They've officially renamed the Texas/OU rivalry game. I really doubt anyone actually stops calling it the shootout, but apparently that was a big problem to some people. I personally hate how rivalries have been impacted by realignment and sponsorships. The loss of UT/A&M sucked around here, but this game is pretty much sacrosanct.

Rivalry game name change: Texas-OU now 'AT&T Red River Showdown' - CBSSports.com

Interesting, some people do this to eliminate violence or the idea of it. After the Xavier/UC fight to years ago they renamed the game from the Crosstown Shootout to the Crosstown Classic.

I'm in no way offended (not a native Texan), but what's with the hate for Big Tex? There's a whole lot of backasswards stuff between TX and OK. but that's just a statue for the state fair.

For me that huge ass ugly statue is really an obvious example of the psychology that permeates Texas culture.....

j/k LOL. Its just a big, tacky, ugly statue. I could not care less what they name that game.

Agreed it's super tacky. I just thought maybe somehow Big Tex had become a national villain without me realizing it lol.

I lived in Oklahoma for 10 years up until 2013 and all I remember it being called was the Red River Rivalry. Don't know why they don't just go with that.

Yeah, they tried to sponsor the game and change the name in 2005 to the SBC Red River Rivalry. I get that we don't want fans preparing for a firefight, but I don't see the harm in the name "shootout", and I also think it's a better, more exciting name from a promotion standpoint.

I guess I just wish we'd leave the rivalries alone and let tradition have its moments.

Shootout is a poor term for it anyways. I feel like every year it should be called the "Red River Blowout" because it seems one teams always wins by double digits.

Bite. Your. Tongue.

Native Texan and I love Big Tex but it doesn't bother me that people from elsewhere see the statue as obnoxious. Your observation about it being representative of the obnoxious Texas self-love seems pretty accurate to me.

You California pinkos hate anything that brings attention to your favorite, nefarious color, afraid that the light of day will expose your subversive goals.

This game should be renamed The John Birch Society Bowl. Every Texan who attends over the age of two should be required to carry at the game by state law.

Rename The Shootout, what do those damn pinkos think the Alamo was, a church supper?

What next? Change the words, "The stars at night are big and bright deep in the heart of TEXAS!" to "The stars at night are of diverse size and luminosity deep in the cosmos"?

Play the game on Cinco de Mayo?

Is nothing sacred anyone more?

thiking at&t would pay them (UT and OU) to put their name on it, no?

Coming from my promotion/marketing/PR background, they probably payed that committee to come up with a marketable alternative to "shootout". They've been trying to change it since 2005, but since it isn't offending most people, their efforts have been unsuccessful. Sad as it may be, Texas loves its guns and acts stupefied when shootings happen.

This is the school that payed high 6 figures for a committee with no clear mission statement or criteria to find their next coach. Austin thought they were getting Saban until Charlie's presser. It's a prestigious public institution so nothing can be done without dotting I's and crossing T's.

What about the "red" river do you not like? The term is simply referring to the river that runs between the two states. It is called the red river because of its red appearance due to the red rock and clay of that area.
