Right now Stanford. Not just because they are beating us on the field but because they can offer recruits the great education as well. This makes them a rival for recruits and on the field much more than Purdue, MSU or Navy.

Interesting

Thanks.

We already have a smaller recruiting pool than most other major BCS teams due to admission requirements, we really don't need Stanford taking from the top of that pool with such players as Wayne Lyons, Noor Davis, etc.

This is the list of the teams that bother me most when we lose to them:

Michigan
USC
Michigan State
Miami
Boston College
Navy
Stanford

Honorable Mention:
Alabama
Ohio State

Others:
Syracuse (as the Irish, we should never lose to the "Orange Men." Ever.)

Complete and unadulterated hatred: Southern Cal, Michigan (it's close, but given the history with USC they are the most hated)

Moderate disdain: Michigan State, Boston College, Purdue (in that order)

Want to beat, but don't quite hate (yet): Stanford

Odd rivalry with little hatred: Pittsburgh

Most respectful rivalry in football*: Navy

*Outside of the service academies.

Ohio State and Miami are probably the two other teams that boil Irish blood the most. Penn State is a notch below those two.

I hate any school outside of South Bend, so for now IUSB is in good condition but that is it. And maybe Bethel. They are lucky neither one of them have a football team.

MSU

I hate the entire state of Michigan.

:)

Some great battles during the Duffy Dougherty era. Third most wins over ND. Tied with Southern Cal for most wins over ND, 10, in the 14 years since Holtz left. Their flag planting was stupid.

Great battles with Leroy Keyes. Second most wins over ND but only 5-9 since Holtz left. In state bragging rights but really who cares about Indiana bragging rights (Ok, besides Gunner)

Navy is the longest running intersectional competition in college football but it's really hard to call it a rivalry after 43 years of whippings even with 3 Vany wins in the last 4 years. This is a unique association because of the impact of the Navy Officer Training Program at ND keeping ND solvent during WWII. I can't think of any two opponents that respects each other so highly.

Right now Stanford. Not just because they are beating us on the field but because they can offer recruits the great education as well. This makes them a rival for recruits and on the field much more than Purdue, MSU or Navy.

The Student/Athlete Gene Pool is small pickings for ND and SU to fight over. But except for the Bill Walsh and Harbaugh eras, it's been all ND.

Should be Miami.

BUT NO. Too thuggy for Notre Dame to play on a yearly basis.

Yes, it got too thuggy but despite the Catholic vs Convicts hype Miami was an ND cupcake. Da U is 7-16- versus ND and 4 of the 7 wins came against Gerry Faust. The ND/U "rivalry" really consisted of only 4 years, '87 to '91 when we split 4 games

BC ... holy war.

The Battle for the Pope's Trophy (for those that consider Jesuits, Catholic). One of the most even series in ND history with ND leading 11-9. ND was 6-2 before Holtz left. BC went 7-5 since then against the likes of Willingham and Dillingham.

The "Fredo" label NDNation pinned on BC is a bogus metaphor. Fredo was older than Michael Corleonel. ND is not only older than BC, they also started playing football before BC. The BC "Fredo" label is insulting to Fredo. BC ripped out some plumbing fixtures in a hissy fit like Carlo Rizzi would have done. This series is going to return to the 50 point blowouts of old. BC will sleep with the fishes.

Southern Cal and Michigan are the two top rivals. They will have up and down period like ND but the road to the National Championship for ND still goes through L.A. and Ann Arbor and vice versa. MSU is a distant third.

Navy is a rival, just not a peer (until the last few years arguably). Same with BC and Purdue. You can definitely have non-peer rivalries.

For some reason, I started really disliking them because I feel like they play dirty. Wake Forrest will be like that too.

Weird. I'm from Boston (OK, Rhode Island - same thing), and I hate Boston College more than any school in the country. The thing about BC, though, is that they don't have any fans. They have students and they have alums, but nobody that is not otherwise associated with BC cares about BC football at all. In Boston, they are persona non grata.

If BC was playing for the national championship, the average Boston sports fan (who could tell you who the utility infielder and long-reliever for 1975 Red Sox or the starting offensive line for the Patriots in the 1996 Super Bowl) wouldn't be able to name three players for Boston College.

So anyways, I'm with you on hating BC. But if you are hating them for their Boston-ness, you might want to reconsider. They are disliked more in Boston than anywhere else in the country, I presume.

P.S. - Also, I hope you grow out of that "hate Boston" nonsense for your own good. As a native New Englander in my fifth year living in NY, I love NY and respect NY teams (well, except the Jets, but real NY fans hate the Jets, too). Most sane New Yorkers I meet rave about how much they love Boston and New England. To hate a city seems a little misguided to me.

C'mon Ryno, the Jesuits at X aren't that bad. Father La Roccas dinners are great. BTW I graduated from X in 2010.

Its funny, I can't bring myself to hate any baseball teams. There is something to like about all of them to me. Football I definitely have a bunch of teams I hate. I used to confuse my hate for a team with a hate for a city.

The best example of that is Pittsburgh. Nobody can hate anything more than I hate the Pittsburgh Steelers. Their players and their fans are the antithesis of every quality that I find redeeming. Their players are all scum bags, and I've never met a Steeler fan who wasn't incredibly obnoxious, intellectually deficient and completely unkempt. I just associated that hate with Pittsburgh as a city (as a quick aside, I do actually hate Pennsylvania and regard it as the worst state in the union. Both its big cities are cultural vacuums and in between them is a vast nothingness, as far as I can tell).

Then, the Pirates started winning and all of a sudden I find myself pulling HARD for Pittsburgh and their "long suffering fans," who are undoubtedly mostly the same fans as the ones I hate when it comes to football. Sports are funny that way.

I love X and shout out to it they are much better than east or west coast Jesuits and I love Father La Roccas pasta dinners. He always rags on me for being an ND fan. Plus I love father Kennealy and Father B

But cannot stand B.C.

my favorite Joke Is every B.C. student has an ND rejection letter
