No Pro = Big Win!

College football, to me, is real football.

The golden years of real football prior to pro football may come full circle in a few months if professional football staff and union representatives don't soon resolve the current impasse.

This will mean a HUGE change in the number of Notre Dame fans, if not college fans alike.

Granted many of the fans I am using as an example are typical bandwagon fans, it could mean millions of extra dollars for our brand...

This would also increase the significance of a solid education versus a fly-by-night degree.

Thoughts?

College football is, was, and always will be better than the pros...fan bases are more committed and it's flat out more fun to watch...wouldn't bother me at all if they didn't have an NFL season...just move some college games to sunday, which is being negotiated in several cases.

Nothing in sports gets me as psyched as Saturday afternoons in the fall. I wouldn't want college football on Sundays, NFL or not. But I agree with -glory- that CFB fans are more committed and the atmosphere and gameplay is more exciting to watch.

It would be pretty crazy not to have the NFL but to me ND football is really all I need. As for a world without professional football, ND, Stanford, Northwestern and the likes would clean house.. you would think.

agree. Nothing is more exciting than the college football season. I watch MLB and NFL network but i only watch Niner and Dodger games.

I can watch CFB all day. There are always important games or interesting matchups even if the Irish are off that week.

I think you're underestimating how many athletes are content playing at their big state school, being king for four years, and going back to their hometown to be a phys ed teacher and/or football coach.

College football is better, but I can't say I don't like NFL football as well. Sometimes I think people wanna take this "I don't like the NFL" stance just as fans of a certain band will say they liked them before they were "mainstream". Yeah, CFB has the better atmosphere and loyalty...but the NFL has it's own advantages too. There are no "cupcakes" in the NFL in the true sense. Even the worst team in the league is comprised of the best football players in the world.

I like all football. I will definitley miss the NFL on Sundays.

sundays never really mattered to me to begin with so I imagine it wont be that much of a change.

I love cfb. The only team I follow in the NFL are the colts and I worry about Indianapolis missing out on hosting the super bowl. But college football to me is much more Fun and exciting.

i have a feeling that most NFL fans will just become SEC fans, the athletes are almost the same caliber, the stadiums are the same size, and the pay grade is just a bit lower than the pros.

I like the irish better than an NFL team but especially in 09 what always took away some of the sting of an Irish loss was a Colts win

Big Time College football > NFL

But I would much rather watch the Panthers vs. the Cardinals, than to watch Tulane vs. New Hampshire.

I absolutely love college football.

The NFL? Not so much.

I think to ppl like us on this board, and others uberfans of other college football teams, there is nothing better than College FB. But in the big picture, the NFL is bigger. Again, not to ppl like us, but outside of our bubble, I think the reality is the NFL is by far number 1. But I think CFB is 2nd, ahead of other professional sports.

My 2 favorite teams are ND and the OAK Raiders. If both teams were winning, I would get FAR MORE involved with ND. ND winning ignites an exhiliration in me that is not produced by any other sporting event or team. When the Raiders win (its been AWHILE) I'm excited but its a different feeling. Almost like a relief that thay actually did it, similar to my feeling about the Lakers.

Another way to put it, the Raiders, Lakers or any other pro sport team does not make me jump up out of my chair jumping, yelling, screaming in pure exhiliration (or disapointment). You could say I'm much more bi-polar when it comes to ND, much greater highs, and much lower lows. The NFL, or NBA teams are more even keeled with me. Pro teams just dont get the same reaction out of me, that ND does (or college football for that matter).

But I believe that this is not the case for the majority, there are vast amounts of ppl that dont really watch CFB, and only watch NFL, and have no desire to watch CFB. Like a very good friend of mine says, "there is just too many teams, the bowl system sucks, you never really know who the real champion is...." I think alot of ppl think in a similar way.

Strike/work stoppage or not, the NFL will always be number 1 (even if I dont agree with it). ND might gain some 'temporary-bandwagon fans' if the NFL doesnt getting started on time, but who wants those fans around? Being in SoCal, I saw all the bandwagon fans that USC picked up during the 2000's and it was among the most annoying things I have seen. Middle schools girls claiming to be HUGE USC fans...puhleez

Nobody does that with pro football anymore. Pro football has become a facebook event.

Only college football fans are fallen over from too much beer and/or blood loss.

Only college football fans are still paying for the couch they tossed through the drywall, (which gets plastic sheeting and duct tape until the season is over.

Only college football fans ignore their wives and risk sleeping on the couch when there team is in a world of hurt . . .

Oh yes and so it goes, the distinction is so clear.

Johnny, regarding your message at 8:33AM, you are really ****ed up, but I love you man. Well guess I gotta go, have the kids this weekend, and my fifteen-and-a-half-year-old needs to be picked up from her party. Hmm. Small semi-auto should do.
