I think just from a logistical standpoint they need to add a few more west coast teams. The LA schools having to send teams across the country constantly, not just for football, is going to be extremely taxing.
Adding Oregon and Washington (or Stanford) wouldn’t “murder the rest of the P5” so much as ease along the inevitable transition to the P4 when the Pac-12 leftovers join forces with the Big-12 leftovers to form what could actually be a pretty decent conference with a lot of upside. And yeah the B1G can’t leave the LA schools on an island out there indefinitely.

What’ll really spell the end of the P5 is when the ACC breaks up. But that’ll be because the SEC makes Clemson and FSU and maybe Miami or UNC an offer the ACC Grant of Rights can’t overcome.

Yea, I've been trying to keep up with this stuff - since there's the stuff out there about the Big Ten and Irish. I think the Big Ten's immediate plan is 3 more West Coast teams and ND. I believe that puts them at 20. One thing that looks like a sure bet - they're not done expanding

I think that's likely, but absorbing half of the PAC is probably bad for business on multiple fronts.

According to this Tweet, the B1G media rights contract contains language that specifically says how much the B1G contract will increase if Notre Dame joins the conference. If true, this means that all parties know the exact number ND will bring to the B1G.

It sure seems like ND is going to sign a lucrative deal with NBC with the understanding that if/when the ACC folds then there is seamless transition into the B1G.
Correct. Now, the next question is, how much and in what way will ND fight to keep the ACC together to avoid having a Shotgun wedding?

Might be wrong, but I can't see ND doing much. With the current ACC media contract, the only way to keep them together is to pump money into the other schools. ND isn't going to do that. Everyone knows the B1G and SEC would love to add ND, so I don't think it would be looked at like a shotgun wedding. It's more like to good looking guys waiting for the super hot chick to step out of divorce court.

I heard from two different people yesterday that Notre Dame is going to the Big 10.

Not sure why we’d do much at all to keep the ACC together. I don’t think we’ll be the ones to break it up, but hard to see us going out of our way to save it either when between the two it’s pretty clear we’re better off in the Big Ten at this point.

I wonder if after the ACC GOR gets broken if we work out a similar deal with the Big10. Partial membership.

Interesting. Amazon offered more money than NBC and CBS to have exclusive rights to the 3:30pm game. This would have meant that top tier game would be available on streaming only.
I know I'm apparently in the minority online when I say this, but going streaming-only is still a quick way to become "What happened to Team XYZ?" in a world when Alabama is on ESPN and I think the Big Ten knows that.

I’m pretty sure that’s the majority opinion! Streaming-only would work fine for existing fans but would greatly hamstring the accumulation of future fans. Pretty sure most people agree on that.

I forget if it was here or another forum, but people acted like I was the crazy one for saying ND would be better served signing a new deal with NBC or CBS, over relegating its brand to a streaming service. *Of course* I pay for so many streaming services that I don't even use, but *broadcast television* or cable are still the easiest ways to draw in eyes in 2022.

Agree, streaming while gaining popularity is still something of a unique service in the way it's delivered. Not sure fans want to have to keep tabs on what games are on what service and the interruption of stopping one service and loading the next. So much easier to hit a button on the remote to jump back and forth between games.

I don't think the money is really that big of a deal long term, I think ND can probably get paid in the same ballpark as the B1G by themselves now that we've seen the details of the B1G's deal.

I think the bigger problem for ND, long term, will be that once that playoffs expand (probably to 12 or 16), networks will pay more for the B1G/SEC to drop the cupcake games to increase the value of their inventory. Once that happens, I think it will get pretty tough for ND to put a full schedule together. Half the SEC is resistant to bumping from 8 to 9 conference games, let alone going to 10/11 then scheduling ND on top of it.

I kind of envision this playing out over the next 10-15 years where the B1G/SEC take who they want from the PAC12/SEC, then the leftovers from those conferences create a third division of the left behinds (joining with the B12) that will still have playoff access, but be paid far less than the B1G/SEC. I think a B1G that finishes up around 24 schools with some ACC members in the south makes a lot of sense, would be pretty close to covering the entire country at that point.

ND Football joining the Big Ten would be the death panel we were promised but never received.

UNC hoops in the Big Ten would be great. First time they came to Northwestern would be a melee. Demand would be more than they could handle for a game on campus in Evanston.

This mf just said FSU has a pretty good academic ranking, then used the US News rankings as evidence.
Yeah, there are some points I disagree with, no doubt. I agree with you. Interesting analysis overall though.

Oh yeah, it's definitely worth a read. Prob some of it could be guessed at and I think ultimately what matters most is which schools put the most asses in seats, but, the difference between UNC and, like, Cal, can be hard to really quantify. So, it's a fun exercise.

The UNC/Cal thing is a great point to highlight! I also would not have expected Clemson, Utah, and Stanford to have been in the same "tier," FWIW. Just something to chew on while we wait to see how the dominoes fall. Thanks for your comment!

I mean theyre ranked 55th in US news. Solid not great. The US News is probably the goto ranking ND’s fans point to to highlight its academic prestige.
