Since we can give rep for insightful/ informative posts, why can't we take rep away for... some posts in this thread?

you can give negative reps, i don't think it actually takes any away but it shows your dislike for something. But normally that is done to some one who just sayings this that are completely idiotic or in other words a "troll"

You can. The "add" to reputation button allows you to disagree with the post. I am tempted to do the same thing as some of the commentary sounds like it is coming from someone "under-the-influence".

And in some sense I believe that it does take something away [symbolically], though I don't understand all the mechanisms of the board. Johnny and others are WAY smarter than me on these things and he has done a good job of defending this place from certain poison-makers in the past, if I read the mechanism correctly.

Thanks for the clarification. Glad to know I wasn't alone in my /facepalm, OMM.

So I should refrain from negatively repping someone unless they're really over the line? I don't want to step on any toes.

Oh I don't know if their is any specific etiquette but from what I have seen its takes something extremely over the line. For example someone that bashes a current player just for the fun of it and has no real reason, or recruit. Then again everyones opinions are welcome.

Also, you have the right to neg rep anyone, just don't get carried away. Someone might turn around and do it to you for the fun of it. But this is just a message board so no one should get their feelings hurt if a neg rep is sent to them. You know.

Herbie has been prob. the most 'pro ND" guy on ESPN over the past six years or so... pointing out our speed hasn't been there in the secondary and that the talent is elite anymore is not hating... it's pointing out facts.

go back two years and he was the ONLY guy on ESPN to ever give us any love... well, other than Lou of course... I guess you could say he's been the most fair about it for sure. In fact tha most "hateristic" thing I can ever remember him saying is the high school defense comment last year... one time... against ND that is a great track record for a guy coming from ESPN.

I might add that if you have watched these panels many times, they have a planned structure to them. One guy, usually someone like Reese-whatever-his-name-is, acts as the facilitator/provocateur. This guy even usually sits in the same chair [the far leftside]. His job is to instigate commentary out of the others who are freed up to unload whatever viewpoint they are comfortable with. This is the role that was given to Herbstreit in this session. He was the initiator and the guy who stared at the guy to go next. He, in my viewing, played his role properly and was fair on top of it.

Yes, it is a show... and while some of the dialouge may actually play out as it did back stage it is still basically scripted by time we see it. Obviously, this is not some shoot from the hip opinion show, this became beyond obvious during the Holtz/May stuff.

I was kinda thinking the same thing, Herbie has been about as pro-ND as an ex-buckeye ESPN analyst can get. I got no issues with the Herbster. I mean, he isnt the Hair-Domer, but still.....not bad

I do want to bring some balance to this thread. Some ppl have been giving this guy props lately; Urban Meyer did say some decent things about ND, and maybe even defended ND to a small extent......

But he is still a scumbag, and I still dont like the idea of him stopping at ND during his 'whistle-stop' tour of college football camps.

thank you and good nite now.

I don't care who it was on ESPN who did it; our exposure, in an extremely positive light, on Meyer's camp-visiting series was tremendous publicity in the best national way. On the side: we were one of the very few programs to get featured like that. Most programs/coaches would have killed for the publicity.

This sort of thing insinuates the Notre Dame name right alongside the national powers, whether we've earned it yet or not. One doesn't have to play the cult of personality in these things. All that is important in a matter such as this is the treatment that Notre Dame receives to the positive. No one [except maybe some on this board] is sitting out there saying: Oh, Jeez, Notre Dame actually accepted being on Meyer's show instead of telling him to go ----- himself.

Two weeks later 99% of the "fans" won't even remember who hosted the show, but it will be in their subconscious that Notre Dame must be back. It's called "Advertising".

I'm coming from the angle that Urban Meyer will coach again, and he was basically paid to pick the brains and get a behind-the-scene look at all the coaches (and programs) that he will be coaching against. Does Mack Brown get to watch Brian Kelly in practice and get to pick his brain? Does Lame Kiffin go to ORE and watch their practice? Urban Meyer used that trip to re-tool his coaching skills and get insight on all the competition.

Oh yea, he did an ESPN piece too...

Many coaches converse with each other and learn from each other. Doesn't Kelly often cite Frank Beamer as a guy he's learned from considerably?

