I am not a fan of either team, but other than ND playing for the national title, is there a better event than game 7 for the Stanley Cup???

When the Pens and the Angels both played their respective game sevens I was a nervous wreck...

As much as I want ND to win a title I am not looking forward to the month long build up and the game itself... hell hath no fury.

I posted this in another forum. I figured I'd also share it here:

As some of you may know, I am not a huge hockey fan. BUT, I hope everyone is watching the Bruins.

For some unknown reason, I turned on the end of Game 3 of the opening series against Montreal. Before that, I had probably seen about 7 minutes of NHL hockey in my life. I have not missed a second of a Bruins game since. I actually took off early from work two Fridays ago to attend Game 7 of the eastern finals against Tampa Bay. I know I am the prototype bandwagon fan, the exact guy I hate when he jumps on My Team's bandwagon. But I don't care. I have enjoyed this run by the Bruins as much as a hockey neophyte could.

The early goal tonight has me feeling good, but as good as Thomas has been I'd really like to tack one on here - the sooner the better. However this game turns out, I don't know whether my elicit affair with hockey will continue, but I've really enjoyed the last few weeks and I'll never forget the time I messed with hockey.

GO B's!!!

Yeah, I left work early two weeks ago and booked it up to Boston to go to Game 7 against the Lightning. When the Bruins scored about halfway through the 3rd period to go ahead 1-0, I've never heard a building so electric, and I've been to hundreds of Patriot, Red Sox and Celtics games. Definitely a great atmosphere.

Tim Thomas. 8 goals given up in 7 games in the Finals.

Read that again.

Some other random hockey thoughts:

*I thought a play late in game 6 summarized the difference between the two teams as spotlighted by Don Cherry on HNIC.

After a scrum broke out late in the game, one of the Boston forwards (Marchand?) had one of the Sedins by the jersey and just kept feeding him jabs to his chin. The twin just stood there and took it, looking for the referee to either call a penalty or break them up....with the Canucks down big and unable to win the game.

Cherry correctly said, you simply cannot have actions like that as a leader of your team. Someone keeps punching you like that, in a situation like that, you beat the crap out of them.

*Has there ever been an elite goalie with worse reflexes than Robert Luongo? I'm not saying he's bad, and like every goalie he makes his fair share of phenomenal saves, but all he does is use his size and stand there. How many goals are scored on him where he has a clean look at the puck but barely moves?

*I was listening to a Toronto radio station this morning and they were trying sooo hard to make it seem like Vancouver should have or could have won this series.

They said Boston never wins without the Horton hit, or if Hamuis doesn't get injured. C'mon.

Besides game 5, the Bruins were the better team (sometimes much better) in every game.

For the Finals, Daniel Sedin totals 4 points and was -5, with zero points in 5 of the games.

Henrik Sedin 1 goal and 1 point total in the entire series with a -7 rating.

Even Kesler, zero goals and 1 point with a -6 rating.

The Canucks didn't show up offensively and Luongo was outclassed by Thomas at the other end. Dan friggin' Hamuis wouldn't have changed that fact.

*Also listened to my local Buffalo radio, and they were trying their best to say that the Sabres aren't that far away from having a team like the Bruins.

Except, the Sabres are the wimpiest team in the NHL.

That's something the organization has never come to grips with. I like to think about in terms of what I call the "bar effect."

If your team is tough, when the players walk into a bar you will know it. No one will ever be intimidated by Pominville, Roy, Vanek, Gerbe, Ennis, etc. If a Midget hockey team can legitimately beat up your top forwards, you're not winning the Cup anytime soon.

B's fan in Boston.....

- Van was out worked and outclassed
- Tim Thomas kept the B's in the Playoffs, easy MVP
- Sedins and Co. are soft...SOFT. Shockingly soft. It is a well known fact Cup runs are completeed with Grit and Determination.
- Defense wins Championships

Great thoughts Rocket. I think Marchand was the biggest suprise for me as an observer. That rookie showed a ton of moxie and had a huge impact on the series in terms of both points and attitude / hustle. Even though I hate all things Boston, I have to admit they clearly deserved to win - they were the tougher team and clearly had more heart. Have to also root for Thomas - an American with the determination and self-belief to go through all the ups and downs he has had in his career and to come out on top of the sport is simply awesome to see.

It's a good thing the Canucks don't have Luongo locked up on a monster contract until the end of time or anything. Is it just me or does he get that "deer in headlights" look after he gets an inkling of self doubt? Never seen an "elite" player get so easily rattled and lose all confidence in himself.

Read that again.

That sums it up right there. Watching him last night when he withstood the first couple flurries from the 'Nucks, you could just tell he was supremely focused. I just had a feeling that game was actually over in the first 5 minutes of the first period. When people talk about "the zone" they can show a picture of Tim Thomas from last night. There was no way he was going to let a puck behind him.

I also have to give an honorable mention to Recchi (sp?). 43 freakin' years old and he was flying out there all series. Great for him to go out on a big win.

Great series all around. Love seeing the Gingers lose!

Bruins also outscored Vancouver 23-8 in the series!

Here's another thought:

The Eastern Conference is definitely the power conference, or "better" conference right now, right?

It seems like there was always talk about how much stronger the West was in the 90's and into the 2000's, but hasn't it changed now?

Boston, for how well they played in the playoffs, had the look and feel of an average (maybe that's a bad word, but you get what I mean) Eastern Conference team.

Vancouver ran away with the Presidents Trophy by an absurd 10 points, and just ran rough shod over a talented San Jose team. But then the Canucks get severely outplayed by the Bruins??

Say what you want about Vancouver's injured/suspended defensemen...what does these series look like if Horton plays in all the games and Boston had Marc Savard, perhaps their best offensive player and certainly their best playmaker??

The East has now won 5 of the last 8 Stanley Cups.

Looking back at this past year's standings, I see about 4 or 5 legit Cup teams in the East, and only 3 in the West.

Your thoughts?

Rocket i think you are right, but it comes down to matchups.

In boston we have been conditioned to fear the Western Confrence and their skilled players. We simply do not face offensive players like the Kanes, Toews, Sedins, Marleuas, Keslers of the world in the Eastern Conf.

We make it up in grit tho...boy oh boy! I love watching the ginger twins take a relentless beating with no push back!!

Umm Ovechkin, Semin, Backstrom, Stamkos, Malkin and Crosby the best player in the world happens to be in the east also. I'd say top to bottom team wise the west is better, but I think the east has more skilled and dynamic players

And the Eastern teams are also just better suited to playoff hockey. The West will probably continue to win the President's Trophy most years and the East will continue to take home the Stanley Cup.

Per ESPN:

The Philadelphia Flyers have traded star center Jeff Carter to the Columbus Blue Jackets, a source told ESPN.com on Thursday.

The Flyers will receive forward Jakub Voracek, the eighth overall draft pick Friday night and a third-round draft pick from the Blue Jackets.

Carter, Philadelphia's first-round draft pick in 2003, had 66 points (36 goals, 30 assists) in 80 regular-season games last season; he also had two points in six playoff games. The 26-year-old center has 181 goals and 162 assists in 461 career games.
