchdown plunge in the fourth quarter was his first career collegiate touchdown.
Conor Hanratty earned his first career start at left guard.
SERIES NOTES
Notre Dame and Navy met for the 87th straight season Saturday. The Fighting Irish improved to 74-12-1 all-time against the Midshipmen.
The Fighting Irish improved to 136-26-5 all-time against service academies.
With the win, Notre Dame has now gone 27-4 over its last 31 games.
It was the first time since 2007 that ND has played service academies in consecutive weeks (Navy on Nov. 3, 2007 and Air Force on Nov. 10, 2007).

Are you guys kidding me? This is football. Everybody knows the risks.
So far today I have heard we should stop playing navy because they run the option, because they chop block, because they have the chance at beating us. We should replace them with an easy ACC team.
We should get rid of the natural grass and play on picture perfect art turf.
Maybe we should only play when the weather is between 60-75 degrees with light breeze. And only play weak teams that have no chance at beating us while our players run around wearing flags around their waists so they can avoid contact and avoid injury while playing on soft mattresses spread out over the field.

This is football. Get over it! Damn fair weather fans sitting behind their computers trying to find blame in everything that does not matter.
This is ND!
Things have been this way long before you were a fan and will remain this way 'til you jump on a different team.

You're kidding, right?

I don't think he's talking about serious critiquing of a play or scheme but the whiners lamenting "there's nothing to gain by playing service academies (we get bashed if we win and bashed more if we lose or don't crush) so we should play a weak aCC team instead."

"Recruits won't be impressed with a service academy game." (Apparently they would with a win over Savannah St.)

There were comments about cut blocks were made before during, and after the AF game where we romped. This week against a tougher opponent the comments mushroomed by comparison. Imagine their fear if we faced GT in a bowl game.

If Cut blocks are indeed a safety issue it should on the agenda for the postseason NCAA Rules Committee to deal with.

Listening to a little bit of the post game show and a point was made that Swarbrick said that it's important to respect tradition but also not to be handcuffed by it. Times change and things evolve; gotta evolve with it or it will be too late.

I listened to the whole post game show, and Reggie Brooks and Chris Stewart BOTH made the point that Navy was hardly cut blocking at all. The only cut blocking they saw was out on the edges of the defense. They both stated that cut blocking was a complete non-issue in this game.

Maybe ND should start cut blocking Navy? I respect the service academies and all, but am guessing (along with everyone else), that Nix only sat the past 2 weeks because they should be easy wins. He has a few games left and is a probable top 10 pick. If that is the case, I respect the staff for looking out for him. Tradition or not, ND should wipe the floor with Navy, but the cut blocking is a joke. Maybe it should be called as "targeting?"

Hats off to Navy. They played all out.

Defense this is all I have to say. When your job is the QB go get him don't just get close and follow to sideline get after the pitch man!! Make him pitch. That was the whole game. BYU uses it!

Now we Never stop playing Navy. I could care less what your gripe is. They are the reason you get to watch ND Football. 11 NC seasons I think we can handle playing 2 Option teams.. Come On Man.. We get injured vs a spread offense, should we stop playing against them also? Man up beat the cut block and make the tackle.

How about you replace Savannah ST with Virginia or NC St since they were talking about playing a lesser ACC team not a ****** FCS team. Talk about a strawman arguement.

Not enough, if ya ask me.

This whole, "Diaco sucks!" Crowd needs to put up, or shut up.

Who would we sign (realistically) that would be better?

Mike Elston. Mike Elston from the current staff would be significantly better.

1) Less arrogance;

2) Just as much "love!";

3) More aggression;

4) Just as smart.

Changing the culture is one of the reasons this team is starting to succeed again. It may not be blowout wins, but it's attracting better recruits and it's bringing wins, regardless of how close they are. Regressing to our old ways isn't going to fix things. The grass needs to go. Maybe TJ still slips on turf, but the grass certainly doesn't help us. Didn't help us when USC was crying about how long it was in 2005, Reggie still ran all over us. The band needs to stay, but so does the music over the loudspeakers. We need the jumbotron too. Jack Nolan in the post game pointed out against ASU, despite things looking grim at times, the fans were engaged in the game unlike any of our home games this year and were more lively because of the video screens. They also help to give fans in less fortunate seating a better view. A jumbotron wouldn't hurt us, and it could only help through revenue and fan participation.

I thought about this too, but you have to figure that no one sees cut blocking more than the Navy defense. Maybe not their starters, as I'm sure Navy has some sort of scout team they have go against the starting Navy offense, but certainly Navy's defense is well versed in cut blocking. They see it every week in practice, and I'm sure no one else would be better at getting off the block or avoid it and make plays. That said, I'm not sure how you avoid the injuries and still try and win this game. Maybe we could have put an extra Safety in the box, it seemed like we weren't respecting the dive again this year. Our corners had a harder time getting off blocks to attack the pitch man too, credit their WRs.

Despite the injuries Navy causes, I just don't think you can outlaw the cut block. It's a pain, and while I've only been through it at the high school level (It's not fun cut blocking a 325 pound guy and have him land on top of you at 180 lbs), it's the best defense a smaller team has against a bigger team. A cut block isn't an injury to the head, so if a player is injured theres rarely any long term effects. If Navy and other teams can't cut block, then it effectively dooms what remains of the true Option attack. Navy and other teams would probably be forced to adopt a Spread and it's doubtful they could be very successful. Yeah, the Spread was created originally by weaker teams that wanted to make better athletes have to play in space, but the other teams are learning how to defend it better all the time and they'll always have better athletes.

I don't advocate removing Navy from the schedule. 60+ years is a long time to be indebted to someone that saved your school, but nevertheless the school probably wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for the Naval academy. Perhaps the best course of action is to limit the number of Triple Option attacks we face each year and only play Navy. In reality, that's probably whats going to happen anyway with the move to the ACC (Well, maybe get two /w GT). One Triple Option game each year should be fine, and maybe we should make Navy that first game of the year each year so we can get it out of the way and take some extra time to prepare for it. It would allow more time to recuperate afterwards as well.