Saw the piece, and man, I really don't see what the fuss is.

As has been stated, it was balanced. Palmer and Urban were loving ND, and Herbie not so much. But really, was Herbstreit out of line? If you think so, check out these #'s and tell me he was wrong: 3-9, 6-6, 6-6, 7-5. Those are our regular season records the past 4 years. You know what fans predicted on this site for those years? Almost 10-11 wins each year (myself included for 2 of those years). Now, who doesn't know what they are talking about???

Seriously, I love my Irish, but why should we expect everyone to expect ND to be great this year? Because we finally won some games in November? Because we beat a bad SC team w/out their starting QB by 4? Because we beat a coachless Miami team?

Do you guys realize how insanely rabid ND fans are, and how HUGE our fanbase is? These TV guys and writers have to deal with TONS of mail/email/voicemails from ND fans any time they predict something bad for ND...and they've been write for the better part of what, almost 2 decades? But every year we do this - we bang on 'experts' for not loving ND, and yet we never go back and say how right they were and how wrong we were.

Now, I think we're ready to explode this year, providing we get good QB play and Cierre Wood stays healthy. But until we do, we need to stay in the "show me" and "prove it to me" mind frames before we start killing the media, IMO...

You are dead on this post. As much as I am an ND fan it hurts to hear the truth. We have been a marginal football team over the past 20 or so years. Sure we have a had few good years from time to time, but than we get destroyed in our Bowl Games. The realty of Notre Dame football is exactly what Urban Meyor said. We will never be a recruiting giant like Texas, Florida, USC Alabama, Oklahoma etc but we can go out and get 3 or 4 good players every year. Is that good enough to win games in our schedule ? Yes We can win 9 or 10 or 11 games some years, but it will always come down to an opponent with an on par coach but with much better talent. Stanford has had there 4 year run, I guarantee you wont see them around for another 10 to 12 years. Honestly ND fans watch some 2010 games and than switch to any Holtz games and you will see what I Am talking about. We just are not in the same league as these power house football teams today. We cant load up with talent year after year.

Also Herbstreit is the Simon Cowl of the bunch. He keeps the conversation moving and balanced. Everything he said was right to the point except the part about first round draft picks. I don't think that means anything . AKA Oregon

I was thinking about this while reading all of the hate post about Herbie. You are 100% correct on this. He has always had nothing but good to say in the past. I think he may have gotten a little fed up with always being proven wrong by the Irish and now has a show me attitude and you can't blame him for that.

I didn't want to create a new thread for this:

Rivals.com Football Recruiting - Roundtable: Stoops among best

What school do you think has the greatest national appeal?

Mike Farrell: Nationally I'll say it's still Notre Dame. The Irish can recruit in any state in the country and the appeal of the brand is very strong even without recent national titles or consistent success. Look at ND's 2011 recruiting class and you will see players from California, Texas, Florida, North Carolina, Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, South Carolina, Connecticut, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Georgia and New York. That's national appeal.

Adam Gorney: I believe Texas and USC have the greatest regional appeal - in that any kid the Longhorns recruit from that state usually play for them and the same can be said for Southern California prospects with USC - but from a national perspective I still think it's Notre Dame Recruits from all over the country go play at Notre Dame and it's not because it's in a beautiful area or that the team has had much recent success. It still holds a lot of tradition and prestige to be a part of that program and school. Nine states are represented in Notre Dame's 2012 recruiting class and most of them are not in the Midwest. Not many kids from Pennsylvania dream of playing for Texas. Not many Texas kids dream of playing at Penn State. But lots of kids from everywhere still dream of playing at Notre Dame.

Chris Nee: Tough to argue against Notre Dame. The school has a strong religious background, outstanding academics, great tradition on the field and a national television contract. Even when the Irish have been mediocre in recent years, they have provided mass appeal to recruits for a variety of reasons.

Brian Perroni: It would have definitely been USC until the recent sanctions as well as head coach Pete Carroll leaving for the NFL. I guess I would have to say Notre Dame right now. The Irish are seen with a sort of mystique by recruits and college football fans alike and it allows them to recruit all corners of the country. Whereas Ohio State and Michigan are largely comprised of prospects from the Midwest, Notre Dame has a much more national feel to its roster.
